1
Hello, I'm Anita McVeigh and this is the Iran War Today,
2
our daily briefing bringing you up to date with all you
3
need to know on day 88 of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran.
4
Coming up, we'll be live with our correspondents in Washington and Jerusalem them.
5
But let's start with some of today's key developments.
6
The U.S says its latest strikes in Iran were defensive,
7
as America's top diplomat says he believes a deal is still possible.
8
Like anything with something like this,
9
it's going to take a couple days to settle on,
10
even down to the disagreements over a word.
11
Iran accuses the U.S of a gross violation of the ceasefire
12
as the country's supreme leader says Gulf states will no longer be a shield for U.S bases.
13
The internet has been partially restored in Iran after three months of a near total shutdown.
14
And Israeli forces are pushing deeper into Lebanon after Israel's prime minister said his country was at war again with Hezbollah.
15
First today, the U.S military says its latest strikes on Iranian targets were defensive.
16
Iran called them a violation of the current ceasefire and said it had a right to retaliate.
17
All this as diplomatic moves continue to try to bring an end to the war.
18
American military officials say the strikes were taken in self-defense and were designed to protect troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.
19
They reportedly targeted an area near Bandar Abbas,
20
a southern port city and home of an Iranian naval base that sits on the Strait of Hormuz.
21
In a statement, Iran's foreign ministry condemned the attacks,
22
calling them a blatant violation of the ceasefire,
23
while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned it had the right to retaliate.
24
Iranian state television carried comments attributed to the Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei,
25
in which he warned that Gulf states will no longer be a safe haven for U.S bases.
26
Khamenei has not been seen in public since succeeding his late father earlier this year.
27
While following those U.S strikes,
28
America's top diplomat, Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
29
said a deal was still possible and pointed to talks between Iran's top negotiator and foreign minister and Qatar's prime minister.
30
I think there's strong alignment and agreement on what a preliminary draft should look like.
31
I think that like anything with something like this,
32
it's going to take a couple days to settle on even down to the disagreements over a word sentence.
33
So we'll have to work through that.
34
If there's going to be a deal,
35
we're going to have to work through that.
36
But it's either going to be a good deal or there isn't going to be one.
37
Iran said their air defense units had shot down a U.S drone and fired at a fighter jet that entered Iranian airspace.
38
The U.S hasn't confirmed this.
39
The Iranian president, Masoud Pazeshkian,
40
praised the military's defensive capabilities.
41
They did not imagine that our armed forces,
42
our defensive power and our offensive system could perform such feats.
43
It was a completely surprising matter for all of them.
44
In a moment we'll speak to Siavash Adalan from BBC Persian,
45
who's with me in the studio.
46
But first live to Washington and a correspondent there, Tom Simons.
47
Tom, hello to you.
48
What more are the Americans saying about the strikes and indeed the status of the ceasefire?
49
Well, you know what?
50
They're not saying very much,
51
which I think tells its own story.
52
The official statement came from CENTCOM.
53
It was very brief.
54
It said U.S forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from the threat posed by Iranian forces.
55
Now, Marco Rubio, you heard a comment from him there,
56
also added that the target included boats attempting to lay mines and missile launch sites.
57
But apart from that, nothing more.
58
No, for example, outburst on Truth Social from the president,
59
which we might have seen in the past.
60
And I think that tells its own story.
61
The administration is trying to play down the importance of what has happened here in the Gulf of Formuz.
62
They don't want it to look like a breach of a ceasefire there have been previous breaches,
63
they don't want it to affect the negotiations.
64
The only other thing CENTCOM has said today is to deny a local media report
65
that it's planning to restart what's called Operation Freedom,
66
which is the U.S government's operation to help vessels leave the Strait of Hormuz,
67
an operation that lasted about two days.
68
So that's where we are.
69
In fact, the president's been more interested today in his medical appointment at the hospital.
70
He has a six month medical checkup and he said that that has gone perfectly.
71
So we're left with the ongoing negotiations and one other development today,
72
which is that President Trump has called his cabinet for a meeting,
73
not in Florida, not in the White House, but at Camp David.
74
The forest retreat, which is not far from Washington in Maryland and a very rural place.
75
And he's planning to go through some of the big issues
76
facing his administration in a meeting there in the next few days, we expect
77
and Iran is going to be at the top of that list because he has a lot on his plate.
78
He's got to deliver the red lines that he's already promised the American people,
79
nuclear weapons being taken away,
80
any chance of them from Iran,
81
the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and oil prices and markets brought under control.
82
And he's got to do that very quickly
83
because the midterm elections are approaching fast and this is not a very popular war.
84
OK, Tom, thank you very much.
85
Tom Simons in Washington.
86
And with me here is Siavash Adelan from BBC Persian.
87
Siavash, we've heard the view there from Washington.
88
Give us your analysis of the Iranian response to what's been happening in the last 24, 36 hours.
89
Very similar to what Tom was saying,
90
the sentiment is the same in Tehran as it is in Washington.
91
They don't want the incident that took place last night to affect the talks.
