Hanoi is a modern capital of nearly 9 million people.

But behind this rapid urban development lies trace of hundreds of villages that once shaped the city.

And from ancient gates to local rituals, these remaining elements tell the story of how Hanoi became what it is today.

As the city continues to grow, researchers and young communities are working to preserve these layers of heritage, not only as memories of the past,

but as a foundation for Hanoi's future identity.

As the capital Hanoi expanded, many former rural communities became part of the urban fabric,

shaping the streets, neighborhoods and public spaces that define the city today.

Around Hanoi, you see like there's a lot of village gates everywhere.

But the village is no longer there.

Sometimes you don't even recognize the village anymore in terms of physical remedy.

So we're kind of questioning about why people keep the gate.

What's the the symbol

of the gate throughout history and what the significance of the gate to the open landscape of the city.

The study on Hanoi village gates also attracts the attention of international scholars.

As an architect urbanist, Doreen Chouiri looks at these village remnants not as artifacts of the past, but a mark of the capital's unique evolution.

As cities around the world become increasingly similar, Preserving these village elements is not only about protecting the past,

but also recognizing them as a cultural advantage that guide Hanoi's future development.

All these rituals, I would say,

in the city, are important because I think there is a big loss of the rituals in Western world.

And I think in this practice of space is very important to keep architecture alive and the gates alive and

and part of the community.

But keeping heritage alive also means making it accessible.

Across Hanoi, a younger generation is finding new ways to reconnect people with the city by opening up stories

that often remain hidden behind its famous landmarks.

The Hanoi Open project aims to expand people's understanding of the city beyond the center and the old quarter.

And part of our project is to highlight Hanoi Village's heritage.

They also have lots of prestigious spaces, and lots of heritage sites for us to visit today.

From researchers documenting forgotten structures, to students sharing untold stories,

these efforts show that protecting heritage isn't only contained in preserving what remains from the past.

It means helping people understand why these places still matter today and why they deserve a place in Hanoi's future.
