2
Are people less happy or more happy the older they get?
3
If you answered more happy,
4
then you were right based on a study published two years ago.
5
It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50.
6
In fact, it found that by the age of 85,
7
people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
8
The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States in 2008.
9
At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85.
10
Arthur Stone, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York,
11
led the study.
12
His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25.
13
Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their 50s.
14
This was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70s.
15
But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their 70s and 80s.
16
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older.
17
However, women at all ages reported more sadness,
18
stress, and worry than men did.
19
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children,
20
being unemployed, or being single.
21
But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
22
So why would happiness increase with age?
23
One theory is that as people get older,
24
they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions.
25
They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
26
The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
27
This is not the only thing that apparently improves with age.
28
In a study published this year,
29
people in their 80s reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep.
30
Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults.
31
The study, led by Michael Grandner at the University of Pennsylvania,
32
appeared in the journal Sleep.
33
The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems.
34
The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women.
35
But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

  • Listen Carefully: Pay close attention to the speaker's pronunciation and stress. This will help you improve your English pronunciation significantly.
  • Focus on Clarity: When you shadow speak, prioritize clarity over speed. This will help you articulate words correctly, especially during IELTS speaking practice.
  • Repeat Multiple Times: Don’t hesitate to go over the same segment several times. Repetition is key in mastering new vocabulary and emotional patterns in speech.
  • Record Yourself: Use a recording device to capture your shadowing sessions. Listening back will allow you to identify areas for improvement in your diction and emotional expression.
  • Use Pause Function: If the video is too fast, use the pause function to practice a phrase before moving on. Gradually increase the pace as you gain confidence.

By incorporating these practices into your learning sessions, you will not only improve your English skills but also develop a deeper understanding of the nuances of language as it relates to emotions, such as happiness throughout different life stages.
