43
From ABC News World Headquarters in New York,
44
this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
45
Good evening.
46
We begin tonight with breaking news.
47
Authorities late today revealing chilling new details on that horrific attack on an Islamic center in San Diego.
48
Now describing two teenage gunmen who they say charged into the facility in body armor and multiple weapons,
49
killing three people, including a hero security guard who tried to take them on and was killed.
50
Late today, police now revealing the heavily armed teenagers,
51
17 and 18 years old,
52
were carrying shotguns, rifles and handguns as they stormed the center.
53
The security guard, a father of eight,
54
confronting them and opening fire.
55
Police say the suspects came within 15 feet of some 140 children inside at the time.
56
Those children were raced to safety and that hero guard is now credited with slowing down the gunman.
57
Tonight, what we're now learning about the mother of one of the suspects,
58
her urgent warning to police before the shooting.
59
And tonight we have just learned that police did have prior contact with one of those suspected shooters.
60
ABC's Trevor Ralt on the scene,
61
leading us off again tonight.
62
Tonight, authorities have revealed the two shooters were wearing body armor and camouflage,
63
armed with shotguns, rifles, and handguns when they stormed the Islamic Center of San Diego,
64
shooting and killing three people,
65
including a hero security guard.
66
And they live-streamed the attack using what appear to be helmet cameras.
67
That security guard, now identified as Amin Abdullah,
68
a father of eight, seen smiling in this recent video,
69
spotted the suspects and opened fire and authorities are convinced he helped save lives.
70
You can see the security guard reach for his radio and put out the lockdown protocol.
71
The security guard then continued to engage in a gun battle with these two suspects.
72
The shooters made it inside the front entrance of a building just feet away from school children.
73
I went inside the closet with my whole class.
74
We heard like 12 or like 16 gunshots.
75
Police say the suspects went room by room and found no one.
76
They headed back outside to the parking lot to confront and kill Nansur Kazeha,
77
who ran a shop in the mosque for 40 years,
78
and Nader Awad, whose wife taught at the school,
79
and he was the first to call 911.
80
Police believe the suspects heard the sound of rapidly approaching sirens and fled the scene.
81
This new video from blocks away shows the suspects then opening fire at a landscaper who wasn't injured.
82
Both shooters then later found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
83
Tonight, sources say the suspects are 17-year-old Kane Clark,
84
a high school wrestler, and 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez.
85
The FBI says they met and were radicalized online and shared a broad hatred of different races and religions.
86
The live stream appears to show them wearing neo-Nazi symbols.
87
I can confirm there has been a manifesto that's been recovered.
88
They didn't discriminate on who they hated.
89
Police say the 17 year old suspect's mother had called police two hours before the shooting,
90
fearing he was suicidal, saying her weapons and vehicle were missing,
91
setting off a manhunt before the attack.
92
And tonight, the daughter of that hero security guard who was killed speaking out.
93
My father, my dad, he was a loving father,
94
husband, son, brother, and uncle.
95
To me, my dad was a role model.
96
He was a best friend.
97
He was the best, absolute best dad in the world.
98
He was my protector.
99
And David, we have just learned from sources
100
that a person previously reported the 18-year-old suspect in this case and police made contact with him.
101
They were reported that he was interested in extremism and mass casualty attacks.
102
David.
103
So many grateful to that hero security guard tonight.
104
Trevor Ault, thank you.
105
Meantime, here in New York City tonight,
106
the horrific and deadly scene in midtown Manhattan.
107
A woman opening her car door and falling,
108
disappearing down an open manhole,
109
falling several feet below into intense heat.
110
witnesses could hear her screaming, I'm dying.
111
How this happened, and here's our chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Koturski, now.
112
Tonight, the horrific scene in midtown Manhattan where a 56-year-old mother and grandmother fell to her death through an uncovered manhole.
113
Donna K.
114
Gosaje parked her Mercedes SUV in front of Cartier and atop the open manhole,
115
stepping from the car and dropping 10 feet.
116
As soon as she stepped out,
117
it's like she took one step forward and just disappeared.
118
The medical examiner's office is still investigating the woman's death,
119
but police said when she fell through the hole,
120
she went into cardiac arrest from the intense steam heat.
