1
How do you train your brain and your mouth to be able to think and speak faster?
2
You see, if your brain takes longer to process thoughts,
3
it can be harder for you to formulate your responses in real time,
4
causing you to speak slower.
5
This can be really frustrating when you're trying to keep up with others.
6
The exercises
7
that I'm going to share with you in this video have not only helped me achieve faster rates of speech
8
and for me to be able to process my thoughts quicker,
9
but it's also helped thousands of my students transform their ability to think and speak faster while maintaining clarity.
10
The first one we'll address is Vin,
11
how do I speak faster?
12
To speak faster, I've got three thoughts on this.
13
The first thing is you've got to improve the mechanics.
14
You've got to improve the hardware.
15
You've got to improve your ability to speak faster,
16
which means that you need to be able to learn tongue twisters and you need to be able to do tongue twisters.
17
Tongue twisters are beautiful because they help improve your articulation
18
and as you improve your articulation you'll be able to speak faster
19
because you'll start to develop the muscle strength in your lips,
20
in your tongue,
21
you'll start to learn the efficient movements you need to make within your mouth to be able to speak more quickly.
22
And the way you do this is go to Google or chat GPT,
23
whatever you like, find the top 50 tongue twisters.
24
And then what you want to do is read one tongue twister five times.
25
Okay.
26
So you don't just read one tongue twister once.
27
You read it five times,
28
but each time you read it in the five times,
29
you get faster and faster and faster and faster.
30
And again, what you're training yourself to do there is not just to speak more quickly without clarity.
31
Tongue twisters are built in a way where it kind of trips you up, right?
32
So if you try to read it too quickly before you have good articulation,
33
you just go and you won't be able to read it.
34
And again, what that does is it enhances your articulation ability while you're building the ability to speak faster.
35
What does that mean?
36
It means that that means you now can speak more quickly while still having complete clarity.
37
And you'll notice this in some people,
38
myself as an example, I now can speak pretty quickly with great articulation.
39
And as a result of me being able to do that,
40
even though I speak quickly,
41
you can still understand me perfectly fine.
42
Whereas for a lot of people,
43
when they speak really quickly,
44
all of a sudden now,
45
you can't understand what they're saying.
46
Right?
47
And again, that's an over-exaggerated example of what happens to people,
48
but basically that's what happens.
49
And then it just sounds like they're mumbling.
50
Not throwing shade at mumble rap,
51
but there are times when I listen to mumble rap and I go,
52
I have no idea what that person's saying.
53
Don't get me wrong, the mumble rap is,
54
it's catchy, but I'm just saying,
55
what the f*** are you saying?
56
Pet, pet, pet, kip, tip, p- Lifestyle.
57
Just f***ing mumbled him and said one word.
58
And again, it's because the articulation in those moments, it's really poor.
59
Now, the second thing that I would recommend is I'd recommend you looking for a 300 word story.
60
Okay, so look for a 300 word story,
61
grab the 300 word story,
62
start reading it and stop at the one minute mark.
63
All right, so you just get a timer.
64
You've got the timer, you press start on the timer and then you just read the story.
65
And then once it gets to one minute, stop.
66
And then mark in the story where you've stopped and now count how many words you were able to read.
67
Now, once you've done this,
68
you will essentially get your average rate of speech per minute.
69
So the first time you read it,
70
you go, oh, well, I got to about 100 words per minute.
71
Cool.
72
Great.
73
No worries.
74
That's okay.
75
That's just where you currently are.
76
Now the next time you do this,
77
I want you to start adding an extra 10 words to that average speaking rate.
78
So you wanna get to 110 words.
79
So read a little bit faster.
80
And then the next time you do it,
81
start your timer and then now read with a little bit more speed.
82
And then you'll do it and you go,
83
oh wow, I got to 120 words per minute, great.
84
And then the next time you do it again,
85
try to get to 140 words, 150 words, 160 words.
86
And this is how you can intentionally practice rate of speech.
87
And you can literally measure your progress.
88
And if you find yourself,
89
oh, I'm still struggling, I can't get past 120 words,
90
then now I want you to sit and reflect.
91
What's stopping you from being able to do that?
92
And you might find that,
93
oh, I find that my mouth can't keep up.
94
Okay, back to the tongue twister activities.
95
So start with that.
96
That's the second activity I want you to try.
97
Now, the third thing is breath control.
