1
Joining me now on the phone is the mayor of San Diego, Mayor Todd Gloria.
2
Mayor Gloria, thank you so much for your time.
3
I wish we were talking under better circumstances.
4
But I saw the press conference with you,
5
also the chief of police,
6
Scott Wall, and the FBI there.
7
But we also heard from Imam Hassan.
8
And I know you've been talking to your constituents there in the community.
9
Have you had communications with the imam there?
10
And what are you hearing on the ground in San Diego right now?
11
Yeah, thank you, Alex.
12
Yeah, Imam Taha and I have a long relationship.
13
He's an iconic leader here in San Diego,
14
and he was on the property at the time of the shooting.
15
You know, his concern is obviously for his congregation,
16
for the children at the school that's on site with the mosque,
17
and for the employees that died.
18
but there's a number of our Muslim San Diegans who are here
19
and their comments are unanimous in their concern
20
that other attacks like this can happen and their general fear for their well-being and safety,
21
not just here in San Diego,
22
but all across our country.
23
Yeah.
24
Well, and we've heard from police departments all across the country.
25
New York City's police department said that they were going to be increasing police presence at places of worship, including mosque.
26
I'm curious, have you had communications with Chief Scott Wall about how this might change,
27
at least in the coming days and weeks,
28
how San Diego patrols its neighborhoods.
29
You know, Alex, unfortunately, as a mayor in the United States,
30
it's not my first time having to deal with these kinds of situations.
31
So, yes, we immediately have increased patrols around religious sites,
32
both our Muslim, Jewish, and other faith communities across the city.
33
I imagine we'll maintain that posture for some time.
34
And I know that's true across our county,
35
where our sheriff has made similar direction.
36
We want people to feel safe.
37
I want your viewers and listeners to know that San Diego is one of the safest big cities in the United States.
38
And that's because we work on issues proactively.
39
We do our best to prevent them.
40
We build relationships like the one I have with Imam Taha.
41
And ordinarily that wins the day.
42
But obviously that's not the case today.
43
What happened is horrifically tragic and reminded all of us that hate has no place in this society.
44
Yeah.
45
One of the other things that we learned this afternoon is of the three men that were killed there at the mosque.
46
One was a security guard.
47
Wall said that his actions played a pivotal role in making sure that this wasn't significantly worse.
48
Obviously, you've been plugged in that community for, at this point, decades.
49
I'm curious, did you have a personal relationship with any of the deceased?
50
Is there anything that you can share on that front?
51
No, I did not know either any of the three deceased,
52
but I can confirm what the chief said.
53
I think obviously this is still an extremely active situation,
54
but I believe that once the investigation is complete,
55
that that security guard will be credited with a tremendous saving of many,
56
many lives, including many children,
57
an absolute hero who sadly lost his life,
58
but for whom we're all grateful.
59
The other thing we heard is that as of now,
60
this is going to be investigated as a hate crime until it's not.
61
Is it pointing in that direction to you?
62
So the FBI and San Diego Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are still doing their work.
63
I think the chief is right.
64
I mean, San Diego is the eighth largest city in the country,
65
and yet this attack happened at a local mosque.
66
I think common sense would suggest that there's something here,
67
but I'm going to make sure that we do our investigation,
68
that we don't send up unnecessary alarm.
69
But I can tell you from the members of our community who are here on site,
70
they're already very concerned.
71
They feel targeted as a community,
72
and days like today gives them reason to feel that way.
73
Yeah, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.
74
Hey, I appreciate your time.
75
Thank you, Alex.
76
We miss you out here in San Diego.
77
Yeah, I miss being there.