121
Witnesses describing her cries for help.
122
She was screaming, I'm dying.
123
That's what I kept hearing her screaming over and over, I'm dying.
124
Tonight, the utility responsible for the manhole says the cover was
125
dislodged after a multi-axle truck turning onto 52nd Street from Fifth Avenue drove over it.
126
Twelve minutes later, the suburban grandmother parked in that spot.
127
Con Edison said while this is a rare occurrence,
128
manhole covers can get displaced by heavy vehicles.
129
Our thoughts remain with our family and safety remains our top priority.
130
The mayor's office is promising a full investigation tonight, David.
131
But so far, police believe this was a tragic accident and something every New York City pedestrian fears.
132
David, it is just horrific.
133
Aaron Katursky, thank you.
134
Also breaking tonight, severe storms across multiple states millions of Americans right now on alert for dangerous thunderstorms,
135
damaging winds coming tonight.
136
At least 19 reported tornadoes in five states already.
137
Those new storms now coming.
138
And record heat in the northeast right through tomorrow now.
139
Records set in Philadelphia today.
140
Intense heat tonight from New York City right up to Boston.
141
Chief Meteorologist Ginger Z now with the forecast and the images tonight.
142
It's on the ground right there.
143
Tonight, the terrifying images of this twister in Kansas spotted by AccuWeather chasers.
144
Just one of at least 19 reported overnight.
145
An incredible streak, seven nights in a row,
146
and another dangerous night ahead.
147
We saw the damage when the sun came up in Holton.
148
Of the more than 300 severe storm reports in the last 24 hours,
149
that dented and collapsed top of a silo that used to be towering.
150
Now all of the content spilled here,
151
and the barn behind the tree shredded from these storms.
152
Meanwhile, the East Coast is sweltering.
153
98 in Philadelphia, an all-time May record.
154
96 in Boston, 93 in New York City.
155
And in the West, multiple new fires breaking out tonight.
156
The Bain Fire east of Los Angeles forcing families to flee.
157
Multiple people reportedly injured.
158
And some 750 firefighters battling the Sandy Fire outside Los Angeles that exploded Monday.
159
Winds and heat fueling the flames again tonight.
160
A country of extremes for sure.
161
Let's get right back to Ginger with us tonight and the forecast.
162
Hi, Ginger.
163
Hi, David a congested line of severe thunderstorms with damaging wind from Ontario,
164
Canada down to Henryville, Indiana right now.
165
We'll watch that progress east.
166
But there's a new watch up for San Angelo and down into Del Rio.
167
That's for hail up to two and a half inches in diameter,
168
winds over 70 miles per hour.
169
That same front will bring these storms east as we go through tonight.
170
We track it and time it.
171
It's New York City down through the mid-Atlantic and even Boston by tomorrow afternoon and evening.
172
That is the very front that will be breaking this heat apart because we cannot stay with these records.
173
But tomorrow you'll do it again from Boston to Philadelphia in the 90s,
174
Richmond to 98 degrees before we all take a major slide by almost 30 degrees for the weekend.
175
David.
176
All right, 24 hours more of this intense heat.
177
Ginger, we'll see you first thing in the morning.
178
Thanks.
179
Tonight here, alarming new developments in this deadly Ebola outbreak
180
that American doctor infected has now been raced to Germany for emergency medical care.
181
The team racing him out wearing protective gear from head to toe as the number of cases now spikes.
182
Here's ABC's Faith Abube.
183
Tonight, that American doctor, a father of four,
184
who was infected with the Ebola virus while working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
185
now on his way to Germany for medical care.
186
Everybody in the ambulance was wearing what they call full PPE, you know, the.. personal protective equipment,
187
the suits, the boots, the goggles, the gloves.
188
There's not one centimeter of exposed skin.
189
The Christian Missions Organization Surge says Dr. Peter Stafford was transported onto the plane in a protective bubble.
190
We saw pictures of him in a,
191
like a plastic bubble about the size of a casket that I think is ventilated for him.
192
The doctor's family and another doctor also possibly exposed but showing no symptoms.
193
Symptoms of the Ebola virus can start with fever,
194
muscle weakness and headaches, then progress to internal bleeding and possible death.
