1
Hey everybody!
2
Welcome to this B2 English listening practice video.
3
You can use this video to practice your listening and comprehension as I speak.
4
You ready?
5
So today, I'm going to teach you some more idioms in English.
6
In the last B2 video, we went over some common ones, so let's look at a handful of others today.
7
I'll start us off with a really useful one.
8
A blessing in disguise.
9
I'm actually not quite sure if this idiom exists in a lot of other languages or not, but we use it a lot in English.
10
A blessing in disguise is something that doesn't seem good at first, but over time you realize that it was actually a good thing, a blessing.
11
For example, if I get laid off for my job, and then a couple weeks later I find my dream job and get hired, I could say, getting laid off was actually a blessing in disguise.
12
It seemed bad at first, but it allowed me to find my dream job, so it turned out great.
13
Alright, the next idiom that we're going to look at is weather the storm.
14
In this expression, the word weather is actually a verb.
15
When you weather the storm, you go through and get through a hard time.
16
You can use this in any situation where you want to say
17
that you deal with a lot of difficulty in the moment to eventually get through it and have a better situation afterwards.
18
For example, I could say, we went through a really rocky time in our relationship, but thankfully we were able to weather the storm.
19
This means that we went through difficulties, but we didn't quit.
20
So we made it through the hard time.
21
Alright, our next idiom is the last straw.
22
Here's another one that's used all the time.
23
When something is the last straw, it means that it's the last thing that you'll endure.
24
You won't put up with it anymore.
25
For example, I could say, When my boss yelled at me in front of everybody for something that I didn't even do, that was the last straw.
26
I quit right then and there.
27
In this case, I'm saying that I couldn't handle my boss or my work anymore.
28
After that instance, it was too much and I quit.
29
Here's another example.
30
This is the last straw.
31
I'm breaking up with her.
32
In this example, I'm saying that whatever it was
33
that my girlfriend just did was the last thing that I'm going to put up with.
34
I can't take it anymore, so I'm going to break up with her.
35
Okay, the next idiom is the elephant in the room.
36
If I had to guess, I'd say that this idiom might not exist in a similar form in other languages.
37
The meaning of this expression is that there's some topic on everybody's mind, but everybody wants to avoid it.
38
So, if I just had a messy breakup with my girlfriend, and now I'm at a party with a bunch of people that know all about what happened, they might be afraid to mention this issue.
39
My breakup would be considered the elephant in the room.
40
Here's another example.
41
We had all heard about the recent drama, but nobody wanted to address the elephant in the room.
42
Alright, here's our last idiom for today.
43
Cut corners.
44
When someone cuts corners, it means that they try to complete some task in the quickest, easiest, cheapest way in order to save time, energy, or money.
45
They're not interested in doing a good, thorough job.
46
They just want it done fast and easily.
47
For example, I could say, if you want to be successful here, you can't cut corners.
48
This job requires a lot of time, energy, and patience.
49
Okay, that's all for today.
50
Leave a comment and try to use one of these idioms in your own sentence.
51
I'll see you next time.
