Okay, welcome back to another video guys.
2
Today we have three of the most popular and famous Indonesian dishes.
3
So two meals, one dessert.
4
And we're going to be trying it using comprehensible input to describe everything.
5
But at the end we'll rate what our favorite thing was.
6
So stick around the whole video guys and let's get into it.
7
This video is also part of my 3,000 most common English word series designed to help you understand up to 95% of spoken English.

9
Sleep.
10
Savory version of classic bags.
11
Choose best to you.
12
Aftertaste skewer.
13
Marinated.
14
Last zip ties.
15
Texture of like dipping it in the sauce.
16
Burn.
17
Cutlery.
18
Let's get started.
19
Classic bags.
20
So you want to take those out.
21
Yeah, we'll save this for a little bit later.
22
That's the dessert.
23
This is the first place I've seen where they like zip tie the bags.
24
Oh, Bush country.
25
Yeah, every bag I've seen has been like zip-tied.
26
Yeah, so these are zip-ties and they are used to like tighten things up.
27
So I've never been somewhere where they use zip-ties to close the bags.
28
But in this country, Indonesia, they do.
29
Or maybe it's just in Jakarta.
30
You guys can let me know.
31
So here, I think we should start with that, I guess.
32
This is like the most famous.
33
The most well-known.
34
So it's in a paper bag.
35
But inside of this paper bag is a banana leaf.
36
And they wrap it up there just to keep it warm.
37
and nice.
38
Look at that.
39
There we go.
40
Get my 3000 most common English words PDF and learn the words that will help you understand up to 95% of everyday English.
41
It includes real definitions, real example sentences for every meaning, and everything is organized by CEFR level and topic.
42
Click the link in the description to get it.
43
Look at that.
44
This is sauté.
45
Chicken sauté.
46
Chicken sauté in peanut sauce.
47
So there is chicken here on this skewer.
48
This skewer is just a very thin piece of wood that is used to hold the meat.
49
Skewer.
50
Okay, so let's try the sauté first.
51
There's different proteins you can get.
52
What?
53
And the most popular one, which we have here, is chicken.
54
But you could also get beef and goat.
55
Some places you could even get lamb.
56
So you're not going to find pork in Indonesia or maybe in Bali.
57
They're actually Hindu in Bali, so they eat pork as well.
58
But I prefer chicken and beef over pork anyways, so this is always delicious.
59
The peanut sauce, you can get sete in other parts of the world, but the peanut sauce they have in Indonesia is the best one.
60
You can see the stick here is burned and it broke here.
61
So when I was eating it, it broke.
62
Here we have the rice cake.
63
They call us coconut rice cake.
64
They basically put it into a bamboo tube.
65
They stuff it in there.
66
I don't know if they blend the rice up first or not because it does look like it and then they cook it with a little bit of coconut milk and they serve it like that like a tube of rice, but here they cut it into little pieces for us.
67
I think they give us a cracker too.
68
This was like a combo.
69
I thought the rice cake would be chewy since when you say rice cake, I think about the Korean rice cakes.
70
Yeah, but it's more just like the exact texture of like regular rice, but in a different form.
71
It kind of just tastes like a potato, like the texture of a potato.
72
Exactly.
73
But anyways, I'm going to break this in half.
74
I just broke this in half.
75
And the way they cook satay, which makes it so delicious, is they marinate it in like a sweeter marinade.
76
And then when they cook it, they cook it really hot and fast.
77
So that's why they have the smaller pieces here.
78
and by cooking it that way, it stays juicy inside.
79
It doesn't dry out at all.
80
Yeah, so now we have the sauce here.
81
I'm taking my stick with my chicken on the end and I'm just dipping it in the sauce and turning it to get it filled with sauce.
82
They're coating it, right?
83
Yeah, I'm coating my chicken in the peanut sauce.
84
Now my chicken is coated, so I'm gonna take a bite and I'm gonna try to get all the chicken in one bite.
85
And you will see in a second here, I'm gonna bite and then turn the stick so that the chicken comes off easier.
86
Let's do that.
87
There's a lot of satay restaurants online, so you have to just pick whichever one.
88
Keep trying them until you find one you really like.
89
Yeah, I usually just choose whatever one has the highest rating and it always turns out good.
90
This next dish is served in a plastic container.
91
The lid you can see is see-through.
92
You can see through the lid and it is also taped.
93
Here you can see that there is tape holding down the lid.
94
So I'm gonna take the tape off or peel the tape off and now I'm gonna take off the lid.
95
So as I said guys, the lid is see-through and it's just a plastic lid And inside here, we have chili.
96
And they also have a lemon or a lime, sorry, that they cut in half.
97
But this lime is very small.
98
Yeah, I think they're called calamassis.
99
And it also came with rice.
100
Rice.
101
So we have rice here.
102
What else?
103
These look to be like chips.
104
Some sort of chips.
105
And in here, I guess, is the main dish.
