Lately and in the past few years as well I've been paying closer attention to the subtle signs
2
and inner nudges maybe gut feelings tension I'm carrying things
3
that drain me or inspire me and slowly
4
that awareness became action today I'm sharing some of the simple daily health habits
5
that have reshaped how I live
6
and more importantly how I feel this is a work in progress for me
7
but something that I've been striving to do is challenging myself to just get started,
8
to take a tiny step toward something that matters to me, a goal, a change I want to make,
9
something that I've been meaning to do that I keep putting off, even just like a simple task, even if it feels like I'm not fully ready.
10
Even just a tiny bit is sometimes all I need to give me a little pep in my step
11
and build that momentum.
12
There's this trap that we fall into where we wait for the perfect time to begin.
13
Monday, next month, when life settles down, when we feel motivated.
14
But the truth is that that perfect moment is really hard to come by.
15
And what I've learned is that today is just as good a day as any day, usually.
16
Probably better because today is real and it's here.
17
We're in it.
18
Now, I definitely, I don't do this perfectly.
19
I definitely do not.
20
I still procrastinate.
21
I still overthink.
22
I still put things off until another day or I'll start tomorrow, but I'm so much better at asking myself whenever I feel overwhelmed or stuck,
23
what is the smallest possible step that I can take today?
24
Whenever I stop waiting and start starting, suddenly that goal doesn't feel so far away anymore.
25
Several months ago, I started doing some exercises at home that specifically I enjoyed
26
doing no strict approach
27
or forcing myself to move in a certain way just simply listening to what felt good for my body and letting
28
that be my guide what i did actually was i made
29
a list of some of my favorite body weight exercises just on a piece of paper um like ones
30
that actually felt good and
31
that i i actually kind of enjoyed doing like even like basic squats
32
and i just i just did those i just did those ones
33
and it made getting motivated to move my body
34
so much easier we also recently just got some dumbbells
35
and I actually like like physically I like the feeling of lifting weights
36
and strength training I actually it feels good and being aware of
37
that makes it so much easier for me to choose those types of exercises
38
that I like I also discovered qigong actually about six months ago
39
and I loved it so much it's a very slow-paced mindful
40
but strengthening way to move and kind of connect with your body
41
but then i stopped exercising over the winter we got sick
42
so much and i just felt really out of sorts
43
and out of a good rhythm
44
but i started to feel this restlessness in my body come springtime
45
and by starting small and focusing on ways
46
that i enjoyed moving whether it's at home workouts
47
or getting out for a long walk or hike
48
or dancing around my living room and getting some of
49
that restless energy out it really helped me to to reestablish those good habits again. so so
50
getting back into a healthy rhythm has been expressed in more ways than just fitness for me recently
51
but also my more introspective and even spiritual side
52
which has always ebbed and flowed for me over the years i'm not religious
53
but one habit i come back to again and again is is simply spending time with nature and taking a few moments, even brief, to be still.
54
And I'm just talking like approachable, everyday stillness that anyone can access, whether it's being out in my garden, which I love doing.
55
It's one of my favorite places to be.
56
Or just sitting and looking up at the trees, watching the trees move.
57
It's not a formal meditation.
58
It's more of an opportunity for some quiet contemplation
59
and just noticing what's right in front of me
60
and it just helps my mind to slow down in a way that feels small but powerful, you know?
61
This is my view out our back door here and I absolutely love just sitting here and looking out at the garden, looking out at all the trees back here,
62
all of the trees around our house
63
and on our street is one of the things that drew me to this house when we were looking at moving here.
64
And it's just, it's so peaceful and it's so grounding
65
and I sometimes will just spend several minutes just sitting here and just looking up at the trees, looking outside. so I
66
have always been sensitive to caffeine,
67
which is why I don't drink coffee.
68
Makes me way too anxious and jittery.
69
But I do love tea, including black tea, which is caffeinated.
70
In recent months, I was finding that I was drinking too much tea, too much caffeinated tea.
71
I just was having more days where I was feeling, you know, a little worked up clearly because of the caffeine
72
that I was consuming or having trouble sleeping because I was drinking it too late in the day.
73
And I started to incorporate and enjoy more caffeine-free teas.
74
I mean, I have so many different kinds of herbal teas, but I really started to just explore some new ones
75
and have fun with that and include those in my day more than, you know, constantly having caffeine.
76
And And it's been really helpful to like respect my nervous system a little bit.
77
I'm really enjoying vanilla rooibos tea lately.
78
I also found a maple rooibos, which is really nice.
79
I love teas that I can enjoy with milk, like a creamy, rich, frothy tea.
80
Let me know in the comments below if you're a tea drinker and what your favorite teas are.
81
Just like how nature and moments of stillness help me to feel more grounded, journaling is another version of that.
