1
Today we're going to look at the hot topic all about the environment and climate.
2
This topic is incredibly essential and is a hot topic at the moment.
3
Now I want to set a little bit of a challenge in this video.
4
In my first answer I'm going to make a really common mistake that students make.
5
Let me know in the comments if you can spot it.
6
Question number one.
7
Do you like to recycle?
8
Well, when I was younger,
9
I always recycled my waste because my school encouraged us to do that.
10
I can vividly remember my teacher always shouting at us if we threw our rubbish.
11
But nowadays, due to the hectic work environment,
12
I find it easier just to throw my rubbish in the bin.
13
In the future, I will try to correct this.
14
Number two.
15
Is pollution a problem where you live?
16
Well, I must confess, Ho Chi Minh City is not famous for its trash collecting services.
17
However, on my particular street, it's absolutely beautiful.
18
Trash isn't really a big problem here because the community likes to pick up their rubbish and throw it in the bin.
19
Something that makes me feel really proud.
20
Number three.
21
Do you prefer living in the city or the countryside?
22
Well, to be honest, I'm a big fan of residing in urban areas,
23
not only because of the world-class education system,
24
but also because of the prestigious job opportunities,
25
which is important because people can earn a high salary and have a better quality of life.
26
Number four.
27
What is your favourite season of the year?
28
Well, I am a big fan of winter because during winter we can celebrate Christmas,
29
my favorite festival.
30
For example,
31
last winter I traveled to the majestic mountains of Dalat in
32
order to enjoy the breathtaking views as well as the cold and wintry weather.
33
This was a really special memory for me.
34
So guys, did you notice the little mistake in my answer to the first question?
35
Yes, exactly.
36
Be careful when using the past tense,
37
when using the structure, in the past but now.
38
In the past I always recycled my waste because my school encouraged us to do that.
39
So be careful with the past tense there.
40
Those kind of grammar mistakes examiners are really listening for.
41
I will say though that my pronunciation was pretty good.
42
Be careful with those final sounds.
43
Always, always, sometimes.
44
Adverbs of frequency are a really good way to increase your IELTS score.
45
All the way from always,
46
occasionally, Sometimes, hardly ever, and never.
47
You can use these in your answers to sound more natural.
48
Moreover, did you notice about the power of examples?
49
I can vividly remember when I was younger.
50
For example, last Christmas I travelled back to the.. and then told a story.
51
I would encourage you in part one to give personal examples.
52
Examiners really like this.
53
Now let's move on to part two.
54
Describe a place with clean air or natural beauty you've visited.
55
You should say where it is,
56
who you went with, what you did there,
57
and explain why you liked it.
58
Well, there are many gorgeous locations I could talk about.
59
However, if I had to pick one,
60
it would be the majestic mountains of Halon Bay.
61
I chose Halon Bay because it has sentimental value to me.
62
When I was younger, I can vividly remember I travelled to Halon Bay with the person I loved most in the world.
63
We enjoyed a cruise around the stunning islands,
64
I can vividly remember we watched the sexy sunset.
65
In that moment I was captured and in awe of the beauty of the islands and felt mesmerized.
66
So let me tell you a little bit more about Halong Bay.
67
It is located in the northeast of Vietnam,
68
about two hours from Hanoi.
69
Halong Bay is famously a UNESCO wonder of the world with incredible breathtaking views.
70
You can't help but be caught up in the beauty of the place.
71
In my opinion, Halong Bay is special,
72
not only because of its historical significance,
73
but also because it is a landmark for Vietnam.
74
When many people think about this stunning country,
75
they instantly think about Hà NẬ Bà.
76
It's a unique feature and asset to Vietnam.
77
In the future I will make it my ambition
78
and dream to return back to Halong Bay and take photographs of the stunning islands to upload on Facebook.
79
Do you see in that answer guys I'm just telling one long story using our technique 2
80
which will be linked down in the description below.
81
Being able to speak with intonation,
82
passion and creativity will always come if you tell a story.
83
For me Halambe has so many special memories so it's easy for me to talk about that location.
84
Notice I didn't really follow the four points,
85
the what, the who, the where, the when.
86
I did not really follow those.
87
I just focused on the main question and told a story around that.
88
I would encourage you to do this as well
89
because it's a great way to show the examiner your ability and your level of English.
90
Moving on now, let's talk about part three.
91
Question one.
92
What are the biggest environmental problems in your country?
93
Well, in my opinion, I think it depends on location.
94
In rural areas, The biggest challenge are the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers,
95
which leads to many of the little animals suffering and sadly passing away,
96
causes a loss of biodiversity.
97
In contrast, in urban areas,
98
the biggest issue has to be noise pollution.
99
Many of the neighbors
100
in Ho Chi Minh City can be heard singing at the top of their voices
101
which can negatively impact a lot of the local people.
102
In the future I hope the government will solve these problems.
103
Number two, what can individuals do to help?
104
In my opinion I think it comes down to education.
105
Teaching people about the importance of protecting mother nature will help them to understand the mistakes they are making.
106
For example, in Vietnam, the majority of people are unaware of the damage that overusing pesticides can do to the environment.
107
However, I think we should also understand that due to the fact that Vietnam is a developing country,
108
not many people put recycling waste at the top of their agenda.
109
Number three.
110
Do you think cars should be banned from city centres?
111
Well, this is a great question.
112
Absolutely, I think yes, because this will help to reduce pollution
113
and as a result people will have better mental and physical health.
114
For example, in Ho Chi Minh City,
115
if we banned lots of cars,
116
this would lead to less pollution in the air.
117
On the other hand, I think a better option would be to create a congestion zone,
118
much like in London, where vehicles have to pay a small fee to enter the city centre,
119
which will encourage people to use public transport.
120
For me, I think this is the secret to success.
121
And finally, number four, Should governments or individuals take more responsibility?
122
Well, some people think it's the job of governments to encourage their citizens to behave in a way
123
that is favourable to the environment,
124
because the government earns money and is there to look after all of the citizens.
125
But I think it fundamentally comes down to educating people.
126
Ultimately the responsibility comes from encouraging our neighbors
127
and friends to act in a way that helps to save and protect mother nature.
128
If everyone recycled more, pollution would decrease.
129
So guys, I hope you enjoyed listening to that.
130
You notice in that part three I not only used a wide range of vocabulary
131
but also my intonation and fluency was really on point.
132
The topic of the environment is a really hot topic and examiners love it if you can speak fluently about this.
133
One thing I would do is to encourage you to talk a little bit about culture in your answers as well.
134
You notice I mentioned about Ho Chi Minh City,
135
about London, I gave examples in my answer,
136
talked about the difference in cultures.
137
I'm interested if you think a congestion charge would work in Ho Chi Minh City?
138
Perhaps not.
139
As always guys,
140
please let me know in the comments down below what topic you would like me to cover in the next video.
