My sister and I have a very special bond.
7
We are twins!
8
Twins are very special.
9
But the question is, what is a twin?
10
Hi, my name is Reis Fulter.
11
And I'm Regan Fulter.
12
And our TED Talk today is about twins twins.
13
Most people think twins are just two people who look alike,
14
dress like, and pretty much do everything alike.
15
That is not the case.
16
There are many different types of twins and different personalities.
17
We have many people ask us if we're the same person,
18
and that's not true.
19
I mean, wouldn't you be annoyed if people came up to you and said,
20
hey, you two have the same face,
21
or aren't you two the same person?
22
So for all of you Are you dying to ask?
23
No. My sister and I are identical twins.
24
Identical twins are when two babies who are in the same amniotic sac and share the same DNA.
25
That's part of the reason why we look and talk the same.
26
Hey!
27
The result is for chitled twins.
28
They're in the same belly at the same time but they each have their own amniotic sac.
29
But why are we different?
30
What do you think a twin is?
31
Your DNA contains instructions for making who you are.
32
They make up your hair and eye color.
33
That's why identical twins look so much alike.
34
Reese and I have blue eyes and dirty blonde hair.
35
We have the same exact DNA,
36
but yet we aren't exactly alike.
37
If you look closely, you can see differences.
38
Reese has glasses because she was born with a lazy eye and a left eye,
39
but I don't.
40
Regan and I have the same exact DNA,
41
but yet the differences come in physical differences.
42
Here's an example.
43
When I bake an apple pie,
44
it always turns out a little different.
45
The shapes of the apple pieces are never quite the same.
46
Maybe the stove is just a little hotter,
47
or I add slightly more sugar,
48
even when it's just a little bit.
49
Each pie is still unique
50
because differences in the environment make it impossible for me to follow the instructions in exactly the same way.
51
So identical twins are kind of like two pies made from the same recipe,
52
but still turn out differently.
53
Regan and I are also a little different because I was born earlier than she was.
54
Yep, 37 minutes apart.
55
Okay, I know what you're thinking.
56
That is a really long time for twins.
57
But that is also what makes us have different bodies.
58
Regan is close to two inches smaller than I am because she was born later than I was.
59
Yeah, differences can start earlier than you might imagine.
60
This means that one twin can start getting more to eat even before they are born.
61
We are also a little different because of our personalities too.
62
I'm known as the dilly-dally-er in our family because it takes me 30 minutes to put a shirt on.
63
And Reagan is known as the stressor if she has too much on her plate or if she forgot to do something.
64
Scientists have shown that identical twins have very similar marks when they are born.
65
But as they grow older,
66
marks in their DNA become more and more different.
67
For a few years, studies have compared personalities in twins to determine when some traits are are the same,
68
like hair color.
69
So even though identical twins have the same exact DNA,
70
they're using it in different ways,
71
like all other people do.
72
So many things seem to be controlled by your DNA.
73
This means no matter how similar two people's DNA is,
74
they will always be unique.
75
Hey, that was my part!
76
Welcome to our world.
77
Thank you.
