1
Above the Arctic Circle lies a remote archipelago which is quickly becoming one of Europe's most unlikely summer destinations.
2
Powder white sand beaches, endless hikes through lush green landscapes and a sun that doesn't set.
3
But is a summer holiday here actually possible?
4
Or are these islands far more extreme than we're led to believe?
5
This is Lofoten and we set out to explore everything these islands offer, from wild camping to the most beautiful hikes, to experiencing local culture.
6
But as we would quickly find out, things here rarely go to plan.
7
Guys, we have a problem.
8
We completely underestimated the weather here in the Arctic Circle.
9
I feel like an idiot.
10
We're in the Arctic Circle, I don't have any hat or gloves.
11
Joel was like, oh no, I won't need a coat.
12
I'm like, bruh, you need a coat, but...
13
Oh.
14
We did not realise it would be this bad, that we kind of don't really know what to do with ourselves
15
because all the heights are supposed to be so slippery and muddy.
16
So we're just going to give one a go and see how far we get.
17
Do we need those as well?
18
I'm just panicking, all right?
19
We've got a coat and raincoat.
20
You just never know what can happen.
21
I've actually got two pairs of trousers on.
22
Oh, blimey.
23
Is that overkill?
24
No, never overkill in the Arctic Circle.
25
I just only found that out five minutes ago.
26
The end of the rainbow up there is actually where we're going.
27
Hopefully that means a positive sign.
28
Oh, no, it's raining.
29
Oh, no. It was sunny literally a minute ago.
30
I'm so confused.
31
So the weather said today that it was going to be sunny all day.
32
Now this is La Fota for you.
33
Please give me some sun.
34
Good job.
35
We cannot keep track of this weather.
36
As soon as that rain stopped, the sun came out and now it's really hot.
37
Look at all the laser medias now holding.
38
I had to take my second pair of trousers off.
39
Wow.
40
Now we have reached the top, we have the capital of Lofoten in front of us.
41
This is Svolver and this is like the main hub of this whole archipelago.
42
But as we head further west, apparently the views, the hikes, everything just gets so much bigger and better.
43
It's gonna get 10 times more beautiful I think.
44
But we could also get a lot more rain, but that just adds to the fun of it.
45
The weather hadn't exactly given us the best start, but that afternoon Lofoten was about to show us a completely different side.
46
The weather apps here don't seem very helpful, they don't seem to know what the weather is doing, so we've kind of taken it upon ourselves to try and find the sun.
47
Now we're gonna try and head to the west coast of the island
48
because we think that there could be some sun that way, but I actually have no idea it is definitely getting brighter now
49
if we look in this direction not if we look over there um
50
but we're going to be heading to one of the best beaches
51
or best known beaches in the whole area
52
so i'm quite looking forward to this
53
because even though we are in the arctic circle don't count the beaches out wow hawkland beach oh my goodness
54
that literally looks like i don't know the moldings with with a mountain.
55
I actually kind of want to swim.
56
I just haven't got out the car in quite a long time so it feels warm even though it's definitely not.
57
How is that for a beach?
58
That is incredible.
59
They've got a beach volleyball net.
60
What is that doing?
61
There's literally like surfboards lined up.
62
This is a proper beach.
63
This is our first Arctic beach and it's absolutely beautiful.
64
The colour of This sand is so white.
65
It is.
66
It's almost blinding.
67
I need my sunglasses.
68
It's almost like snow.
69
This is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen.
70
With the dramatic cliffs, people side, this is exactly what I picture of the photo of the beaches.
71
It's also probably the coldest we've ever been on a beach as well.
72
Apart from in Iceland.
73
Welcome to winter in Iceland.
74
That was actually colder to be fair.
75
At least the sun is out and we're not in a blizzard.
76
I don't know if you can see, but there's a few people in the water swimming we have our swimwear on.
77
I feel like they're way braver than ours.
78
That is impressive.
79
I'm not sure about going in there.
80
We could dip our toes in and then that could be enough. Does that count?
81
Does that count?
82
Please let that count.
83
Probably not.
84
There's literally all along the beach there's jellyfish.
85
Oh wow.
86
And I saw a really big one.
87
Do you remember when we saw them in Scotland last year?
88
Yeah, I wondered if they're like the same type or something because not too far from North of Scotland.
89
That's huge.
90
You almost can't see it because it camouflages so well into the sand.
91
This is actually blowing my mind.
92
Like look at this beach.
93
It feels like we're in the Caribbean or somewhere like blimey Norway.
94
You are beautiful.
95
Now I feel like swimming.
96
You feel like having a any time the sun comes out I'm like wow
97
that is proper aqua blue water do it Emilia here we come here we come
98
You've done it!
99
Right now I feel completely numb.
100
High five.
