1
Were you telling this story?
2
You know, you just said the story is for everybody, but was the story also for you, Mara, Brock, Akil?
3
I think we're responsible for our own healing.
4
And I have used the power of the pen to not only tell stories and entertain, but also to heal myself.
5
I've put myself in a lot of my characters, a part of my Um...
6
ethos is I tell the truth through fiction.
7
So there's going to be some level of real truth that I am really, I'm drawing from.
8
And I'm grateful that I have the ability to learn how to craft it in a way
9
that really becomes this micro story of mine,
10
becomes a macro of what's impacting a lot of us and I can find it through the workshopping of the story.
11
about who this book is for, why this book now And there's just a lot of shame, I think, because even with the onset of the camera and the social media,
12
we're hiding parts of ourselves.
13
- Absolutely.
14
- We're just hiding so much of ourselves.
15
And actually, I think it's the thing that frees us the most.
16
And so the writing the book was an opportunity for me to free myself.
17
- Well, this is, you know, what is so interesting for me having been a victim of sexual abuse from a very young age, nine years old, many of you...
18
Nine for me too.
19
Yeah.
20
nine years old, and being raped at nine,
21
and then continuously sexually molested over the years by various boyfriends of my mother's and my cousins, these older men.
22
This is what I think most people don't realize is that When you see these young girls you know,
23
being very promiscuous at a young age, It is-- Usually because...
24
the sexual stimulation, the sexual whatever has been turned on in such a way that they're now alert to what that means.
25
So you have written about it in the book through Dion Daphne.
26
Do you mind sharing what actually happened to you?
27
I would share this, that it was It was a time in my life, it was from 9 to 12, that I was that I was molested.
28
And what was interesting to me at that time, and this is where the book comes into play,
29
is how well I managed. And...
30
I managed by one of the greatest gifts I've ever had was that's where my relationship with God truly began.
31
- Mm -hmm.
32
- That my relationship is rooted in that.
33
And sometimes I even think about If that had never happened, where would my relationship with God be?" thus and such.
34
Well.
35
It happened to me.
36
and God loves me, so I'm supposed to do something with it.
37
And now all these years later, I believe this is my something to do with it.
38
The second thing that I realized is how much you can repurposed energy.
39
I didn't have that language at that time.
40
Yes.
41
But I channeled at that point, my escape.
42
of My mother's choice is like, I was in the care of this person because of her.
43
And I know she did it out of love, She was clueless too. But...
44
At that time, I knew that I had to escape.
45
And the best way I knew how to escape is through what my family believes in is education.
46
I became this amazing student, so I also became that much more undetected.
47
Yeah, yeah.
48
I came further and further.
49
No one could kind of see.
50
And then I put the good girl image up.
51
Yeah.
52
I hid around the corners.
53
people can project onto you.
54
And so you can allow that story to be true.
55
If they think good of you, and however you feel about yourself, in those quiet moments.
56
you can then adopt that ideas of yourself to get you through.
57
So I think
58
My relationship with God
59
my ability to understand how to alchemize that pain and energy and focus it in my grades and keep
60
graduation and getting to the best school as my escape plan.
61
As so many of us have done.
62
Yes.
63
But here's the interesting thing about the character, Dion, in the book when she has to go to the clinic, the AIDS clinic, and take the test,
64
as you were saying, you have to, I didn't know if this was real or not, but that she had to list all of the people she'd ever slept with in her life,
65
beginning with the very first person.
66
Which I thought was interesting because I thought it would be like the person you most recently slept with.
67
Yeah, you do.
68
You start from, it's funny, yes, and that's what she does.
69
She starts from, You know, the last one she had is the guy, the one night stand she just had.
70
Yeah.
71
Well, she didn't know it was going to be a one night stand, but...
72
And then her boyfriend.
73
Yeah.
74
And then you get to see all the other ones up there.
75
And then at the top of the list...
76
And the top of the list is the stepfather.
77
...was her stepfather.
78
Yeah.
79
Was her stepfather.
80
And In the book, on page 201, the character Dion says, I knew how to compartmentalize our nights from our days,
81
the same way I learned to separate myself from my -Body.
82
-Ooh.
83
Yeah.
84
- I didn't know I was doing that all those years.
85
You know, when you're performing, I don't know if I was performing, how disconnected I have been from my own body.
86
I was so, I'm so compartmentalized I just recently in my adult life let my food touch.
87
I didn't realize how psychologically separate I am.
88
You mean on your plate?
89
Yeah, on my plate.
90
My food never touched.
91
Never.
92
Oh, you're one of those people.
93
I am.
94
Okay.
95
And I didn't even know why I was doing that.
96
These examinations of this thing, I'm like, "Oh my God, Mar, are you going to let your food touch?" Um, And so after you were sexually molested,
97
did you do this too?
98
You learned to compartmentalize.
99
Yes, you learned how to be the different parts of yourself, fragmented, puzzle yourself out, to hide this thing, to hide this...
100
um, You know, I was told that if I told anyone I gave this to Dionne, if I told anyone that I would be taken away, you know, from my...
101
from my mother and you know it's just like You know...
102
You're a child.
103
You don't know.
104
You don't know what's true or not.
105
And so, But the compartmentalization of self is In one way,
106
the victory of me, because just like I talked about the grades, I understood how to keep my focus around my escape plan, if that makes sense.
107
You can hold on to the great...
108
the straight A student.
109
Meanwhile, prepare yourself sometimes for the night.
110
you mentally, physically, Um...
111
And it's funny about the, about when I say the, the food on my plate.
112
I started to notice my behavior.
113
The other thing that's really interesting about compartmentalization...
114
You started to notice what in your behavior?
115
Just how I keep things separate.
116
Sometimes even friends.
117
Sometimes...
118
Even like how much I try to control every environment so I can survive it.
119
- So you're doing that because you couldn't control-- - You can't control, yes.
120
- Being molested by somebody who is so much older than you.
121
- You were looking for control in so many different ways.
122
- How much older was the person than you?
123
Oh, they were a full -grown man.
124
Yeah, a full -grown man.
125
I know when you think...
126
I know...
127
Not a teenager, not a 20 -something.
128
When I look back at my nine -year -old self, can you see your nine -year -old self?
129
and your little skinny brown legs and your knobby knees.
130
And your teeth that don't-- - Yes.
131
It's going every different direction.
132
They're not even fully in.
133
You just think, "What a pervert.
134
How could they even see?" Yes, you know, even, you know, when my own children became of that age,
135
you know, I took the time to cry those moments out.
136
because I thought the same thing.
137
How could anybody touch a child at that age.
138
And of course, we know it happens...
139
All the time.
140
All the time and earlier.
141
- Much earlier.
142
- Much earlier.
143
- So...
144
- And for longer periods of time.
145
But the one other thing I'd like to say about compartmentalization is memory.
146
It's funny, in my work now, we're working-- I don't even like to call it flashbacks.
147
trying to articulate memory.
148
And memory can also be very dangerous.
149
one of the things that is trying to get your memory back.
150
So in the book, you'll see that Dion is trying to get her memory back, because a lot of times when you compartmentalize, you got to keep things sorted.
