So containment is this idea that you can focus your effort
3
and control very much on the cases their contacts
4
so you're not causing disruption to the wider population you have a case
5
that comes in you isolate them you work out who they've
6
come into contact with who's potentially these opportunities for exposure
7
and then you can follow up those people maybe quarantine them to make sure
8
that no further transmission happens so it's a very kind of focused targeted method
9
and for SARS it worked remarkably well but I think for this infection because some cases are going missed and being undetected,
10
you've really got to be capturing a large chunk of people at risk.
11
If a few slip through the net,
12
potentially you're going to get an outbreak.
13
In that respect, it would be about massive changes in our social interactions.
14
And so that would require,
15
of the opportunities that could spread the virus,
16
so these kind of close contacts,
17
everybody in the population on average would be needing to reduce
18
those interactions potentially by by two-thirds to bring it under control and so that that might be
19
through through working from home from changing you know lifestyle
20
and kind of where you go and crowded places and dinners
21
and then of course these measures things like school closures
22
and other things that they just attempt to reduce the social mixing of a population
23
it's not just whose hand you shake it's whose hand
24
that person goes on to shake
25
and i think we need to think about these second-degree steps
26
that you might think you have low risk and you're in a younger group,
27
but you're often going to be a very short step away from someone who's going to get hit very hard by this.
28
And I think we really need to be socially minded
29
and think this could be quite dramatic in terms of change of behaviour,
30
but it needs to be to reduce the impact that we're potentially facing.
31
I think it's hard to pin down exactly,
32
but I think one thing to bear in mind is
33
that there's not so much evidence that this is a kind of aerosol and it goes really far,
34
that it is reasonably short distances.
35
So, you know, I don't think it's the case
36
that you're sitting a few metres away from someone and the virus is somehow going to get across.
37
I think it's really, it's as close to interactions.
38
It's why we're seeing so many transmission events occur in things like meals and really kind of tight knit groups.
39
Because if you imagine, that's where you can get virus out and onto surfaces and onto hands and onto faces.
40
And it's really kind of situations like that we've got to think more about.
41
I think that's what people are trying to piece together.
42
First, in terms of what works.
43
It's only really in the last few weeks we've got a sense
44
that this thing can be controllable with this extent of interventions.
45
But of course, not all countries can do what China have done some of these measures incur a huge social,
46
economic, psychological burden on populations.
47
And of course, there's the time limit.
48
China have had them in for six weeks,
49
and it's tough to maintain that.
50
So we need to think of these trade-offs of actually of all the things we can ask people to do,
51
what's going to have the most impact on actually reducing the burden?