101
We've seen so many people swimming in Lofoten, especially online before you come, But this has just been like 20 minutes where the sun's out and we're like, let's just swim.
102
That's the thing you have to remember on Instagram, that not everything is as perfect as it first seems on those 15 seconds.
103
Whereas hopefully we're giving you more true idea of what it's actually like here in Lofoten, because obviously we've had a lot of rain.
104
We thought before we went in that we'd have to run back to the car, didn't we?
105
We thought we'd have to warm up really, really fast or we'd get frostbite.
106
But turns out I almost have frostbite.
107
But only in your fingers, the rest of you is alright isn't it?
108
But if you know me this is completely normal.
109
You have Raynoids so just white fingers all the time.
110
It is such a weird thing being on a beautiful sunny beach, being fully dressed in layers of coats
111
and then also having bare sandy feet this is the furthest north i've ever been
112
and we're just swimming on a beach might be the furthest
113
north we ever go the true north pole do you think
114
that could be that could be a great youtube video who wants to see
115
that i think i've fallen in love with this beach i
116
really do i think the clouds disappearing really helped us maybe i just love sun
117
maybe that's it we were not going in there
118
but how invigorating like just a rush of adrenaline it gives you
119
when you go in
120
that water we have a problem guys now the weather is too good like it looks
121
so blue and whenever it's blue
122
when whenever the weather is good you have to take advantage every local every guidebook tells you this
123
because you never know when the weather can switch but
124
that means we won't know where to stay tonight
125
because you normally have to book into the campsites before 6 p.m
126
and it's only it's 5 p.m already so either we book into a campsite
127
and then risk the weather for the rest of the week
128
or we take advantage of this weather
129
and then maybe you don't have anywhere to come tonight even
130
though we have no idea where we're staying tonight we're We're just gonna cook some food on this beautiful beach.
131
We grab the stuff from the car, and I don't see anything better right now than eating, because I'm starving.
132
This is a five-star restaurant view, look at that.
133
Look at that for a view.
134
Just don't think about the five-star hotel tonight, which we don't have.
135
Is that worrying?
136
Are we gonna be okay?
137
If in doubt, we can just sleep here on the beach on our sleeping bags.
138
I don't think you're allowed to.
139
Actually, you're not allowed.
140
Yeah.
141
Oh well.
142
Oh, it got a bit of sand in it, one second.
143
So for dinner we've just got lentils and rice with a pasta sauce.
144
Can't wait, this is gourmet five-star meal, here we come.
145
Basic but easy when you're camping.
146
Yeah.
147
I think we're good to serve up.
148
The rice is, we've got boil in the bag rice
149
because it's a bit easier to cook but it looks kind of strange.
150
Presentation is on point.
151
Look at that.
152
Cheers.
153
I tell you, when you've had a big day in Lofoten, you get hungry.
154
Rice and lentils hits a spot.
155
We had hoped the weather would hold off for us to do a late night hike in the evening sun
156
but Lofoten had a different idea
157
and as heavy winds rolled in we began scanning the island for a suitable wild camp spot for the night.
158
We found a slightly protected camping spot after a lot of searching.
159
We had to move beaches to avoid the wind so hopefully this tent is going to hold up.
160
It's definitely more grey than earlier though.
161
Not looking as friendly conditions.
162
Oh my word, it looks like it's raining over there.
163
I think we need to set this up quick.
164
Quick.
165
Oh no. Time and wind were against us as we rushed to put up this tent before the rain.
166
But clearly we're not exactly expert campers.
167
No. No. No. Amelia.
168
What?
169
Why is the wind coming from that way?
170
We've built our tent.
171
Let's just hope this wind doesn't pick up too much because as you saw, there was this huge gust and we don't want that to happen during the night.
172
Also, the sand's quite soft, so the pegs are kind of lightly in, let's just say.
173
Yeah, like you can get them out easily so let's hope they don't come out in the night.
174
The wind gusts are getting big but I've got rocks to save the day or the night.
175
Actually it's still the day because the sun just doesn't set here.
176
And don't make fun of how badly put up this tent is
177
but if we put the rock over all the pegs hopefully we won't go anywhere in the night
178
because I feel like we might
179
if we don't put rocks here how's it going doesn't look
180
great does it all right i can start to feel the rain coming in now hopefully fingers crossed
181
that keeps us asleep tonight coming in wow blimey we've really
182
made ourselves feel at home in here yes uh don't look can you hear the rain it suddenly got really
183
really heavy because I could see it coming over the mountain.
184
Should we just go in the car?
185
We could sleep in the car.
186
It is still raining and there's still quite a lot of wind.
187
What is the time?
188
I get so confused with the time here.
189
It is 11, nearly 11 o'clock at night and it is still so bright.
190
It's so hard to actually see.
191
I have a secret weapon to sleep in the midnight sun.
