1
Hi everybody and welcome to this video.
2
We want to have a look at tone units and tonic syllables.
3
But first of all, thank you so much for your many lovely comments in my videos and on my channel.
4
I love hearing from you.
5
Thank you so much.
6
But let's get back on track.
7
So what are tone units the way we speak.
8
Now, speech in English is organized into tone units.
9
Thank you.
10
not into individual words or sentences.
11
Often we think of it this way, but that is not really accurate.
12
Thank you.
13
Tone units are the building blocks of all spoken communication.
14
So can you give an example?
15
This might sound a bit technical so far. Of course.
16
Let's have a look here.
17
We have two sentences.
18
The car stopped, we'd arrived at the park and got out.
19
and to put any capital letters into lowercase.
20
We will use other symbols to show tone units, and we will use capital letters for another purpose later.
21
So here are the sentences again but we've removed all the punctuation and capital letters.
22
Now, let's listen how the speech is divided up into short pieces here.
23
Listen carefully.
24
The car stopped.
25
We'd arrived at the park and got out.
26
Thank you.
27
Here again are the different units of speech.
28
And this time you can see a little symbol appearing where there was a little break.
29
The car stopped.
30
We'd arrived at the park and got out.
31
These short pieces are called tone units.
32
We're going to use this symbol here, those two forward slashes, to show a tone unit boundary.
33
Thank you.
34
Here's some more examples.
35
Our context is a day at the park.
36
Let's have a look at the text.
37
We had brought a picnic, a blanket and some games for the children.
38
It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine.
39
Finally, we had a chance to relax.
40
But then, the accident happened.
41
So this is our little story and let's have a look what happens when we say this.
42
Let's see if you can find the tone units.
43
Let's look at the first part.
44
Again, I have removed all the punctuation and capital letters.
45
Let's listen.
46
We had brought a picnic, a blanket and some games for the children.
47
Here are the town unit boundaries.
48
We had brought a picnic.
49
a blanket and some games for the children.
50
You can hear a little pause in between each tone unit.
51
Now I have a bit of a longer pause so you can hear it properly,
52
but in natural speech there is a pause but it is still very short.
53
We had brought a picnic, a blanket and some games for the children.
54
What is important is that there is no pause whatsoever in between a tone unit.
55
Let's have a look at the next part.
56
It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine.
57
Here are the tone units and their boundaries.
58
It was a beautiful day.
59
with blue skies and sunshine. And the last part.
60
Finally, we had a chance to relax.
61
But then the accident happened.
62
And once again, here are the tone units.
63
Finally, we had a chance to relax.
64
But then the accident happened.
65
So this sentence, originally it was one sentence, is really consisting of one,
66
two, three, four tone units in total.
67
So you can see when we talk about pronunciation and
68
when we want to have a look at what happens when we speak,
69
it makes much more sense to think of tone units and to show the tone units rather than the sentence.
70
Thank you.
71
Now so well done you've found already some tone units and you've heard some Let's just revise.
72
A tone unit or tone units are the basic building blocks of spoken English.
73
When we hear spoken English, it is heard as organized into tone units.
74
And this is really important.
75
We hear it organized into tone units, not sentences.
76
In written English, we think of individual words and sentences.
77
But in spoken English we hear tone units.
78
And tone units and sentences are not the same.
79
Good.
80
In a tone unit, all the sounds of the words join together.
81
They are linked.
82
Thank you.
83
Thank you.
84
Often, a town unit sounds like one long word to the listener.
85
Thank you.
86
Let's have a look at a comparison to illustrate what that means.
87
For example, all the sounds of a word linked together to form a word, and you know that already.
88
Let's have a look at an example: the word "sunshine".
89
We had this word come up before in the sentence: "It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine".
90
"Sunshine" consists of several sounds.
91
Peace.
92
ah, nn, sh, i, nn.
93
But obviously, I do not say them individually.
94
Yeah.
95
I would link them up.
96
SUNSHINE And quickly...
97
sunshine So we link those sounds together to form a word.
98
"Sunshine." sunshine In the same way,
99
all the sounds of the words link together to form a tone unit.
100
Here was our original tone unit. And sunshine. And sunshine.
101
You can see the transcript next to the spelling.
102
And here you can see very clearly that it really sounds and looks like one word.
103
and sunshine and sunshine.
104
There's no pause in between and the word 'and' has been reduced to 'n' and joined with sunshine and sunshine and sunshine.
105
This happens in all tone units.
106
All the sounds link together.
107
Thank you.
108
Let's look at more tone unit examples in which the sounds link together.
109
Thank you.
110
Let's have a look at number one.
111
I will always read them out and I want you to concentrate on the linking between the words of each tone unit.
112
Number 1.
113
They arrived.
114
They arrived.
115
Number two: It was early.
116
It was early.
117
Number three.
118
There were toys.
119
There were toys.
120
Number four: for children, for children.
121
Number five: "It was summer.
122
It was summer." Number six, she was shy, she was shy.
123
Number seven where the shop was Thank you.
124
Can you hear how the sounds of these words run together to form the tone unit?
