1
Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode.
2
In today's video I will be walking around the block and describing things that I see in English.
3
Today I am using a different camera and I've notice that this camera has more exposure.
4
Exposure means that the brightness on the video is pretty washed out so the colors look a bit lighter.
5
Everything is kind of blending together.
6
So I'm excited to see how this comes out on the big screen.
7
When I say big screen,
8
means a big television and nowadays I feel like all of the TVs are pretty big
9
and they are also a flat TV most of the time I remember
10
when I was a kid we had those bigger television sets
11
I think we called them tube TVs where they were big and heavy,
12
bulky, there was no remote and you had to turn the dial in order to change the channels.
13
Nowadays all of the TVs seem to be flat screen TVs
14
which is pretty convenient when you want to move houses or apartments.
15
They are lighter, they fit in storage units better
16
and most of the televisions come with a remote control
17
so you grab the remote and you can click the buttons
18
so you click the buttons you can turn it on turn
19
it off change the channel you can turn down the volume
20
which is the sound and you can even turn a timer in case you fall asleep while you're watching television.
21
Anyways back to the neighborhood.
22
This neighborhood is a historic neighborhood so most of the houses look different.
23
They are older houses all built maybe in 1950 1960 and
24
And we even have a lot of this brick around in this neighborhood,
25
which gives it a medieval kind of style to it, which is pretty fun.
26
Another thing that I like about this neighborhood is all of this greenery.
27
so this color is green and we call these bushes
28
or trees and right now it is pretty lush
29
so lush means a lot of it in an abundance
30
but yeah for example look at this house behind me kind of an older style a historic style Okay,
31
let's continue on our walk.
32
Right now it is the morning time.
33
So it is around 10 a.m in the morning.
34
And I enjoy walks at this time because the weather is a little cooler.
35
After noon, so afternoon, it gets pretty hot in this neighborhood.
36
The sun comes out, the temperatures start to rise,
37
and right now during the summer it can get up to about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
38
I'm not sure what that is in Celsius,
39
so if anybody can convert that into Celsius that would be fun to see that.
40
But yeah just got underneath some shade
41
so this tree above me kind of gives me some shade some cover from the sun
42
and cools me off from the hot temperatures.
43
I am crossing the street
44
and I'm about to walk on the sidewalk
45
so this area in front of me is called the sidewalk
46
so again another really cute historic house
47
and it looks like this one is for sale
48
so this is called a sign and the sign is held up by a post.
49
This house is for sale which means someone is trying to sell it
50
and move out to either another house or another location.
51
The car is passing us in the distance and it is stopping at the stop sign.
52
Also, I want to use this time to say thank you for being a part of this community.
53
For the last 16 years, I have had the opportunity to work as a tour guide around the world.
54
I was fortunate to work in Alaska,
55
where it's really cold, down in Australia as a tour guide as well.
56
And I also had the opportunity to work in Mexico on a catamaran sailboat.
57
During those times, I really enjoyed listening and learning different languages.
58
So in the last couple years, I decided that I really wanted to teach English.
59
and I finally started doing it.
60
So thank you all for really supporting this channel and learning English with me.
61
And I am excited to see where this goes and what everybody learns in the future.
62
So thank you so much.
63
So this part of the neighborhood, I will switch the screen around, is our little square.
64
So in other countries a square is probably a little bit more formal.
65
It has more historic buildings.
66
Possibly a government building.
67
But this is what we call a little square in our neighborhood.
68
One thing that we have in Texas are big trucks and they are loud.
69
So if you ever come to Texas, get ready to see big trucks.
70
So this is our little square.
71
This store sells candy.
72
This is a bakery which sells pastries and coffee.
73
On the other side of the street we have a grocery store.
74
Out in the distance, I'm not sure if you can see, but we have a gas station.
75
And maybe I'll walk over there to kind of show you the gas station and the pump.
76
In one of my past videos, I had a lot of comments asking why we call petrol gas.
77
petrol is also known as gasoline
78
but here in the United States we like to shorten words
79
so we shortened that word gasoline to the word gas now
80
when we're talking about other gases like propane gas etc we
81
usually say the whole chemical name for example can I get a tank of propane gas now
82
when we go to the gas station where they sell petrol we say I need to get some gasoline
83
or I need to get some gas
84
so behind me we have a really fun mural some artwork and this neighborhood is pretty artsy
85
So when I say artsy, that means a lot of people enjoy art.
86
We have artwork, murals, graffiti all over the place on walls,
87
inside restaurants, and just in random places.
88
So it kind of makes this little neighborhood colorful.
89
So colorful means a lot of colors.
90
For example, look behind me.
91
This is a mural just on someone's fence.
92
All the way down the fence there is artwork.
93
So pretty amazing, huh?
94
And that's what kind of gives this neighborhood some color.
95
Okay, let's continue.
96
I would say about five more minutes of this.
97
So if you can hang in there, learn a little bit more English, and yeah go on your day because I know
98
that you're busy in this world where there's so much stuff going on
99
so many things going on time is really precious to us
100
so precious means it is really rare it means a lot to us
101
so the time is really important to us because we only get
102
so much time in a day
103
but yeah in a world where you know we have to work
104
and maybe go to the gym stay healthy visit family time is really important
105
so I know you don't have tons of time
106
so I will only continue for another four or five minutes just
107
so that you can get your daily dose of English
108
and then yeah you can continue on your day so I kind of saw something kind of interesting
109
This is called a fence.
110
So this fence surrounds the house.
111
And over here we have another style fence,
112
which also encloses the house.
113
So, fences, that's plural, that means more than one fence.
114
Fences can be different types of material.
115
They can be wood, just like this one.
116
This one's a wooden fence made out of wood.
117
And that one that I showed you before was almost like an aluminum or steel.
118
So definitely a harder material.
119
This might be kind of fun to see.
120
So this sign here says, dead in.
121
So the word dead, you know, that translates to somebody who has passed away or is not alive anymore.
122
But when we say dead in on a traffic sign, we mean that there's no exit on this street.
123
So when you get to the end of this street, you'll have to turn around.
124
So there's no exit from this street.
125
We call it a dead end.
126
This is what I was kind of saying earlier lot of this neighborhood has this stone wall
127
which gives it a really historic feeling
128
and behind this wall you could essentially call this a fence
129
but behind this wall is a castle this castle is now
130
a museum about 30 years ago someone lived in this castle
131
but it has been donated to the city
132
and it's now a museum this sign in front of me says Elizabeth Ney Museum
133
and it has been donated to Austin
134
so at the very bottom of this sign says Austin it has been donated to the city All righty,
135
I'll show you one last thing about this neighborhood and then I'll let you go But these neighborhoods we have
136
Free libraries so it's not a building but this like this little makeshift
137
box and you can open the door and inside of this box are free books.
138
Now what we have to kind of do is when we take a book, we replace it with one of our own books.
139
So we donate one of our own books and then we exchange it for another book.
140
And that's how the community gets to read all these free books.
141
So pretty cool.
142
all right I think I'm going to end this video off here thank you guys
143
so much for coming out and I'll see you on the next episode bye everyone yeah
144
Hey, new beginnings on the cusp Not too old to adjust Old dog,
145
new tricks Remember I was just a pup Something dirty in my cup Clean soul, good karma