106
The soup is inside a plastic bag, which is inside this black plastic container.
107

110
Get the workbooks in my description.
111
Yeah.
112
So this one's called Soto Betawi.
113
This soup is from Jakarta.
114
And here we have our cutlery inside this plastic bag.
115
So now I will tear it open.
116
And inside they have a spork.
117
I've never seen so many sporks in a country before.
118
But I guess sporks are very popular here in Indonesia.
119
Actually, the majority of people eat with their hands here.
120
Really?
121
Not for a soup, obviously, but...
122
So Leon is pouring the soup into the plastic bowl.
123
And it looks like there is meat in there with some vegetables.
124
Oh, beef?
125
Yeah, it's a beef soup with coconut milk.
126
And it's super popular.
127
It's really rich.
128
It's almost like a coconut curry soup.
129
This is the soup.
130
It's still warm.
131
And it comes with rice.
132
So it's slightly yellow.
133
It has a slight yellow color.
134
It's not brown.
135
But let's try it.
136
I can see a layer of oil on top of the soup.
137
You said it was coconut?
138
Coconut milk, yeah.
139
I could taste the coconut.
140
And one thing about me is I love rice.
141
You see rice?
142
I could eat just a bowl of rice.
143
Good rice?
144
Yeah, I haven't had just plain rice in a long time.
145
I like the regular rice like that more than the rice cake.
146
Because you can add more salt to that, or they add more salt to that than they do with this.
147
So this just tastes like saltless rice, which if you know, you need salt with your rice, right?
148
Yeah, and this meat looks like it has a lot of cartilage.
149
Yeah, so there's two different versions of this.
150
There's a mixed one and there's an all beef one.
151
I got the all beef one, but the mixed one comes with like organ meat and liver and lungs and stuff like that as well.
152
But we'll try this one first.
153
Yeah, let's try it.
154
This really reminds me of a Thai green curry, except this one is just like more of like a soup than a curry.
155
It's got some tomato in here as well.
156
But it's very similar.
157
They both have like that strong coconut flavor as a base.
158
And they're kind of like, I guess like yellowish green, the color.
159
They both have the same color.
160
Wow, that's good.
161
Got a lot of flavor in it.
162
Yeah, I know.
163
It actually is quite good.
164
Let's try whatever these are inside this plastic bag.
165
Okay, so you guys see that?
166
It looks like a chip, but I'm pretty sure this is not a potato.
167
I think it's a prawn cracker.
168
It looks very good.
169
It's not very colorful.
170
It's like a beige color, a little bit like a slight yellow, slight orange, and you can hear it.
171
Now let's try it.
172
I imagine it's going to crack when I bite it.
173
Try that.
174
Try that.
175
Oh.
176
It's water.
177
No.
178
The aftertaste is really weird.
179
It's fishy?
180
No, it's like bitter.
181
It's like really bitter.
182
It's not a prawn cracker.
183
I'm pretty sure it's rice based actually it is getting kind of bitter now no the the aftertaste is very bitter it's kind of like it's weird I've never had anything like that I don't think I like it I like this though it's a good soup there's also another really popular soup that's eaten as a street food it's called bakso and it's basically like a meatball soup so there's noodle in it and there's really delicious meatballs you can get large ones with filling inside of them or small ones that are just meat and they're mixed with a i think it's baking powder or baking soda that makes them really bouncy and chewy and addictive so that's a really delicious soup as well but we tried this one instead because it's uniquely from jakarta yummy in my tummy that soup is busting and i think they do like their soups a lot here in indonesia i've seen a lot of soup options as indonesian food now let's try our last item of today the dessert it is in a bright red bag and you can see through the bag it has some weight to it it is heavy i'm going to tear this bag open now because the zip tie is very tight so it cannot slide off so the name of this dessert is called Ma-ra-tabak.
184
Ma-ra-tabak.
185
It's an Arabic name.
186
This is the dessert.
187
You can get them sweet and savory, but we got a sweet one because this is our dessert.
188
This is huge, man.
189
Look at this.
190
And I think this is one of the better desserts in Southeast Asia.
191
This is massive.
192
It's like...
193
What is this?
194
It's called a pancake, but what they do is they cook it just from the bottom so the top side doesn't get cooked, and they put the filling on there.
195
In this case, we got peanut butter and chocolate, and they flip it over like half a pizza, and then they deliver it like that.
196
So the bottom and the top has a crust and the inside's nice and moist.
197
I've already rolled up this sleeve, and I'm going to roll up my right or sorry, my left sleeve as well.
198
And I'm going to grab a middle piece.
199
I'm going to grab a corner piece.
200
Wow, so there's like a lot of sauce in there.
201
It's wet.
202
Wow, yeah, my hands are going to be very sticky, but it looks amazing.
203
It looks so good.
204
Let's try it.
205
Oh my god, that's so good.
206
It's like a- I don't think the dough is 100% flour.
207
The dough has some chew to it, so it's really good.