82
It's how I check in, especially when I'm moving through change or messy feelings or even the good stuff.
83
But it's one of the few habits that really helps me to stay honest with where I'm at.
84
I've journaled my whole life ever since I was a little kid.
85
Sometimes more, sometimes less.
86
It definitely took a bit of a back burner once I became a mom, I will say.
87
But recently I've gotten into a groove with it again.
88
And sometimes it's stream of consciousness writing.
89
Sometimes it's responding to a prompt or even just like a brain dump,
90
but most of the time it's a diary style writing where I can just work through what's on my mind.
91
And it's a practice that's very near and dear to me.
92
It's quite cathartic for me when I need it the most.
93
Something that has helped make healthy eating easier for me over the years has been repeating meals.
94
Not necessarily eating the exact same thing every single day,
95
but we rotate them kind of using a category framework to make meal planning and cooking easier.
96
So for example, we always do some kind of pasta during the week, some kind of stir fry, usually something Mexican, kind of like that.
97
And it just takes the pressure off.
98
It saves time.
99
I kind of already have an idea of types of meals
100
that I can write in my meal plan when I'm doing that each week.
101
And it helps me to actually follow through with eating and cooking nourishing food a a lot easier.
102
I used to micromanage every bite,
103
obsessing over clean eating and strict rules and tying my worth to what I ate.
104
And a few years ago, I dropped all of that.
105
And I started exploring things like intuitive eating and evidence-based nutrition,
106
turning nearly everything I once believed about food upside down and completely shifting my relationship with food.
107
I stopped overthinking every single ingredient and I started focusing on how I feel
108
and what my body wants and needs
109
and this shift toward more food freedom changed everything for me including something that I didn't expect.
110
I got so much mental space back.
111
I started to be able to focus on so many other things
112
that life has to offer besides the lectin content of beans or whether or not this cupcake is dairy-free,
113
like all these things that I just spent so much time thinking about but also stressing about.
114
And this is a habit that I practice every day, eating in a way that feels like I am in control of the choices that I'm making,
115
not all of these fear-based rules that dictated my every move in the past.
116
Choosing what to eat based on how I feel.
117
I mean, all kinds of things.
118
You know, my hunger, my cravings,
119
my wants, my needs, as well as tools that help me make cooking easier for me.
120
Even though I don't fixate on ultra clean ingredients all the time like I used to, I still very much care about nutrition,
121
but a less neurotic way, I guess, that I create more balanced meals and it's become pretty second nature for me, whether it's breakfast or lunch or dinner or a snack,
122
or I want potato chips or chocolate is asking myself, hey, what can pair this with to make it more balanced
123
or more satiating or more satisfying with the categories of a balanced plate in mind
124
so carbs non starchy carbs protein fat some flavor too
125
so sometimes that's choosing to pair chocolate with a handful of nuts
126
or adding extra protein to a sandwich or to a smoothie
127
or adding in some extra fiber with mixed veggies or berries or chia seeds into a meal or snack that I'm making.
128
And this makes healthy eating feel so much more sustainable
129
and also so much less restrictive because it's no longer about what I can and cannot eat or should or shouldn't eat,
130
but about letting all foods fit, all the foods that I enjoy fit in my life while also still nourishing myself as well.
131
I want to end off this video by talking about the simple yet very powerful habit of consistency.
132
That's right.
133
There you go.
134
I said it.
135
There are so many examples in my life where I have simply been consistent and many, many examples where I have not.
136
Don't worry.
137
Maybe the action isn't always executed perfectly or with enthusiasm or ease at all times, but it's consistent.
138
I showed up, i did it again and again and
139
that act alone cultivated something meaningful and successful whether it's the meal planning
140
that i do each week or cooking most of our dinners at home breastfeeding my daughter
141
or building my youtube channel from the ground up
142
so many years ago or even something as simple as taking my iron supplements
143
which let me tell you let me tell Hell yeah, it has changed my, I feel like a new person since correcting my iron deficiency.
144
And again, it's not about doing it flawlessly, just doing it enough.
145
And it's also not always about willpower,
146
but the little systems and routines that support you and can help you to carry out an action,
147
even when you're tired or busy or not in the mood for it.
148
Now, again, I am not perfectly consistent with everything.
149
There are definitely habits that I've totally dropped or routines
150
that just went out the window or something I was super into for like three days and never touched again.
151
So it's not about being a robot.
152
It's just about coming back to the things that matter the most to you and showing up for those over time.
153
And even if you did totally drop something that you started, guess what?
154
Today is just as good a day as any other day.
155
Thanks so much for watching guys.
156
I hope that there was at least one little helpful nugget for you in here.
157
These are all things that have absolutely been huge for me in my life.
158

159