195
Tonight, the number of suspected deaths in Central Africa tied to Ebola rising to at least 130 people.
196
Suspected cases skyrocketing to more than 500.
197
And David, the CDC insists there are no Ebola cases here on U.S soil,
198
but they are urging doctors across the country to screen symptomatic patients who recently visited the outbreak area.
199
David.
200
Faith Abube with us tonight.
201
Faith, thank you.
202
We turn now to President Trump and his taxes and the extraordinary order now from the Justice Department,
203
now barring the IRS from investigating President Trump,
204
his sons and their companies.
205
It comes as the Trump administration also defends tonight the Justice Department's new fund paid for by taxpayers, $1.8 billion,
206
to compensate Trump allies, including some January 6th defendants.
207
Here's Jonathan Karl.
208
Tonight, in an extraordinary move,
209
the Justice Department declared the IRS is,
210
quote, forever barred and precluded from auditing President Trump,
211
his family, his oldest sons,
212
and their companies or pursuing any claims for past actions.
213
It's part of the unprecedented settlement after President Trump dropped his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.
214
The deal was orchestrated by the head of the DOJ,
215
acting Attorney General Todd Blanche,
216
who is Trump's former personal attorney.
217
Blanche faced tough questions on Capitol Hill today.
218
You're the president's consigliere.
219
Your perspective is completely wrong, Senator.
220
Well, I think the facts will prove me right.
221
The president's settlement also creates a nearly $1.8 billion fund,
222
taxpayer money, to pay for Trump allies or anyone else who claims they were mistreated by the Biden Justice Department.
223
It's a group that includes the roughly 600 people charged with obstructing or assaulting police on January 6th.
224
Will individuals who assaulted Capitol Hill police officers be eligible for this fund?
225
Well, as it makes plain, anybody is...
226
Just let me know if they're eligible for the fund.
227
Anybody in this country is eligible to apply if they believe they're a victim of a position.
228
At the White House, I followed up with Vice President J.D.
229
Vance.
230
I assume you're not going to apply and you don't think you should get money out of this fund.
231
So isn't it just as easy to say that people that attacked police officers should not get taxpayer money from this fund?
232
Well, look, John, we're not trying to give money to anybody who attacked a police officer.
233
We're trying to compensate people where the book was thrown at them.
234
They were mistreated by the legal system.
235
We do have people who were accused of attacking law enforcement officers.
236
That doesn't mean that we're going to completely ignore some of the claims that they're going to make.
237
It comes as Republicans are trying to set aside another $1 billion in taxpayer money for President Trump's new ballroom.
238
They say it's for security.
239
The president taking reporters on a tour of the construction site today.
240
You mentioned that this is being paid for,
241
not a spot here, but why is Congress in policy?
242
Well, they're not.
243
Congress is approving money for security.
244
It may go, some of it may go here for additional security.
245
I don't know.
246
Back to that $1.8 billion fund,
247
some of which could go to people who attacked the Capitol building on January 6th.
248
It's not just Democrats who don't like it.
249
Senate Republican leader John Thune said today,
250
quote, I am not a big fan.
251
John Carl with us.
252
John, thank you.
253
Tonight to that horrific murder case in New Jersey,
254
a man convicted of killing his own brother and his brother's wife and children,
255
then setting their home on fire,
256
then setting his own home on fire,
257
his family inside to make it look like the whole family had been targeted.
258
What the judge has now decided in this case.
259
Here's Stephanie Ramos.
260
Tonight, a New Jersey man convicted of killing his brother
261
and his brother's wife and children sentenced to life in prison without parole.
262
59-year-old Paul Canero was convicted in February of fatally shooting his brother Keith and stabbing Keith's wife and their two children,
263
just 8 and 11 years old,
264
at their family home in 2018 before lighting the home on fire.
265
Prosecutors say he then traveled to his own home and lit it on fire,
266
his wife and two daughters still inside to make it seem the extended family had been targeted.
267
Canero's family was unharmed.
268
At the sentencing hearing today,
269
a county judge calling Canero a heartless, brutal killer.
270
These children experienced imaginable fear in the final moments of their lives as their uncle relentlessly pursued and attacked them.
