We're joined by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
2
General Blanche, good to have you with us today.
3
Thank you for joining me.
4
Of course.
5
So tell me a little bit about how he was arrested,
6
al-Sayedi, and how he, was he brought to this country?
7
Was he already in the United States?
8
What can you share on that, Attorney General?
9
This was a remarkable effort by our FBI,
10
Director Patel leadership, and our international partners.
11
And we were able to intercept
12
and get in the middle of this man's attempts to wreak havoc and terrorize not only the United States, Canada, Europe.
13
And so we were able to introduce an undercover working with our law enforcement partners.
14
So I think what our U.S attorney just said is dead on,
15
that President Trump's leadership around the world allows us to have the credibility
16
and the partnerships to allow us to work with folks overseas.
17
And that's what happened here.
18
So he was brought here and appeared in court earlier today.
19
And it is a, on the one hand,
20
should be very alarming to the people in this country
21
that there are men around the world trying to exact this sort of terror.
22
On the other hand, it shows the success of good law enforcement work
23
and good police work and working hard to protect our borders,
24
which is what we do every single day.
25
And so this investigation is ongoing.
26
It's just a complaint.
27
I expect the next steps will be an indictment.
28
And obviously, we're still investigating and gonna make sure that anybody
29
that was involved with him will be brought to justice as well.
30
Was he picked up in Iraq?
31
And when was he brought to the United States?
32
He was recently brought to the United States.
33
I want to be careful talking about the operation,
34
so I don't put anybody in danger.
35
But it's enough to say that this was an effort that included not only the FBI,
36
but our law enforcement partners overseas as well.
37
Yeah, great work on their part.
38
Can you tell us how imminent this synagogue attack in New York City was?
39
And we understand that there were many plans that he was overseeing.
40
But how imminent was this attack?
41
Well, if you look at what the complaint alleges,
42
and again, it was with an undercover.
43
And so we were able to introduce an undercover.
44
But there was an expectation that this would happen very,
45
very soon and that it would happen,
46
you know, not in years to come, but now.
47
And so
48
if you accept the complaint talking about how his goal was
49
to try to stop the United States from the work that we're doing in Iran,
50
then obviously he wanted it done as soon as possible.
51
So this was a real serious terrorist threat to this country.
52
And I want to thank the FBI.
53
And we should all thank the FBI
54
and the prosecutors in New York for really putting together a good case and stopping this.
55
Yeah, we're showing some images of the arrest
56
and the movement by the FBI of this suspect that we just got in, Attorney General.
57
It also says in the complaint at least one other expected to be brought to and arrested by the SDNY.
58
What can you tell us about that?
59
Well, as the complaint lays out there,
60
he was not acting alone.
61
We don't believe that.
62
And it wasn't just the undercover.
63
And so co-conspirators were obviously actively investigating and going to try to bring everybody to justice.
64
And I don't want to get ahead of the men
65
and women of the FBI doing their work and tip our hand there.
66
But I assure you that in the coming days and weeks,
67
to the extent that there's other folks that we catch involved,
68
you will hear from us.
69
Yeah.
70
I mean, obviously, this is a huge concern because Iran feels pushed back on their heels.
71
There have been, you know,
72
these tremendous attacks that have decimated their conventional military.
73
And we know just in their own history
74
and their DNA is to resort to terrorism and to use these proxies to do exactly that,
75
to attack Americans.
76
So what would you say to the American public?
77
Should they change their behavior in any way?
78
As you look at the,
79
you know better than the rest of us,
80
the dimension of this threat.
81
Look, this is exactly why President Trump is doing what he's doing,
82
why he's protecting the American people.
83
He has said that there is no scenario under which he will allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.
84
Why is that?
85
Well, at least in large part,
86
It's what we saw today,
87
because we have a country that for decades and decades has wanted nothing more than to destroy the United States of America.
88
And so President Trump is saying, stop it.
89
And not surprising, there's resistance to that.
90
And this was one example of that today.
91
But the resolve of our military,
92
the resolve of President Trump and this administration is done exactly to stop this type of conduct.
93
And so this is a stark reminder of why we're doing what we're doing.
94
Yeah.
95
Well, it looks like a great operation,
96
and we hope that it's fruitful in terms of bringing in anyone else who's linked to it,
97
because clearly this is a very obvious and prevalent threat that we face here as Americans.
98
I want to ask you about the Raul Castro indictment and where that stands.
99
We know that John Ratcliffe,
100
the head of the CIA,
101
was in Cuba on the ground with some of of Castro's folks,
102
let's say, the other day.
103
Where is this going, Attorney General?
104
Well, there's absolutely no public information around any indictment that's been leaked or discussed on various news outlets.
105
And I assure you and I assure the American people that
106
if and when there's a time to talk about that, we will.
107
Obviously, what we are doing in Florida,
108
what we're doing here with respect to Cuba is something that's been happening for a long time,
109
and we're not slowing down.
110
And you've heard our Secretary of State and President Trump talk about what we're doing in Cuba.
111
But as far as any rumors around that indictment,
112
I can't comment on that.
113
All right.
114
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche,
115
thank you very much, sir.
116
Great to have you with us today.
117
Thank you.
118
Thank you.