208
It's super sweet, but I don't know- I think this oil is just the oil they used to fry it.
209
It's just a really oily dish.
210
I don't think it's a sauce they added on top.
211
But you can definitely taste the chocolate.
212
It's really sweet from chocolate and a little bit of peanuts.
213
I think they just use peanuts instead of peanut butter.
214
Oh wow, this is good.
215
It's like the best pancake you've ever had, right?
216
I'm going non-verbal.
217
It's so good.
218
I think this is one of my favorite desserts in Southeast Asia.
219
I don't think Southeast Asia does desserts that good.
220
They use a lot of fruit and milk and stuff.
221
But this right here is definitely top tier.
222
Give me 10 more leaves right now.
223
And I'm pretty sure Indonesia is one of the countries where this is the most popular.
224
I'm sure you can probably find it in other places.
225
But if you want to try the original one, then you've got to come to Indonesia and have it here.
226
Take a look at that.
227
Like, this is a heavy bite.
228
This has got to be like 200, 300 grams in this, in my hand right here, filled to the brim.
229
Yo, shout out to all Indonesians in the chat, bro.
230
Let me know if you're from Indonesia in the comments.
231
Let me know if you've had this, bro.
232
Oh.
233
Oh, my gosh.
234
This is insanely good.
235
I don't think I could eat this whole thing by myself.
236
This would kill you if you had it all.
237
How many calories do you think that is?
238
Double it.
239
Yeah.
240
And for the price, this was like 60K, 70K?
241
73.
242
And that's like what?
243
$6 or $7?
244
Five.
245
That was like six, seven.
246
Okay, guys.
247
We just got back.
248
We had a quick 30-minute intermission because I ate too much.
249
So I had to go wash my hands and just lay down on the bed I was I was out.
250
I was out of it Anyways, let's start cleaning up and we could talk about what our favorite thing was here out of all the things we eat and Whether we would eat it again or not you could start.
251
What was your favorite?
252
Thing here favorite thing and you guys answer to what looked the best to you what out of these three things would you want to try it the most?
253
And if you've tried it, what's your favorite?
254
My favorite thing has got to be the satay.
255
As good as this dessert was, I still prefer salty and that satay was just perfect.
256
Like it had a little bit of char from the grilling and the peanut sauce was just the right amount of sweetness.
257
That was delicious.
258
That was my favorite.
259
I think if I were to order it again though, I would get rice instead of the rice cake but other than that that was my favorite dish yep and for me you guys know the answer this that was amazing really this is the best thing I've had for dessert a long time but anyways we're just we're just cleaning up we have our garbage bag here and we're just putting all our garbage in here since we are done eating and I literally drank one two two bottles I drank two bottles of water and yeah overall that was really good one last question for you guys how would you describe the state of this water bottle the state of it if you're serious about becoming fluent in english i've built a full speaking and pronunciation course that shows you exactly what to do step by step you get instant access to 80 plus video lessons right away and i add three to five brand new lessons every week so you can keep improving consistently.

This water bottle is empty.
267
It's empty.
268
Why is it empty?
269
Because I drank all of the water.
270
Anyways, this is all that's left.
271
Three pieces of this thing.
272
It's been half an hour, so I could probably eat the rest of it.
273
Yeah, we Googled.
274
It wasn't oil.
275
It was butter.
276
It was butter.
277
That's why it was so moist and everything.
278
Overall, if I had to recommend anything and you have a sweet tooth, I would recommend this.
279
And if you don't like sweet stuff and you prefer something savory or salty, then I would still get that because you can get a savory version of this like meat and cheese inside of it.
280
But also the saute is very good.
281
Like you can't really go wrong with a saute.
282
It's really, really good.
283
But I mean, that soup was still delicious as well.
284
It was just the least delicious out of everything we had so far.
285
Yeah, I really did enjoy the soup.
286
I've had a lot of saute so honestly when I ate this I preferred the soup but yeah if you guys like this type of video where we try different foods from different cultures and countries then let us know and we can make more videos like these and also teach you guys English at the same time let me know in the comments if you want more videos like this and we can make more bye bye guys in this lesson I want you to shadow are in uh plastic bags so you want to take those out so These are zip ties and they are used to like tighten things up.
287
Chicken here on this skewer.
288
This skewer is just thick here, is burned, and it broke here.
289
More just like the exact texture of like regular rice, but in a different form.
290
Makes it so delicious is they marinate it in like a sweeter marinade.
291
And on the end, and I'm just dipping it in the sauce and turning it.
292
Yeah, I usually just choose whatever one has the highest rating.
293
Here we have our cutlery inside this.
294
Good rice?
295
Yeah, I haven't had just plain rice.
296
The aftertaste is really weird.
297
Let's try our last item of today.
298
I've already rolled up this sleeve, and I'm gonna roll up my...
299
What looked the best to you?
300
What out of these three things?
301
You can get a savory version of this, like meat.
