It's amazing!

I'm at Pininfarina, the world's most famous coach builder and design house.

This is where they've shaped the Ferraris you love for decades.

And this is the most advanced wind tunnel in the world.

Okay, now come over here.

I want to show you something.

This right here is one of Pininfarina's most famous creations.

This is the one-of-one 1989 Ferrari mythos.

It's based on a Testarossa, but it's wider, shorter, and lower than the Testarossa.

Here are your headlights.

There's no air intakes on the front here, as you can see.

There are no windshield wipers here.

It has a wraparound cockpit and these racing seat belts and down there has a five-gear gated shifter.

You have this massive air intake here for this flat 12 engine that produces about 400 horsepower.

Look at that spoiler flowing into a single strip of light, pure Pininfarina.

Why Pininfarina is such a famous coach builder is

because in the 1950s Enzo Ferrari and Pininfarina worked very closely together

and Enzo built engines and focused mainly on power and Pininfarina, he made sexy designs and together they made these kind of creations.

A few other models include the 512 S Speciale, the Testarossa and the Ferrari Sergio.

But this is what they built for themselves.

This is the Sintesi, Pininfarina's shooting brake concept that was unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

The way the doors open on this car is insanely unique, check it out.

The doors on this car are one of its most striking features, using a traditional scissor mechanism pivoting upward and forward.

The Sintesi reimagined automotive architecture by moving away from a traditional engine-centered design.

Let me show you the front here.

It has this light bar.

This car explored hydrogen fuel cells, four motors, one at each wheel, no central engine, so they could design a cabin and body unlike anything else.

Now that we've seen these amazing cars, let's step inside the place that does the hard science behind that beautiful styling.

This is the most advanced wind tunnel in the world.

Check out that turbine.

It features 29 shorter blades, backed by 13 supplementary fans,

all working together to blast 250 kilometer per hour winds.

But crucially, they do this without drowning out the car itself.

Because this facility doesn't just measure how a car moves through the air, it measures how a car sounds doing it.

That's what that massive web of microphones overhead is for, capturing every single noise the wind creates.

So these are the control panels for the wind tunnel.

You have your cameras right there, big red emergency button.

Now let's set the speed up high and let me show you how to do that.

So you click here.

Let's crank it up to 140.

Ready?

Now here you'll see the speed.

You can really start to hear it.

We're only at 140 kilometers an hour, but it can go up to 250 kilometers an hour.

You can already see the walls and the materials moving, the cables moving in the corner.

The floor rotates the vehicle so engineers can test it at different aerodynamic angles.

This looks like a giant needle but it's actually a probe with 14 holes, seven on each side and it measures the pressure and the velocity of the airflow.

Check this out.

So they insert the measurements of the car into the system that way this probe does not scratch the car itself.

I've never seen anything like this.

So here I have the probe that helps you visualize the airflow with the smoke.

I call this the smoke stick.

Okay, turn the wind turbine on.

So I'm trying to show you here with this probe how the aerodynamics work.

So here through this intake it comes right out of the hood.

Across the roof the smoke stays tight to the body.

That's the sign of a car that's slicing through air, not pushing it.

See how the wing goes around this headlight here? So cool.

Right into the mirror.

Now go check out the rear spoiler and see how this affects the aerodynamics.

At the back, the smoke rises over the wing.

That's downforce, pushing the car into the ground at speed.

But every line of smoke you're seeing, that was perfect wind.

Real roads aren't.

Crosswinds.

Chaos.

So how do you test for that?

Come check this out.

This is the turbulence generation system.

Really looks like something out of a Star Wars movie.

All right, let's turn it on. So cool.

This system helps determine the drag from either another car ahead or atmospheric circumstances.

So for instance, if a wind gust comes, this is something that would simulate that to test the drag.

Three meters tall.

The rotating pillars break up the clean airflow, recreating real road chaos.

Now I'm going to test this wind tunnel on my cell.

Humans should not be in here, but I have exclusive access and I get to experience this today.

Oh, God.

Woo!

That's amazing.

I can almost lean.

It's so cool.

This is 50 kilometers per hour.

I don't think anyone's gotten to experience anything like this.
