1
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries of the 20th century,
2
the Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum Site Museum, home to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors.
3
Located about 35 kilometers east of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the burial complex of Qin Shi Huang,
4
the first emperor of a unified China.
5
Before we step inside, let me paint you a picture of the man behind this incredible monument.
6
In 221 BC, a king named Ying Zheng conquered all rival states and declared himself Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of Qin.
7
For the first time in history, China was unified under a single ruler.
8
He standardized weights, measures, currency, and even the written script.
9
He connected defensive walls that would later become the Great Wall.
10
Yet for all his achievements, he was consumed by an obsession, the fear of death and the desire to rule forever in the afterlife.
11
This brings us to what you are about to see.
12
Beginning when he ascended the throne at age 13, the emperor commissioned a vast underground army to protect him in the world beyond.
13
According to the grand historian Sima Qian, writing a century later, over 700,000 laborers worked on this mausoleum complex for nearly four decades.
14
The scale is almost incomprehensible.
15
The entire necropolis covers approximately 56 square kilometers.
16
Now, let us enter pit number one, the largest and most impressive of the three excavation pits open to the public.
17
As you walk onto the viewing platform, you will be greeted by a breathtaking sight, row upon row of life-size terracotta soldiers standing in battle formation.
18
This pit alone contains an estimated 6,000 warriors, and about 2,000 have been excavated and restored so far.
19
Look closely and you will notice something remarkable.
20
Every single face is different.
21
The artisans of the Qin dynasty sculpted each warrior with individual features.
22
Different hairstyles, different expressions, different builds.
23
Some have confident, commanding faces.
24
Others look anxious or contemplative.
25
These were not mass-produced figurines.
26
They were portraits possibly modeled after real soldiers of the Imperial Guard.
27
The warriors are arranged in a precise military formation.
28
In the Vanguard, you see three rows of unarmored infantrymen, their tunics distinguishing them as the front-line archers and crossbowmen.
29
Behind them stand the main force, armored soldiers carrying spears, halberds, and swords.
30
At the rear and on the flanks, soldiers face outward to guard against attacks from any direction.
31
In the center, you can spot the remains of wooden chariots.
32
38 war chariots once stood here, pulled by teams of four terracotta horses each.
33
Notice the height of these figures.
34
The average warrior stands about 1 meter 80 centimeters tall, taller than the average Chinese man of that era,
35
suggesting they were idealized representations of the emperor's finest troops.
36
Now, let's walk over to pit number two, which reveals the complexity of Qin military organization.
37
Here, archaeologists discovered a mixed force of cavalry, infantry, and charioteers.
38
The cavalry horses are magnificent, alert, muscular, with flared nostrils and pricked ears.
39
Each horse carries a saddle, and beside them stand mounted troopers.
40
This pit also yielded one of the most famous individual figures, the kneeling archer, found largely intact,
41
with traces of its original paint still visible when first unearthed.
42
The level of anatomical detail is astonishing.
43
You can see the tread on the sauls of his shoes, the individual plates of his armor, the tendons in his hands.
44
Pit number three is the smallest but perhaps the most significant.
45
It represents the command headquarters.
46
The figures here face one another in a ceremonial arrangement rather than a combat formation, suggesting they were high-ranking officers' deliberating strategy.
47
The layout of this pit, with its sloping entrance ramp and divided chambers, mirrors the architecture of an actual Qin Dynasty command post.
48
One of the most mind-boggling facts about this discovery is that it happened entirely by accident.
49
In March 1974, a group of local farmers were digging a well in the parched fields of Linton County.
50
They struck something hard, fragments of terracotta and bronze.
51
They reported their find to the local authorities, and what followed was one of the most significant archaeological excavations in human history.
52
Remarkably, several of those original farmers are still alive today and occasionally visit the museum to sign autographs.
53
As you explore the exhibition halls, pay attention to the bronze chariots and horses displayed in the museum building adjacent to the pits.
54
Discovered in 1980 about 20 meters west of the emperor's actual tomb mound, these two half-scale bronze chariots are masterpieces of ancient metallurgy.
55
Each consists of over 3,000 individual parts cast separately and assembled using techniques including welding, riveting, and pinning.
56
technologies we often assume are modern.
57
The level of craftsmanship is so precise that the chariot canopy, made entirely of cast bronze, is only 4 millimeters thick.
58
Now, you may wonder, what about the emperor's actual tomb?
59
The burial chamber itself lies beneath a 76-meter-tall pyramidal mound about 1.5 kilometers west of here.
60
It has never been excavated.
61
Sima Chin's ancient account describes a vast underground palace with ceilings studded with pearls and gemstones to represent the heavens,
62
and rivers of mercury flowing mechanically to represent the great rivers of China.
63
Modern scientific testing has indeed detected abnormally high levels of mercury in the soil around the mound, lending credibility to this seemingly fantastical description.
64
The Chinese government has decided not to open the tomb until preservation technology is sufficiently advanced to protect whatever treasures lie within.
65
Before we conclude our tour, I want you to imagine the original appearance of these warriors.
66
They were not the gray earthenware figures you see today.
67
Each one was painted in vivid colors.
68
Vermilion red, malachite green, azurite blue, cinnabar, charcoal black, and white lead.
69
Their skin was flesh-toned, their armor lacquered brown, their sashes and robes in rich hues.
70
When exposed to the dry air of Xi'an after being buried for over 2,000 years, the lacquer underlying the paint dried and curled within minutes,
71
taking the colors with it.
72
This has been one of the great challenges of preservation, and scientists continue to develop new techniques to save the remaining pigments on newly excavated figures.
73
The terracotta warriors represent more than just a burial custom.
74
They embody the ambition, the artistry, and the organizational genius of the Qin Empire.
75
They tell us about military science, about craftsmanship, about beliefs concerning life and death in ancient China.
76
They remind us that 300 years before the Roman Empire reached its height,
77
China already possessed the administrative capacity to mobilize vast resources for a single, awe-inspiring project.
78
Thank you for joining me on this journey through ancient Chinese history.
79
As you continue to explore the museum at your own pace, take a moment to stand quietly before these silent sentinels.
80
They have stood guard over their emperor for more than two millennia, and in doing so, they have given us an unparalleled window into one of the world's greatest civilizations.
81
Enjoy your visit, and may the spirit of the First Emperor's Army leave you with memories that last a lifetime.
