1
A huge wildfire is burning through thousands of acres in California with tens of thousands of people evacuated from their homes.
2
This is the scene live in Pacific Palisades,
3
a neighborhood in the hills near Santa Monica in Los Angeles,
4
where we've seen pictures of burning cars,
5
destroyed buildings as the fire swept through.
6
Local firefighters say the conditions are as bad as they get,
7
with gusts of winds of up to more than 100 kilometres per hour
8
fanning the flames from 10 acres to almost 3,000 in a matter of hours.
9
The White House says President Biden is being briefed on the situation
10
whilst the governor of California has warned fires there no longer are seasonal but a year-round threat.
11
With more, here's our LA correspondent Emma Vardy.
12
The fire exploded at astonishing speed.
13
The combination of dry conditions and strong winds causing the fires rapid spread.
14
People evacuating began to leave their cars and escape on foot.
15
Emergency services eventually bulldozed some 200 abandoned vehicles to clear the roads.
16
The Pacific Palisades area is home to luxury properties and celebrity homes.
17
At least 30,000 residents were told to leave.
18
my heart is in my throat but we're okay as long as the firefighters said there's a
19
ambulance to take us out
20
but this is like right at my doorstep we've been watching these huge plumes of smoke rising
21
and the flames flickering over the mountains behind us now people in california are used to wildfires
22
and strong winds at this time of year
23
but this one is more unusual because of how quickly it spread
24
and the fact it's so close to a densely populated area
25
Thousands of buildings were in danger of being engulfed by flames as emergency services tried to keep people safe.
26
It's not yet clear how widespread the damage is to properties,
27
but some homes have been destroyed and several other fires have also been burning.
28
While the strong winds continue,
29
there's warnings across California that more wildfires may start.

31
And this here is live film footage we're receiving right now here at BBC News from Alta Dina,
32
which is in Los Angeles.
33
You can see there a building on fire.
34
Firefighters are just outside of this shot where they're trying to get control.
35
It gives you a sense of the scale of this and the ferocity of the flames
36
as firefighters desperately try to bring an end to these wildfires
37
which are just raging through the whole of Los Angeles at the moment.
38
I talked to David Latt.
39
He was forced to evacuate his home.
40
He lives in Pacific Palisades.
41
He told us what happened to him.
42
This morning early, my wife and I were very unaware of what was happening,
43
and a neighbor called and said, get out.
44
This was about 10 a.m.,
45
and I went outside and saw what he was reacting to,
46
which was a huge plume of black smoke about four blocks away from our house.
47
I took out a ladder,
48
and I went up on the roof because I saw that there was fallen leaves and other debris,
49
and I wanted to make sure that the fire,
50
if it spread in our direction,
51
didn't have combustibles on the roof.
52
So I quickly swept that off.
53
And then over the next 30 to 40 minutes,
54
I watched as the fire got larger and moved in our direction.
55
And as your reporter indicated.
56
The problem here is extreme wind coupled with no rain for half a year.
57
So the conditions are primed for a very difficult situation.
58
We were ordered to evacuate and the communication was extremely good.
59
We received texts, messages saying you must evacuate immediately.
60
And I have to say our mayor,
61
Karen Bass, had prepared for the situation by assembling material and personnel.
62
So they were in the area.
63
So the response was very quick.
64
And even as I was watching in some video that I shot,
65
you can see first observational helicopters analyzing the area from the air,
66
or the situation from the air.
67
And then you saw, I think they're called super scoopers,
68
fixed wing airplanes that go close to the surface of the ocean,
69
pick up water, and then drop it,
70
along with fire retardants to slow down the fire.
71
So the attack by the city officials was very aggressive.
72
The problem was and continues to be the wind.
73
And again, as your reporter mentioned,
74
the concern now is what's going to happen tonight where the expectation is not hurricane force,
75
but extremely high winds.
76
And even though the personnel have been very aggressive
77
putting out the fires they can find with the wind it's
78
very hard to know where the fires are going to be as they're spread embers are picked up
79
and they can go across the street or a mile away
80
so all of la is on alert you hear sirens um excuse me
81
and you can you can tell there's a lot of smoke in the air
82
and
83
but we're happily safe at a friend's house in the middle
84
of la an area called larchmont The problem in Pacific Palisades is
85
that it's a relatively isolated area with just one road in and out.
86
So the traffic jam, it took us two hours to get out of the area.
87
And while you're speaking there,
88
David, we were looking at the videos that you sent us that you shot before you left your home.
89
Just talk us through what goes through your mind when you know you've got to evacuate your home.
90
You don't know what you will return to.
91
I mean, what do you grab?
92
And what's the pressure, the time pressure, I assume?
93
You really had to act quickly.
94
Yeah, you really, well, first of all,
95
I'm a native Los Angelian.
96
This, like earthquakes, is just a natural fact of living in the area.
97
We're taught, you're taught over and over again to have what they call a grab and go box,
98
which means with your passport,
99
tax records as you're preparing your tax returns,
100
especially prized videos or still photographs and albums.
101
So we already had part of that pact.
102
We're also ready to go out of town.
103
So we actually had suitcases packed with clothing,
104
so we just knew to grab those.
105
But you're right, the hard thing is we have paintings,
106
some done by my wife's father,
107
who's no longer with us.
108
They're wonderful, but they're large,
109
some of them, and by other artists,
110
which we've collected over the years,
111
and we knew we had to walk away from them.
112
And that's hard.
113
I mean, it's just hard to do.
114
So that there was David Latt,
115
who I spoke to earlier,
116
who lives in Pacific Palisades.
117
And these pictures we're receiving now are the area,
118
Pacific Palisades, which is the area where he lives,
119
where everyone has been ordered to evacuate their homes.
120
Because, of course, it's extremely dangerous,
121
as you can see here.
122
30,000 people are under evacuation orders at the moment across the state of Los Angeles,
123
which is declared a state of emergency.
124
As the wildfires spread rapidly,
125
the winds that are sort of extremely high and the dry lands,
126
as we were hearing from our correspondent Emma Vardy earlier,
127
making it very, very difficult to bring this under control.
128
Millions of people in California across the state are under a red flag warning,
129
meaning there is an extreme fire danger.
