1
Hello and my name is James.
2
Welcome to Easy English with James.
3
And today I want to talk to you a little bit about pronunciation.
4
Now, pronunciation is one of the things that most people find most difficult when studying English.
5
Everyone wants to sound like a native speaker.
6
And there are some hiccups, some problems along the way.
7
There are some sounds that most people find very difficult and today we're going to look at them sounds.
8
Our first sound today is the th sound.
9
Now this sound can be split into two different types.
10
The first is a voiced sound.
11
This is the sound that you hear when people say words like the or those, these.
12
And it's caused by vibrating your tongue.
13
If you imagine a mobile phone, when it's ringing it vibrates.
14
If you put your tongue out of your mouth just in between your teeth
15
and you vibrate your tongue as you make the sound th, th, th.
16
This is the sound that you want to make when you produce the th voiced sound.
17
This, that, these, those, them and their.
18
The other th sound is a voiceless sound.
19
This is what we say when you hear words like theatre,
20
theatre or thank you or Thursday
21
or even the popular superhero character Thor okay this sound is
22
a little bit different what we do is we do the
23
same thing we put the tongue out of the mouth
24
but this time we blow air in between the tongue and the top of our mouth like this
25
okay so every time somebody says thank you
26
or Thursday what they're doing is blowing
27
that air out of their mouth this is one of the most important sounds
28
and if you get this right I promise you people will think
29
that your ability to to pronounce English is really on quite
30
a high level the next sound actually this is more like two sounds
31
but they're often confused with each other the first is the CH sound as as in chat
32
or chips or change and the second is the sh sound as in shoot or ship or shine
33
now the mouth is in the same position okay like so sh but for the sh sound that's this one
34
The SH sound we control it by continually making the sound for a little bit longer.
35
Like so.
36
The CH sound right here we make by making a strong blast of sound.
37
Like so.
38
CH CH CH.
39
You might have heard a common tongue twister with this one.
40
For the SH sound we have tongue twisters like she sells sea shells by the seashore.
41
For the CH you might have a tongue twister like how much wood could a woodchuck chuck
42
if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
43
Practice both of these and
44
if you can master these two sounds again it will really help you to produce a natural sounding voice
45
when you're speaking and communicating in English.
46
The next two sounds.
47
Very very similar problem.
48
We have the P sound as in pot or pig
49
or pepper and the bee sound as in baby bad bigger these two sounds also can be called voiced
50
and unvoiced or voiceless
51
and a lot of people have problems with these two sounds
52
it's quite hard for a non-native native speaker to hear the difference.
53
But it's very important to know the difference between the two.
54
The first sound, our p sound, comes from down in your belly
55
and it's produced by blasting air out of the mouth as you put your mouth into this position.
56
Pot, pig, pepper, police
57
but the b sound there is none of this blasting feeling
58
for the b sound it's simply a vibration somewhere down here again like
59
so big better bellow bad and you can hear the difference between
60
that sound okay if you practice these two sounds you'll find
61
that your ability to hear the difference when people are speaking to you improves as you practice.
62
So it's a good idea to repeat these sounds as often as possible.

Kontext & Hintergrund

  • Thank you - Ein häufiger Ausdruck der Dankbarkeit.
  • This - Ein Demonstrativpronomen zur Anzeige von Nähe.
  • Thursday - Der Name eines Wochentags, oft in Gesprächen verwendet.
  • She sells sea shells by the seashore - Ein Zungenbrecher für das „sh“-Geräusch.
  • How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? - Ein Zungenbrecher zur Übung des „ch“-Lauts.

Schritt-für-Schritt Shadowing-Leitfaden

  4. Zungenbrecher nutzen: Üben Sie Zungenbrecher wie „she sells sea shells“ oder „how much wood...“, um Ihre Fähigkeiten in der Aussprache weiter zu festigen.
