1
Hi everybody, welcome to a new episode of Easy English.
2
So carrying on from our series of conversations with native speakers,
3
I wanted to bring you something special, something very quintessentially British.
4
The pub.
5
This time I'm going to be going inside pubs and making conversations with the bartenders.
6
Not only are you going to get advice,
7
but you're going to learn some of the phrases and some conversational pieces to get you going,
8
but also some advice on what you should
9
and shouldn't be doing in a British pub and some secret tips that you maybe don't know.
10
So here we go, this is Conversations in a British Pub.
11
Hi, how's it going?
12
Yeah, all good mate, how are you?
13
Hiya, you alright?
14
How's it going?
15
Yeah, not bad, yourself?
16
Yeah, good, thirsty.
17
Oh, what would you like?
18
We've got some good beers here, ciders.
19
Ah, yeah, okay.
20
We've got quite a few different beers.
21
Are you kind of after more lager stuff,
22
or we've got some local stuff over here as well?
23
We've got obviously Guinness style on tap.
24
We've got lagers, we've got pale ales.
25
Over here we've got Cruz, Red Stripe and Moretti.
26
Okay, and these are all lagers?
27
Yeah, these ones are all lagers and then if you're after a stout we've got Guinness here.
28
Okay.
29
Which is a bit more heavier.
30
Like percentage wise?
31
Not percentage wise, just like on like taste.
32
What is a cider?
33
So, a cider is basically made of apples,
34
instead of like wheat, barley and stuff like beers.
35
Okay.
36
If you want to try a bit you're more than welcome, it's quite sweet.
37
Is it okay to try a bit?
38
Yeah, of course.
39
Can I try.. which one would you recommend?
40
So this one's very fruity,
41
very sweet, and this one's more like a traditional cider.
42
So if you haven't tried cider, try this one.
43
If you'd like, you can have a tester of anything you want.
44
Oh, is that okay?
45
So I'd probably recommend, if you want to try something local,
46
probably recommend the Sonar or the ABS Super Pale.
47
Okay.
48
Like usually somewhere will have like,
49
you know, a local thing on top that you can just drive through.
50
Oh yeah, I've heard of like Pale Ale's.
51
Yeah, do you want a little tester of those?
52
Yeah, why not?
53
Yeah, sure.
54
So what's the difference between a beer and a lager and an ale?
55
So your lager are sort of like your normal beers that you get.
56
They're not too complex, they're quite hoppy for the most part.
57
And then your ales, you get a little bit more complex with like more fruit in them for example.
58
A lot of the ones on casks are like your sort of old man beers,
59
sort of the old sort of English pub sort of beers that you get.
60
Quite easy drinking a lot of the time and a quiet taste I'd say.
61
Is it this warm, flat?
62
Warm sort of flat feeling.
63
Very different to the sensation of drinking a lager for example.
64
And that's quite common in the UK.
65
Very common in the UK.
66
Places like America and stuff,
67
if they came here and they saw this and they got given a warm beer,
68
they'd be like what is this they'd be
69
so confused is it possible to taste yeah i'll take some yeah would
70
that be okay yeah is
71
that normal in a pub to be able to taste yeah no literally yeah people come in all the time
72
and be like oh i've never tried that
73
so we always try to offer people if they want to try Try something new.
74

92
Now back to our episode.
93
And is it normal to get like these little tasters?
94
It is very normal, yeah.
95
Okay.
96
We always ask because it makes it easier for us anyway.
97
Purely on the...
98
If you're enjoying what you're drinking then it's way easier next time.
99
And what sizes do beers come in?
100
We either have a pint or a half pint.
101
Ah, okay.
102
That's the two sizes you can get.
103
Okay.
104
And is it possible to try everything here?
105
Yeah, you can try as many as you like.
106
Is it even possible to try wines and stuff?
107
Yeah, you can try a little bit of wine.
108
Really?
109
You just can't try any of the spirits just
110
because they're really strong drunk so you can't try any of those otherwise you might get drunk.
111
What are like normal opening and closing times for a pub?
112
So a lot of pubs really will open around midday maybe 11 for the most part,
113
maybe close around midnight.
114
Whereas the weekend you'll go on to a bit later.
115
We have a very late license and we go until 3 o'clock on the weekend
116
so we'll be open 12 midday till 3 in the morning.
117
Okay, and you, there's this thing that happens
118
when you go to a pub where people will ring bells at the end of the day, right?
119
What does that super- So that's the last order bell.
120
Not every pub has them.
121
Most people normally just turn the music down and shout,
122
but we have a big bell just up here.
123
Hear a load and then just scream last orders until everyone notices.
124
And what does that mean?
125
That's last- means that that is the call to come get your last drinks.
126
It's about 15, normally about half an hour to 15 minutes before we close.
127
And then when we close,
128
when the bar's closed, you ring it again and shout time at the bar so everyone knows no more drinks.
129
And I see you have like crisps behind you.
130
I do, so we've got crisps and nuts.
131
It's very standard, just to have crisps and nuts as a snack.
132
That's normal in a pub?
133
Yeah, that's normal.
134
What about food, if I'm hungry as well?
135
Do you need food?
136
Food?