92
So that's why we haven't seen any news about possible derailment of the negotiations that are ongoing.
93
The narrative or the account of the Revolutionary Guards about what happened yesterday differs a little bit from what CEDCOM said.
94
CEDCOM said that it acted in self-defense,
95
the IRGC saying that they fired at one American aircraft and a drone.
96
They had to retreat and then they shot down another drone.
97
Very low on details about the casualties and the extent of the damage done and so on.
98
So whatever happened last night,
99
regardless, it's not going to derail the talks.
100
And obviously the casualties and the damage wasn't that much for either side to want to think twice about where they're going.
101
Yeah.
102
And are you hearing anything more about those talks involving the Qataris and what is going on there?
103
I mean, we got a hint,
104
not much of a hint,
105
but a hint of hope still from Marco Rubio,
106
but not much detail, clearly.
107
Not much detail from the Iranian side either.
108
The head of Iran's negotiating team,
109
Mohammad Bahar Qalibov just returned from Qatar.
110
Qatar now is playing a very important part in this.
111
It's becoming, like Pakistan, one of the mediators.
112
And the reason for that is
113
that the way Qatar plays into these talks is one of
114
the demands for Iran in order to achieve this ceasefire is the unfreezing of its assets that is held in Qatar.
115
Now, we don't know how much.
116
We know it's part of the talks,
117
but we don't know how much the Americans are planning to allow Iranians to have back from the assets that were frozen.
118
Six billion, some say 12 billion, some say 24 billion.
119
So we have to wait and see.
120
And another message from the supreme leader,
121
who we still haven't seen.
122
The supreme leader has delivered a message.
123
It's a traditional message that the previous supreme leader always delivered on the occasion of Hajj,
124
the pilgrimage to Mecca.
125
His, like his father, delivering another message and more or less the same rhetoric,
126
just saying that Iran's traditional stance hasn't changed.
127
They talked about the destruction of Israel,
128
which is not new, and also talked about the countries in the region,
129
they cannot host U.S bases anymore,
130
and they cannot rely on U.S.'s security umbrella in the region.
131
And a question, Siavash, on that restoration,
132
partial restoration of internet connectivity in Iran.
133
I guess a big question over whether that will be sustained.
134
It depends on what happens.
135
If there's a resumption of hostilities,
136
probably they'll have to shut it back down again.
137
But that's the most important news for Iranians today.
138
It's a very happy occasion.
139
As you can imagine, after 88 days of not being connected to the internet,
140
suddenly today they have this connection.
141
I just posted something on Exeng,
142
Iranians, welcome back to the World Wide Web.
143
And there was so much joy and happiness of a right that was taken from them for 88 days.
144
And according to Netblocks, relative connection is being restored.
145
A lot of people are talking with their relatives, friends.
146
There are a lot of communication back and forth.
147
For the first time, people are managing to see each other through video calls,
148
Gmail's again back online.
149
So it's a very good day for Iranians.
150
It's like, as one Iranian described,
151
coming out of a cave after 88 days.
152
Yes, I can imagine lots of people will be absolutely making the most of that connectivity.
153
Siavash, thank you very much.
154
Siavash Adalan from BBC Persian.
155
Now, Israel has carried out waves of airstrikes across Lebanon despite a nominal ceasefire.
156
It's after the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country was at war again with Hezbollah.
157
Lebanon's health ministry says 11 people,
158
including two children, have been killed.
159
The Israeli military says it struck more than 100 Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon and in the Beqar Valley in the east.
160
Israel says it's acting in self-defense as the Iranian-backed group continues
161
to launch explosive drones at its soldiers in the south of Lebanon and at Israeli civilians across the border.
162
There were traffic jams in one suburb of South Beirut on
163
Monday night as residents fled their homes there after Benjamin Netanyahu's warning.
164
The Israeli government released pictures of Mr. Netanyahu holding talks in Tel Aviv today with his defense minister,
165
Israel Katz, and military chiefs.
166
Reports say the military is now expanding its ground defensive deeper into Lebanon.
167
And let's go to our correspondent,
168
Amir Nader, who is in Jerusalem for us.
169
Amir, hello to you.
170
What more can you tell us about what you're hearing about the situation inside Lebanon?
171
Well, the statement from Prime Minister Netanyahu tonight is significant
172
that he has ordered his military to cross across this yellow line
173
that had been in place since the beginning of this very loose ceasefire just over a month ago.
174
It's an area occupied by Israeli troops in the south of Lebanon,
175
about 10 kilometers deep into the country.
176
Now, he's ordered the troops to cross.
177
And we've already heard reports from Hezbollah claiming that they have been engaging Israeli troops
178
in a town near a major city in the south called Nabatea.
179
Hezbollah claimed to repelled a unit of the Israeli military who were approaching this city.
180
Nabatea today, I mean, this is a city that's been bombed very heavily throughout the war,
181
since the war really erupted after October the 7th in Gaza,
182
and we saw fighting begin with Hezbollah.
183
And Israel, Nabatea, has suffered much damage.
184
Now it's becoming a site,
185
again, it looks like, of renewed Israeli attacks.