98
The most common problem is when you have poor breath control,
99
the key area that people suffer in that causes them to speak more slowly,
100
it's that they're expelling too much breath per word.
101
So if I'm too breathy when I speak,
102
it forces me to slow down because I have to take more breaths when I speak, right?
103
And I'll give you an example.
104
If I'm using lots of breath per word,
105
I can go, hi, everyone.
106
I just want to be able to share with you a few thoughts that I have.
107
Notice how I'm very breathy.
108
You want to control the amount of breath that's escaping your mouth.
109
And psychologically, you want to think to yourself,
110
I want to let the breath ease out of me,
111
not just be pushed out of me.
112
I want to be able to control the breath that comes out.
113
here's the cool thing that happens because if I take a deep breath now
114
if I really control the amount of breath that's coming out
115
and I support each word with just the right amount of breath
116
that comes out of my mouth I'm able to speak for
117
an extended period of time without taking a breath like I
118
can just for an example keep going with this this is just one breath
119
that I've just taken before
120
and I can still go with this breath that's you being
121
efficient with your best breath control one of the things you should practice
122
if you want to get really good that breath control is just taking a deep breath and making an S sound.
123
So you take a deep breath,
124
you make an S sound until you run out of air and you go like this.
125
and you go for as long as you possibly can.
126
That's mimicking good breath support.
127
That's mimicking also the right amount of air you want to expel while you're speaking.
128
And you want to start to develop that sensitivity to,
129
all right, so that's the amount of air I want to be expelling.
130
Not, hi, everyone, great to see you.
131
And then you're out already, right?
132
Because you're pushing the air out.
133
The more advanced one I want to add on here for
134
you as well is you can also practice counting in the same way.
135
1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
136
6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
137
11, 12, 13, 14, 15,
138
16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21.
139
Notice what I'm doing here.
140
I'm giving every single number the exact amount of breath.
141
And I'm energizing every single number that I count with the exact amount of energy.
142
Whereas the biggest mistake that most people make is,
143
this is what they do.
144
They start really breathy.
145
And then after that, they're trying to continue to count or speak.
146
And then they start to strain their voice.
147
1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
148
6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
149
11, 12, 13, 14, 15.
150
And then all of a sudden you get that croaky voice at the end of it.
151
It's called vocal fry.
152
Now, if you notice it again,
153
it's invisible until you see it.
154
But now that you see it, you can't unsee it.
155
But the thing that Vin does really well is I energize every single word in the sentence,
156
including the last.
157
And as you practice this as well,
158
it allows you to speak more quickly,
159
but do so in a way that's influential and engaging.
160
Hey, I hope you're enjoying the video so far.
161
And I just want to say that if you're watching the video up until this point,
162
it seems as if you've developed a little bit of an itch
163
and you may want to take your communication skills to the next level.
164
And if you do, I run free communication masterclasses for two hours
165
where you can join me for free and learn in a structured way.

168
Anyway, back to the video.
169
Moving to the second part of the question,
170
and it's how can I think more quickly?
171
Now, this is a loaded one too,
172
because there are so many different ways in which you can think more quickly,
173
but I'll give you my top three thoughts.
174
The first overall thought that I want to share with you is this.
175
Seek to understand, not memorize your area of expertise.
176
For a lot of you,
177
you're in a professional setting and you're going,
178
sometimes it takes me a long time to formulate my answer.
179
And then all of a sudden,
180
it seems like I don't know what I'm talking about.
181
Ah, damn, it makes me decrease my credibility and I feel lame.
182
And this is a question people often ask me,
183
how can I think quicker on this particular area?
184
Often it's from people who are fairly new to an area of expertise.
185
They're fairly new to a job.
186
They're fairly new to this career.
187
They're new to an industry.
188
When you fully understand something,
189
you're not having to go,
190
wait, what was the answer for this again?
191
Wait, you don't have to go into that part of your brain where it's memory retrieval, right?
192
If you want to become quicker at being able to answer people,
193
you need a deeper understanding of that topic.
194
You can achieve that by get three books on that topic.
195
Go deeper.
196
If you are in real estate and you are a realtor,
197
maybe you should go grab five books understand more about developments if that's the area you specialize in real estate.
198
Get really good with what the council rules are,
199
what the county rules are,
200
tax benefits of being able to do X versus Y versus Z,
201
understanding how to work with banks,
202
how to work with builders,
203
how to work with contractors.