137
Yeah, we've got a food menu just over here on the table.
138
At the moment here we So we do burgers,
139
chicken wings and tenders, and then we've got quite a bit of fry menu over here as well.
140
So like a normal dish is like burgers and chips?
141
Yeah, a normal dish in pubs is like burgers,
142
fish and chips is probably quite common as well.
143
On Sundays, some pubs might do a roast dinner,
144
which is very common in the UK.
145
Do you only serve alcoholic drinks here?
146
No, no, no. We've got non-alcoholic stuff as well.
147
So you do non-alcoholic fairs.
148
um so you've got lucky saint
149
which uh once again also is quite low too um it's
150
brewed by actually no it's not i lie it's just english
151
it's not brewed by these these guys do their own good stuff though nice
152
and yeah you've got cider guinness probably the best one uh i would say
153
and then heineken erdinger which is more i think less soft drink
154
and loads of soft drinks as well do you have anything else
155
that like maybe someone who would never been to a pub before wouldn't know they could do
156
or should do or any etiquette.
157
Most pubs you're allowed to bring children until a certain time so here it's 8 o'clock
158
after 8 o'clock we can't have any children.
159
And that's normal?
160
Yeah and it's normal and also anyone under 18 has to be with an adult.
161
Moving from Australia to here the biggest difference is that you can bring pets in here.
162
Oh yeah, bring my dog in?
163
Yeah you can bring a dog in.
164
My tortoise?
165
Yeah I mean so I would never say the tortoise bring in here but yeah.
166
Do you pay at the end of your drinking session?
167
No, no, no, there's nothing that is different.
168
Especially in America, you do tabs all the time.
169
Ah, okay, yeah.
170
Yeah, right, tab.
171
In England, if you want to do a tab, you can ask us.
172
What is a tab?
173
A tab is where you put a car behind the bar and then you,
174
you know, just get us to put drinks on your table.
175
Yeah.
176
Whereas, well, but in general,
177
unless you're in a massive group,
178
this isn't really the done thing to do,
179
especially if you're in individual drinks.
180
A lot of pubs will just prefer you to pay as you go.
181
The main thing is just be respectful and chat to your bartenders,
182
because they're always up for a chat.
183
That's the thing.
184
It gets very boring standing behind a bar doing the same thing constantly.
185
So people are always up for a chat and if you've got any questions,
186
it's always good to ask.
187
People, for the most part,
188
will be very, very receptive to that.
189
And we'd love to just talk to people.
190
When you come into a pub,
191
if you just ask for a beer it will always be a pint
192
so if you want a half pint ask for a half pint otherwise you'll always get a pint.
193
Yeah there's a big commitment there.
194
And also when you come up
195
and order it's different than a lot of other countries you pay when you order so you come up,
196
order your drinks, you get your drinks,
197
pay straight away and then take your drinks with you to the table.
198
I would say if you're ordering Guinness,
199
which is a stout, always order it first.
200
Why is that?
201
Because you have to wait for it to settle and then we can do everything else while that is settling.
202
And also, if we put it there and it isn't full up yet,
203
don't take it off the bar.
204
It's not done yet.
205
I see.
206
If that makes sense.
207
That happens a lot.
208
Also, don't grab your drink from who's serving you from their hand.
209
Because everyone said just let us put it down.
210
You'll put it down when it's ready.
211
Oh and we have three different sizes of wine in England.
212
Which I know like places like Spain and Italy,
213
it's a glass of wine and you get a glass of wine.
214
Here we have like three different measurements.
215
So you have 125, 175, 250.
216
So this is an Irish pub right?
217
What would be the difference between a normal,
218
typical pub and an Irish pub?
219
A lot of the time it is just the decoration
220
and sort of the vibe of the pub really
221
but here especially we try and put a very big focus on the Irishness.
222
We get a lot of Irish artists in,
223
we always serve Irish beer, such as Guinness.
224
We really, really, really try and put a big emphasis on Irish sports like rugby and football.
225
We do a big street party for Paddy's Day,
226
we have a big thing on Paddy's Day itself.
227
and yeah a lot of English pubs you'll see them especially
228
a different decor to here you get sort of you can feel sort of the age of the pub
229
when you walk in here I feel with the exposed woods and the sofas and the seating and stalls.
230
And is it okay just to like come in and not order alcohol or not order anything?
231
It might be okay in a lot of places depending on who's working
232
but it's normally polite to order something if you're coming in and sitting.
233
Okay, so I could come in with my laptop and work and maybe order like a drink or something?
234
Yeah, that would be fine.
235
Yeah.
236
Unless the pub owner is grumpy or the person working is angry.
237
Amazing.
238
Wow, thank you so much for your help.
239
Yeah, thank you.
240
See you later.
241
See you later, have a lovely day.
242
Thank you so much for your help.
243
That's what I'm doing, man.
244
Yeah.
245
Okay, see you later.
246
See you in a bit.
247
Have a good day.
248
Thank you for your help.
249
No worries.
250
Nice to meet you.
251
Thank you so much for your insight, it was really useful.
252
That's right mate.

  • "How's it going?"
  • "What would you like?"
  • "Can I try...?"
  • "Is it okay to try a bit?"