125
I hope so.
126
In each of these tone units, one syllable is stressed more than the others.
127
Let's have a look at the first three again.
128
Listen carefully and see if you can identify the syllable that is stressed more.
129
Number one: They arrived.
130
They arrived.
131
Here, arrived is stressed more.
132
Remember that the word arrived consists of two syllables.
133
Arrived The second syllable is stressed.
134
The first one isn't.
135
Number two.
136
It was early.
137
It was early.
138
Here /ɛ / is stressed in early.
139
Early also consists of two syllables, but here the first syllable is stressed.
140
It was early.
141
It was early.
142
Number three.
143
There were toys.
144
There were toys.
145
Here, toys is stressed.
146
Toys only consists of one syllable and therefore that is the one that is stressed.
147
Now, these stressed syllables are called tonic syllables.
148
In each of the tone units we have one stressed syllable and one stressed syllable only in our examples.
149
And those are the tonic syllables of the tone unit.
150
Thank you.
151
Now we will show tonic syllables in capitals in this video.
152
So have a look again at our three examples.
153
They arrived.
154
Arrived is now in capital letters and that means this is the tonic syllable.
155
Thank you.
156
Here are more tonic syllables from our earlier examples.
157
I'll read them out one more time.
158
Pay attention to the tonic syllables and how they are more prominent and stressed than the rest.
159
Number one: They arrived.
160
Number two: It was early.
161
Number three: They were toys.
162
Number four: For children.
163
Number five: It was summer.
164
Number six.
165
She was shy.
166
Number seven, where the shot was.
167
Some of the tone units have tonic syllables that consist only of one syllable like toys,
168
shy and sharp in number three, six and seven.
169
And the other tone units all have tonic syllables in words that are more than one syllable long.
170
Arrived, early children, summer.
171
So those all consist of two syllables, but only one is stressed and that is the tonic syllable.
172
In our example of course, you could also have a word with three
173
or four syllables where one is stressed and that could be the tonic syllable as well.
174
Thank you.
175
So in our example here, All tone units have only one tonic syllable.
176
However, let's look at another tone unit.
177
Listen carefully.
178
The car stopped.
179
The car stopped.
180
What is different here?
181
Thank you.
182
Thank you.
183
This town unit has two syllables that are stressed.
184
car and stopped.
185
The car stopped.
186
Can you find the two stressed syllables in the following example?
187
Listen carefully.
188
The playground was full.
189
The playground was full.
190
Thank you.
191
Play and playground and 'full' are the two stressed syllables in this tone unit.
192
Thank you.
193
They ran across.
194
They ran across.
195
Here, 'ran' and 'cross' in the word 'across' are both stressed.
196
Thank you looking at the ducks Look and looking and ducks are both stressed.
197
Looking at the ducks.
198
Thank you.
199
Now, if we have a tone unit with two stressed syllables,
200
We need to decide which of the two is the tonic syllable.
201
Now.
202
These two are not stressed in quite the same way.
203
Yes, we would say they're both prominent, they're both stressed, but not in quite the same way.
204
Thank you.
205
In the last stressed syllable of a tone unit, there's a fall -in pitch.
206
Listen carefully.
207
The car stopped The car stopped Thank you.
208
The last stressed syllable in each tone unit is the tonic syllable.
209
The tonic syllable is underlined.
210
So for our example in this video and the ones following, we will write stressed syllables in capitals.
211
and the tonic syllable will be underlined.
212
Here are some more examples from the tone units earlier.
213
The playground was full.
214
Full is the tonic syllable.
215
They ran across.
216
Cross is the tonic syllable.
217
Looking at the ducks.
218
'Dax' is the tonic syllable.
219
um Here is a summary.
220
Spoken English is organised into smaller pieces called tone units.
221
This helps the listener because...
222
The message is heard in smaller pieces, which we can hear one at a time.
223
and because deciding which words really which syllables to stress shows what is important in our message.
224
Thank you.
225
And as a result, it is easier for the listener to understand you.
226
Remember, try to make it easy for the listener to understand you.
227
Learn more about the pronunciation system of English.
228
Thank you.
229
Why?
230
Well, because so you can feel at home using it.
231
And the pronunciation system of English does not just cover sounds or word stress.
232
Really, really important are sentence stress and intonation and tone units and tonic syllables form an important part.
233
Develop a good understanding of the pronunciation and intonation of English.
234
This is so important.
235
People will find it much much easier to understand you.
236
It all starts with learning to listen well.
237
And remember, there are two ways of listening.
238
You can listen to the "what" and you can listen to the 'how' "What" means this is all about the content,
239
what is being said, what the message is.
240
But the "how" is about how things are said.
241
This is about the pronunciation.
242
If you want to become better at spoken English and pronunciation, you need to focus on the how.
243
Listen to how people say things and then pay attention to how you say them.
244
And this will help you to improve your pronunciation.
245
Now remember, you can find more free materials and videos to help you improve your pronunciation on my channel, Billy English.

247
Like Sophia did, she passed both her phonology exams and I was so delighted to hear from her.
248
Thank you.
