Practice Tips

For effective English speaking practice, it’s crucial to embrace the technique of shadowing. Use a shadowing app that allows you to listen to and repeat phrases from the video. Focus on the narrative pace as the video discusses the incident; the tone is serious and urgent, reflecting the gravity of the situation. Start by playing short sections of the transcript aloud, then pause and repeat what you hear, paying close attention to pronunciation and intonation.

The extraction of phrases like “rescue effort” and “trapped underground” can be great for your IELTS speaking practice, as they represent the type of vocabulary you may encounter in the exam. Make your shadowing sessions consistent, aiming for at least 15-20 minutes daily. This regular repetition will significantly contribute to improving your English pronunciation and ensuring you gain fluency in discussing complex subjects with ease. Remember, shadowing works best when you replicate not just the words but the emotional nuances and rhythm of the speech. Enjoy your journey toward mastering these skills!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