186
They've ordered the city to evacuate.
187
That residents who remain in the city should leave today ahead of planned attacks.
188
And as you mentioned, there have been a wave of other Israeli airstrikes throughout the the country,
189
be it in the Bekar Valley in the east on the border with Syria
190
or in a number of other towns and cities in the south.
191
Scenes really of panic and fear after a number of airstrikes in Mashgara,
192
a town in the south.
193
Eleven people killed, two women and children and a child,
194
according to local health authorities there.
195
And in Sarifa, reports by the local health authorities there that a first responder center was struck by an Israeli airstrike,
196
killing two paramedics, according to the local authorities there.
197
And then we've had this report in Israeli media,
198
in this public broadcaster, Cannes,
199
saying that the Israeli army has issued orders to mobilize reserve troops.
200
So we're really getting the sense that the military is going to ramp up this ground operation,
201
pushing into the south of Lebanon,
202
as well as these increased airstrikes.
203
So, Amir, this ramping up of the Israeli ground operation,
204
why is this happening now?
205
It's a good question.
206
It's widely held that Prime Minister Netanyahu is against the emerging Iran-U.S ceasefire deal.
207
He wants to see further strikes on the Iranian regime.
208
Of course, He was a...
209
It's widely believed he talked President Trump into launching the war on Iran,
210
suggesting that the regime could be toppled,
211
but still believes more damage should be done to the government in Iran.
212
But he's also against the deal because Iran has consistently demanded an end to the war on all fronts,
213
whereas Prime Minister Netanyahu has vowed to dismantle and disarm Hezbollah and to remove the threat from Hezbollah.
214
So if he is to be forced into a ceasefire deal where Hezbollah hasn't been completely dismantled and disarmed,
215
that is obviously not meeting up to the vows he's made,
216
despite the Lebanese government repeatedly saying
217
that any disarmament of Hezbollah will only come through a ceasefire deal and through a cessation of hostilities.
218
Okay, Emir, thank you very much.
219
Emir Neidah there in Jerusalem for us.
220
Now, to finish today's edition of the Iran war today,
221
we wanted to take a look at the bigger picture of where we are right now.
222
With her analysis, here's our South Asia correspondent, President Azadeh Moshiri.
223
The state of play in negotiations between Iran and the United States is extremely unclear.
224
It was only on Sunday that in that building behind me, the U.S.
225
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the press call that we could expect good news on reopening the strait in hours.
226
Now days later, it's clear that that hasn't happened.
227
Instead, the United States has conducted what it's calling defensive strikes on southern Iran.
228
Now Marco Rubio is saying
229
that perhaps there might be a partial agreement in days as Iranian negotiators passed through the language in Doha.
230
And then in parallel, the Israeli Prime Minister,
231
Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that Israel will intensify strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
232
And it's worth remembering that Iranian officials see these two conflicts as deeply intertwined,
233
so it's unclear how that will present any sort of delay.
234
And as for a final peace deal,
235
that has been kicked down the road,
236
the priority being opening this vital shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz that has triggered global energy crisis.
237
Asaday Mishiri in Delhi.
238
And with his assessment of what's happened over the last few days and where it leaves us,
239
here's our international editor, Jeremy Bowen.
240
We've been here before on numerous occasions.
241
And it's this oscillation between Donald Trump issuing a very optimistic statement,
242
more guarded statements from others,
243
then something happens to make it look less optimistic.
244
And what we're lacking in this current cycle is some terrible threat from him.
245
But maybe that'll come too.
246
I mean, I think the fact is that there is,
247
there appears to have been progress on not an overall deal,
248
but on this one page memorandum of understanding where essentially they
249
work out what it is they need to discuss over a period of at least two months following the signing of that.
250
And they essentially managed to defer,
251
therefore, a lot of harder issues.
252
And meanwhile, there would be a smaller deal,
253
but still very, very significant,
254
to try to open the straight of all moves.
255
And in return for that,
256
Iran's going to want something,
257
maybe the release of billions of dollars worth of frozen funds.
258
I mean, who knows?
259
But the point is, what this comes down to,
260
it's quite clear, is that Donald Trump is desperately trying to find ways to somehow reverse out of this very ill-advised war,
261
which he entered into without really working out where it was going to go,
262
thinking he'd get a very quick victory.
263
and a trade-off between that and trying to find a way to claim victory at the end of it.
264
And it's proving to be a circle that's impossible to square,
265
not least because the Iranians don't believe they've been beaten far from it.
266
They think they've got the upper hand in this.
267
If you look at the shopping list of things
268
that Donald Trump wanted from the war
269
when he made his first speech on the subject at his Florida base at Mar-a-Lago back on the 28th of February,
270
a long time ago now,
271
None of those things have come to pass,
272
not least regime change and all the other things that were on his shopping list.
273
This is increasingly looking like for America,
274
despite all its power, despite many tactical victories,
275
despite the levels of destruction that the Americans and the Israelis have inflicted on Iran,
276
it looks very much like strategically it's more of a defeat.
277
