They say they heard a huge boom and were hit by a blast wave knocking them to the ground.

And some people fell unconscious.

Now, it is believed the cause was a gas explosion deep underground.

These images from the site in northern China show emergency teams and some coal miners,

some of those rescuers, going back down into the mine.

China's Ministry of Emergency Preparedness says it sent 345 personnel from six rescue teams to support this operation.

Now, this happened in in the Shang-Zhi province at a mine run by a large Chinese conglomerate,

the Tongzhu Group.

This region is one of China's poorer areas,

but it's well known as China's capital of mining.

Back in the early 2000s,

there were numerous mining accidents,

some involving gas explosions or flooding, others illegal mining.

And China's state media today says the country's government has ordered an immediate nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities.

They're said to include concealed mining faces,

the falsification of safety monitoring data,

unclear numbers of underground workers as well as illegal subcontracting or transfer of contracts.

Only when a full investigation is done will it be established why this explosion happened miners.

President Xi Jinping says those responsible must be held to account.

For now though, the focus remains on the search and rescue.

Some 100 injured miners are in hospital.

Officials running the mine have reportedly been detained by the authorities.