204
Again, just really download all that information,
205
get really good understanding and depth on it.
206
Then once you've got that,
207
then the second thing you need to learn is frameworks.
208
frameworks on how to communicate your area of expertise,
209
frameworks on how to communicate complex things.
210
And the most important framework you can learn is the 3-2-1 framework.
211
The 3-2-1 framework is very simply three steps,
212
two types, the one thing.
213
So when someone asks you a question,
214
think in that framework, you could either pick,
215
there are three steps to whatever you just asked me,
216
there are two types of whatever you just asked me,
217
or the one thing about what you just asked me is.
218
I'll give you an example.
219
This happens to me often because people sometimes will see me in public
220
and they do know who I am and they go,
221
oh, Vin, great to see you.
222
Oh my goodness.
223
And I always love these interactions.
224
They're beautiful.
225
And then people always ask me a question, a loaded question.
226
They go, Vin, what should I do with my communication skills?
227
What should I do to improve my communication skills?
228
And that's a loaded question because there are so many things you can do to improve your communication skills,
229
but they're just asking me,
230
what should I do then to be able to improve the way I communicate?
231
And then I've got the framework, right?
232
I've got, there are three steps to improving your communication skills.
233
There are two types, two ways to be able to improve your communication skills or the one thing, right?
234
So in that particular example,
235
I just would immediately go to the one thing.
236
Because instead of my brain going,
237
oh my God, there's so many things you can do to improve.
238
What do I do?
239
Do I talk about breath work?
240
Do I now talk about articulation and the importance of that?
241
Do I talk about tonality?
242
Do I talk about vocal archetypes?
243
Do I talk about storytelling?
244
Do I talk about body language?
245
Do I talk about active?
246
Your brain's going to go crazy.
247
So even though I have depth of knowledge,
248
if I don't have this framework,
249
my brain will just melt down.
250
So instead of allowing the brain to go through a meltdown,
251
I just pick one of the three in that framework.
252
So again, I'm just going to pick the one thing.
253
So I'd say to that person,
254
hey, the one thing you should focus on as you begin your journey is self-awareness.
255
You need to be able to become more aware of what your non-functional behaviors are.
256
So all I would get you to do is record a video of yourself and watch yourself back.
257
Start there.
258
I was able to answer that question in a moment with depth
259
and clarity and also in a way that is simple and coherent.
260
And then if the person wants more,
261
they can ask follow-up questions.
262
Whereas a lot of the times experts feel they have to give the other person everything.
263
No, because if you gave them everything, you overwhelm them.
264
No, no, no. The goal is to be able to use the 3-2-1 framework to answer the question.
265
And often you go with the one thing because that's very powerful.
266
And then if they want more, they'll ask for it.
267
And then the final thing I would say that's going to be able to help you think faster
268
is reduce the levels of anxiety and stress.
269
Because when you are anxious and you're stressed,
270
it impairs your ability to think clearly.
271
And if you know you're going to be going into a situation that's going to cause you to be stressed
272
and also going to cause you to feel lots of anxiety,
273
then make sure you prepare.
274
Make sure before you go into it,
275
part of the prep work is breathing.
276
And I know every time I say this,
277
people go, oh my God,
278
breathing, breathing is so lame.
279
No, you're alive because of breathing.
280
There are workshops that I've done that's taken four,
281
five days, seven days, and it's just purely on breathing.
282
And the first thing that I wanna make you aware of is diaphragmatic breathing.
283
If you don't know how to take a diaphragmatic breath,
284
I highly encourage you to go look up on YouTube, diaphragmatic breathing.
285
There are countless videos out there that teach you how to take a belly breath instead of taking a chest breathing,
286
instead of doing chest breathing,
287
instead of shallow breathing, like that.
288
You take deep breaths into your belly.
289
Back to what I was saying though,
290
if you know you're going into a situation that's going to cause you to be anxious,
291
here's what you do.
292
Do box breathing.
293
Box breathing is this beautiful breathing technique that Navy SEALs came up with.
294
And box breathing is essentially you fully release all the air.
295
Then after that, you breathe in for four counts.
296
You hold for four counts.
297
You breathe out for four counts,
298
you hold for four counts.
299
That's one cycle.
300
Do three to five cycles of that.
301
This decreases your level of anxiety,
302
which allows you to have a clearer mind,
303
which then enables faster thinking.
