Mai shows her friend Lila around a Vietnamese market, and Lila learns why Vietnam is called the heaven of food.
Mai and her friend Lila walk through a market in Hanoi. The market is bright with red tomatoes, yellow bananas, and green herbs. The air smells like hot pans and sweet mangoes. 'Vietnam is the heaven of food,' Mai says. 'Wait—you'll see.'
They stop at a small stall. An old woman gives them bowls of pho. The soup is hot, with thin beef, white noodles, and green onions. Lila sips the broth. 'Mmm, this is warm and good!' she says. The woman adds mint and lime. 'Fresh things make it better,' she smiles. Lila takes a big bite. Her eyes open wide. 'Yes! This is magic.'
Next, they go to a bread cart. A man cuts a crispy baguette. He puts in grilled pork, pickled carrots, and a slice of chili. 'Banh mi,' Mai says. Lila takes a bite. The bread crunches. The pork is sweet. 'I can't stop!' she laughs. The man gives her a small piece of coconut candy. It melts on her tongue—sweet and cool.
By afternoon, Lila's stomach is full. She looks at Mai. 'Now I know,' she says. 'Vietnam is the heaven of food. Every bite makes me happy.' Mai grins. 'Told you,' she says. They walk home, holding a bag of soft mangoes. The market still smells like herbs and joy.
