1
150 million years ago, in the late Jurassic,
2
there was an undisputed king of Europe.
3
One of the biggest dinosaurs ever found on the continent.
4
A 35 feet tall, 45 ton giant.
5
Lusititan.
6
The challenge for the Walking with Dinosaurs team is,
7
how do you bring this gigantic herbivore to life?
8
Capturing a colossus like Lusititan requires a delicate blend of cutting-edge science,
9
creative filmmaking, and elite visual effects.
10
Oh, and a man on a beach holding a really long pole.
11
At the VFX Studio, our long extinct Lusititan is constantly evolving,
12
from initial sketches to relatively basic 3D models and into increasingly realistic moving dinosaurs.
13
But out in the field,
14
the film crew is shooting the landscapes that the digital dinosaurs will eventually inhabit.
15
They've come to this beach in Portugal,
16
following right in the footsteps of where these ancient beasts once roamed.
17
We're here today to film a sequence where two male Lucid Titans are fighting over a female.
18
Every scene has been meticulously researched and planned,
19
but on the ground, you still need a healthy dose of imagination.
20
One of the challenges is kind of making sure with an animal
21
that size that you've got enough space for it and that it's all in the frame.
22
You know, these things work as long as a swimming pool.
23
And I guess it's not a kind of animal or on a scale of anything that's alive today.
24
So it's hard to imagine how big they are.
25
So for now, our soon-to-be magnificently visualized dinosaur is just,
26
yeah, that man with the pole from earlier.
27
We work to absolute scale of what we expect the animals to be.
28
And so rather than just sort of shooting some fresh air over there,
29
even though that's the man holding a pole,
30
eventually this will be a glorious shot of a Lusititan tilting up to his face,
31
all being well.
32
As the fight reaches its climax,
33
one defeated Lusititan comes crashing down to Earth.
34
But the victorious Lusititan still has one more battle to win.
35
for the heart of his mate.
36
So he's won the fight with the male,
37
but now he's got, I guess,
38
a load more work to do because he's got to win over the female.
39
And for dinosaurs like this,
40
we think they may have engaged in a kind of mating ritual, like a dance.
41
With the real-life background footage shot,
42
it's now up to the VFX team to truly bring Lusititan to life.
43
To visualize a mating scene between two 35-foot giants,
44
the VFX artists are going to need some help.
45
Luckily, they have some inspiration from the natural world today.
46
But how would the gigantic neck of a lucititan actually move?
47
Could its neck even support the type of movement required?
48
Every single decision made by the film and VFX crew is taken only after consulting with the world's top dinosaur scientists.
49
Paleontologist Pedro Macho can prove that lucititan's neck was much lighter than you might expect.
50
And instead of solid bone,
51
lucititan could reinforce its mammoth neck with air sacs that burrowed through its neck and backbone.
52
This kind of structure allows them to support more weight,
53
be more dynamic and flexible.
54
enough to dance.
55
But what happens if the Lusititans' dancing isn't quite sealing the deal?
56
So we've got to the point now where our hero's won the fight with the male.
57
He's been kind of doing a mating dance,
58
but she's still not kind of buying it.
59
So this is where he plays his trump card.
60
And that trump card is this.
61
This bizarre spectacle may look impossible,
62
but this too takes its inspiration from dinosaurs' only living descendants,
63
who can certainly be quite flamboyant when trying to impress a mate.
64
But if nature provides the inspiration,
65
the latest science may back it up.
66
There could be direct fossil evidence for it in the skull of Lucititan's closest relative.
67
So here we have a cast of a Girafa Titan skull.
68
It supports a huge ridge of bone that may have housed a large crest
69
that some think could have flared and bulged just like the most extravagant of modern birds.
70
They may have similar functions of some of the crests that we can see in birds,
71
exhibition, or mating.
72
It's evolving here for the first time in this group of dinosaurs.
73
It's go big or go home.
74
And on this occasion, this lucid titan is not going home alone.
75
And now, after years of planning,
76
research, and filming, the very latest science and cutting-edge animation come together,
77
finally transforming and bringing these titans to life.
