1
My name is Danish, and my full-time job is to count people's ums and uhs and like.
2
It all started at my first day of school,
3
after my family moved from Pakistan to Tanzania.
4
I was busy sketching my dream cars in my notebook,
5
and all of a sudden I hear a voice in my direction, the teacher.
6
Danish, can you please rise up and introduce yourself?
7
She had put me on the spot.
8
I was in this foreign land,
9
30 pairs of eyes staring at me.
10
How would you feel when a teacher puts you on the spot in this kind of situation?
11
My mind went blank.
12
My heart started racing.
13
I kept quiet.
14
I started hearing giggles in the classroom.
15
And then tears ran down my cheek.
16
That was the first time I felt the fear of speaking in front of others.
17
The first time I felt the fear of public speaking.
18
Fast forward a few years,
19
I was at college here in America.
20
That fear still stuck with me.
21
It was as though it was part of my soul.
22
Now, when I was little,
23
I had many other fears.
24
I was afraid of the dark,
25
the monsters under my bed,
26
the cockroaches, and I don't mean the tiny cockroaches here,
27
but the big flying cockroaches I had back home in Pakistan and Tanzania.
28
But I outgrew these fears.
29
I overcame them as I grew older.
30
But public speaking?
31
No way.
32
I was still afraid of it.
33
But I decided enough was enough.
34
I decided to do something about about it,
35
to take that step and find a solution.
36
And so I went to the one place on the Internet where we all look for problems to our solution,
37
to our problems, Google.
38
I searched on Google how to overcome the fear of public speaking.
39
The first link told me about the great things I could be if I overcame this fear.
40
Sound like a leader.
41
Get a great job.
42
Share your ideas.
43
Give a TED talk.
44
Change the world.
45
The second link showed me all the different ways I could overcome this fear.
46
Hire a speech coach.
47
Talk in front of the mirror.
48
do online courses, attend public speaking clubs like Toastmasters.
49
That's when I realized that I had it wrong all this time.
50
I thought you were either born a public speaker or you're not.
51
I was wrong.
52
I realized that public speaking is actually a teachable skill.
53
That means that if any one of you here wants to speak powerfully,
54
like any of your famous public speakers, yes, you can.
55
We all can.
56
Now, some of these solutions work for me, others not so much.
57
Like hiring a speech coach,
58
that was outside of my student budget.
59
But online courses, that's where I learned how to vary my tone up and down.
60
How to talk really, really fast so that I could get someone's excited.
61
Or to slow right down to get someone's attention.
62
And I practiced.
63
I practiced in front of the mirror.
64
At least that's where I had one friend who thought I was good.
65
As for the public speaking club, Toastmasters, that was fantastic.
66
I got to go in front of others and I got feedback on what I did good and what I did bad.
67
So I did all these things and I realized that first I was trapped in this cold,
68
dark hole where the fear of public speaking haunted at me.
69
It pulled me down.
70
And over here was this promise of sunshine,
71
of green pastures, no anxiety.
72
But the path from here to here was all over the place.
73
I had to do all these things.
74
And I thought to myself,
75
there had to be one simpler way.
76
There had to be one way that I could go from here and leap to here.
77
So, I went back to Google,
78
the source of all wisdom,
79
did some research, and I started learning and reading a lot about artificial intelligence,
80
about these personal assistants we have in our pocket,
81
like Siri, Alexa, who understand what we're saying.
82
Hey, Siri, what's the next meeting I have?
83
Okay, here's your meeting.
84
They understand what we say.
85
What if they could also understand how you're saying something and analyze your voice?
86
What if they could be your speech coaches?
87
What if every single person in the world,
88
anywhere, had their own personal on-demand speech coach?
89
Can you imagine a world where anyone has this help to help them overcome this fear of public speaking,
90
to help them speak powerfully,
91
to help them share their ideas.
92
That's the idea that got us started.
93
That's the idea that helped us create ORI,
94
OroAI, a mobile app that counts your ums and uhs,
95
a mobile app that gives you personalized lessons,
96
a place to practice them quietly in privacy,
97
and an app that gives you instant feedback using artificial intelligence.
98
Now, a year and a half ago,
99
when my roommate and I started building this, we were no experts.
100
All we knew is that we want to build something.
101
We want to create a solution.
102
We were no speech coaches.
103
We were no public speakers.
104
We were no data scientists.
105
But we had the power of the internet.
106
So we read a bunch of research papers on computational linguistics.
107
We spoke with hundreds of speech coaches,
108
trying to understand how they give feedback on their speech.
109
We watched videos on machine learning and artificial intelligence so
110
that we could codify all these things and create this app because we believe that we can use technology
111
to help people become better versions of ourselves
112
and the reason i'm sharing my story with you guys today is not to tell you guys go out
113
and build apps or be entrepreneurs i'm saying go out
114
and face your fears don't bury them deep inside if you have a problem look for a solution if nothing exists,
115
create that solution.
116
If you don't have the skills, go to Google.
117
Find how you can improve your knowledge and create something.
118
For me, it all started when I was little.
119
That first time I felt the fear of public speaking.
120
That's what empowered me to act.
121
That's what empowered me to go on this journey of becoming a better speaker.
122
And this journey is never ending.
123
You will never see the finish line.
124
In fact, there is no finish line in public speaking.
125
You can always get better.
126
Remember that.
127
You can always become a better speaker.
128
You only stop if you tell yourself you're good enough.
129
Thank you.
130
.
131
By the way, I was recording my speech.
132
Let's see what feedback AuraI gives.
133
Okay.
134
So, I had a few filler words like, you know, and I'm.
135
My pace, okay, 107 words per minute.
136
too bad, good energy, and then some feedback where I was giving.
137
Almost perfect.
138
I think I need to practice a little bit more,
139
and it's saying, looks like you'll be hosting a TED talk at no time.
140
And my speech clarity A plus,
141
and my transcript, and I can even play back my audio and listen to itself.
142
My name is Danish, and my full-time job is to come.
143
AARON MATÉSZAKISIJSKI.
144
Check it out.

  • Can you please rise up and introduce yourself? -
  • How would you feel in this situation? -
  • My heart started racing. -
  • I want to share my ideas. -
  • Take that step and find a solution. -