271
Prosecutors say Canero was motivated by jealousy of his brother's financial success
272
and in an attempt to conceal years of theft from a family company.
273
Paul Canaro will spend the rest of his natural life behind the walls of a prison,
274
never to see the light of day.
275
Canaro was sentenced to four consecutive life terms for the murders,
276
along with additional sentences on charges,
277
including arson and weapons possession.
278
Stephanie Ramos reporting.
279
Thank you.
280
Tonight, dramatic new images showing the fiery crash of that UPS cargo plane in Louisville.
281
The NTSB releasing new surveillance now,
282
showing the left engine right there tearing off the wing.
283
Just seconds after takeoff, you'll remember 15 people were killed.
284
Investigators say components connecting the engine to the wing showed signs of cracking.
285
Tonight, major primaries being watched.
286
Right now, President Trump taking aim at one of his top political targets,
287
Republican Congressman Thomas Massey of Kentucky.
288
Let's bring in Jay O'Brien tonight.
289
Jay?
290
David, Republican Congressman Thomas Massey of Kentucky was President Trump's number one political target this year.
291
Massey now losing that primary.
292
Trump was furious at Massey for his push to release the Epstein files,
293
his opposition to the war with Iran.
294
Trump even personally campaigning for Massey's primary challenger, ex-Navy SEAL Ed Gowrine.
295
This was the most expensive primary in House history, upwards of $32 million spent.
296
And before the polls closed,
297
Massey telling me that no matter what happens,
298
he will continue to speak his mind,
299
even if that means crossing the president.
300
David.
301
J. O'Brien, thank you.
302
When we come back, the desperate search on the east coast of the ocean, a missing swimmer.
303
dozens of people making a human chain to try to help in this search.
304
Also ahead here, the Lyft driver now accusing riders of damaging his car.
305
The photos he used as proof authorities say made with artificial intelligence,
306
a warning for all riders.
307
And what's now been spotted tonight in a national park for the first time in more than 100 years.
308
A lot more news ahead.
309
Don't go away.
310
Tonight, the 24-hour search now for a missing swimmer off Ocean City, New Jersey beach patrol rescued one person,
311
but a 20-year-old with him struck by a wave falling off a boogie board was swept away.
312
In the first hours, dozens were seen forming a human chain from the beach trying to help.
313
So far, no sign of the swimmer.
314
Overseas tonight, after President Trump's summit in China,
315
now it's Vladimir Putin being welcomed by President Xi.
316
It was just last week when President Trump stepped off Air Force One children waving Chinese and American flags.
317
Look at this, Putin receiving a similar welcome just today.
318
Greeted by Chinese children waving Chinese and Russian flags now there for a summit with its ally, China.
319
When we come back tonight,
320
the Lyft driver accusing riders of damaging his vehicle using artificial intelligence to come up with photos,
321
a warning to all riders,
322
and what's been seen in a national park for the first time in 100 years.
323
To the index, a father from Boca Raton,
324
Florida, claiming a Lyft driver used AI photos to falsely accuse his teen daughters of damaging his car,
325
charging a $75 fee.
326
They sent the father photos,
327
but at the bottom right, the Gemini logo.
328
Now, Gemini is Google's AI assistant that can generate false images.
329
Lyft has now apologized and blocked the driver from their app.
330
Tonight, last call for Schlitz beer.
331
The final batch will be brewed in Wisconsin this weekend after 177 years,
332
marketed for years as, quote,
333
the beer that made Milwaukee famous.
334
When we come back tonight, the remarkable sight.
335
The first time in more than 100 years this has been seen in a national park.
336
Finally tonight here, the remarkable return to Sequoia National Park.
337
Tonight, what hasn't been seen in more than a century,
338
now marking an historic return in Sequoia National Park in California.
339
The first time in more than 100 years,
340
a gray wolf has been recorded there.
341
The three-year-old female wolf has been tracked by scientists and by wildlife groups,
342
including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
343
Grey wolves are a protected,
344
endangered species in the state,
345
gone from California since the 1920s.
346
They began returning in 2011.
347
Tonight, the new milestone, the first publicly known grey wolf in Sequoia National Park in more than 100 years.
348
The grey wolf's return.
349
