Because, spoiler warning for Spider- Far From Home, I will ruin this movie for you if you haven't already seen it.

The Spider- Far From Home post-credits scene revealed perhaps the most insane twist one could reveal.

Well, since today's X-Men movies would just suggest pretty much everyone is actually Mystique.

Nick Fury and Maria Hill throughout the events of Far From Home are actually the Skrull shapeshifters Talos

and his wife Soren from Captain Marvel.

In the scene, Talos calls Fury to report that they successfully handed off the sunglasses to Peter Parker, and despite the whole Mysterio mess, everything turned out okay.

Fury, meanwhile, hangs up on Talos, sitting on a beach, just kidding, a simulation of a beach, on a massive Skrull spaceship or space station in space.

Now, I started to try to explain this in our breakdown of both post-credits scenes.

So let's first explain the timeline here.

No, I do not think that Nick Fury has been a Skrull the whole time.

Though, I did make a pretty goddamn good case for that theory.

But no, the real Fury apparently assigned Talos to hand off Stark's sunglasses to Peter,

suggesting that real Fury must have received them after Stark's death in Avengers Endgame.

And sometime between the events of Endgame and Far From Home, did Fury swap with Talos.

But why would Fury have swapped with Talos?

Has this happened before?

Well, it appears as though that the Skrull refugees who left Earth at the end of Captain Marvel didn't stay left.

They returned at some point in the past few decades.

Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., or both could have been engaged in covert activities with these Skrull shapeshifters, and Fury just would have kept these operations a secret from us.

Really, any number of S.H.I.E.L.D agents that we've gotten to know over the years could have been Skrulls.

In the comics, the most popular storyline involving the Skrulls is the Secret Invasion series,

in which it's revealed that enemy Skrulls have secretly infiltrated the ranks of human society, including S.H.I.E.L.D and some of the Avengers.

that Marvel Studios will adapt some version of the storyline into a future film

because they've clearly laid the groundwork for Skrulls existing throughout the MCU and yeah, it's just too sexy of a movie idea to ignore.

Now, in Secret Invasion, the Skrulls are villains, not the friendly refugees who in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man Far From Home appear to be working with Nick Fury.

However, these Skrulls are also a defeated race of refugees spread out all over the galaxy

and presumably some of them may have more insidious agendas.

The way the Kree, Ronin, broke off from the other Kree to launch his own violent campaign.

So getting back to Nick Fury's mission, whatever it is, there is a good chance it's going to be connected to the ongoing conflict between the Skrull

and the Kree Empire.

Actually, if you're listening closely to the movie in the mill of Far From Home, Fury and Hill briefly discuss quote, Kree sleeper cells.

That suggests that the Kree, despite having signed a peace treaty in the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, have continued to operate covert spy groups,

Perhaps embedded on Earth, just waiting to be activated to gather espionage or maybe commit acts of terror.

Fury's mission could be to use his espionage expertise to help the Skrull invade and stay ahead of the Kree spy network.

Another clue for Fury's possible mission came up earlier in Far From Home, when Peter Parker met with Talos slash Fury and with Quentin Beck

and asked if they could ask Captain Marvel to help instead.

So why would Talos say this?

Has Captain Marvel gone missing, betrayed, or abandoned them somehow?

Perhaps Nick Fury's mission with the Skrulls is to help them find the missing Carol Danvers, their most critical ally and defender.

Another idea, the one that I'm leaning toward, is that Fury's operation with the Skrull in space could be the MCU's version of SWORD, Sentient World Observation and Response Department,

an offshoot from S.H.I.E.L.D., with SWORD focusing on extraterrestrial threats to world security.

SWORD is a relatively recent development in the Marvel comics, created by Avengers director Joss Whedon and his work with John Cassidy on their X-Men comics run.

Sword's head is special agent Abigail Brand, who commands from an orbital space station known as The Peak.

And yeah, this far-from-home post-credits scene might be giving us our first look at The Peak.

And although Fury in the comics isn't that associated with Sword or The Peak, I could totally see the MCU going in this direction.

Since, think about it, the state of S.H.I.E.L.D is a total mess following Hydra's corruption.

And if this is SWORD, or some MCU renamed adaptation of it, Nick Fury's mission could be to team up with his extraterrestrial allies, the Skrulls.

To rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D with a new focus, looking outward at future cosmic threats, whether they be Kree or the Silver Surfer in Galactus,

to carry out the legacy of Tony Stark to finally build a suit of armor around the world.