192
It is really, really, really thick eye mask.
193
It's basically a duvet for your eyes, but it blocks every bit of light out.
194
Ready?
195
So Amelia sleeps like this, and I just sleep with my eyes open.
196
You just raw dog it.
197
But this is the only way you can literally sleep.
198
It's because your body doesn't release the hormones that make you tired, because it doesn't see the darkness.
199
Alright that's the end of the science section with Amelia today.
200
Goodnight.
201
Goodnight.
202
Good morning guys.
203
After a pretty rough night, I think maybe 3 or 4am, the rain and the wind kind of died down a little bit
204
because it was ferocious and the tent has lasted to the morning
205
and now it's beautiful blue sky but we couldn't enjoy the blue sky for long
206
so press the toyota button but i didn't think it was a button
207
we have bad news our electric car for some reason does not seem to be working
208
and we cannot for the for the life of us to figure out why.
209
There's also no internet where we camped.
210
So Joel is currently searching for internet.
211
It says that it can't detect the key, even though the key is here and working.
212
So it's some kind of electrical fault.
213
And I don't really know how long this is gonna take or whether we will be able to fix it.
214
I'm now wondering whether an electric car was the right move
215
for a remote island chain in the arctic it's definitely malfunctioning
216
we've managed to call a tow truck up the hill
217
and it's going to take an hour and a half for him to get here
218
it's working it's working now it's on as soon
219
as a small trouble battery can connect the hybrid battery then the hybrid battery is charging yes
220
if it's on okay you can use all the power inside
221
yeah yeah that's on the treasles we did it the car is fixed
222
that was way quicker than we thought it would be although it did take an hour
223
and a half for the guy to reach us
224
because we were in such a remote location and there was no internet
225
but thankfully it was just a small fix we made it we're back on the road silly 12 volt batteries
226
so basically the 12 volt battery in our car had gone flat apparently quite common in this model of car
227
and even though the rental company didn't charge us anything for this fault, we wouldn't recommend hiring the Toyota BZ4X.
228
The weather has taken a turn for the worst.
229
It is so rainy, you almost can't see some of the mountains.
230
So we're going to do one of the only activities you can actually do here in the rain.
231
If you know anything about Norwegian or Scandinavian culture, you might understand why we have flip-flops on right now.
232
In here, we have our very own sauna.
233
We have one of the best views from a sauna in Norway.
234
Saunas in Norway date back to the Vikings and have continuously served as vital multifunctional spaces for survival, hygiene and community in this harsh climate.
235
We are sweating so much but the big thing here in Norway,
236
traditional, is to alternate between the sauna and then like an ice plunge or swimming in the ocean.
237
Oh my gosh it's so cold and windy!
238
The one thing we do have to be careful of is avoid poisonous jellyfish, the lion's mane jellyfish.
239
Well that's scary.
240
It is frightening because it's raining right now.
241
Oh guys
242
now we're at the sauna it is a lot colder outside.
243
I honestly didn't feel
244
that cold once I got out of the water I was like I feel comfortable
245
but when you first leave the sauna it's actually scary how cold it is what an experience to do
246
that on a rainy cloudy horrible day
247
which you're gonna get even in the summer here in Lofoten definitely recommend it I've forgotten what this is called
248
but we'll put it down in maybe this corner it cost us 30 pounds each and
249
which actually is a really good price not too bad for
250
like such a beautiful location we've come into the town of Reyn
251
but But we've actually been calling it rain which is quite typical for today because it's boring with rain.
252
But this is a very beautiful little fishing village
253
and we're hoping to try and get some good coffee because what else are we going to do in this weather?
254
You can literally see over there in the distance three waterfalls have appeared that were not there the other day.
255
We have just got nice warm coffees.
256
This is a double flat white and Joel's got the cute little portado.
257
and this is a cinnamon bun they are literally the best
258
this particular cafe is supposed to have some of the best on the island
259
this coffee is so good they do do coffee very well here in norway it's also collected here
260
because it is so rain outside Keep going!
261
Ryan is a tiny fishing village squeezed between jagged mountains and fjords, with traditional red fisherman's cabins lining the water.
262
For centuries, life here revolved around cod fishing, but today it's become one of Norway's most photographed villages and from almost every angle it's easy to see why.
263
We have just seen jellyfish off this bridge and this is the water, this is the same bay we were swimming in just 200 metres that way earlier.
264
So I'm glad we didn't run into any of those.
265
I wonder if those are the dangerous ones.
266
I think they're called lion's mane but I keep getting confused because that's also the name of the mushroom.
267
It was looking like the weather might finally improve that afternoon
268
so we went to a popular lunch spot whilst we waited for the sun.
269
You'll never guess that there is an oven baked pizza place here and it actually looks, it insane wow that is incredible this place is
270
so cute as well we've got like little fluffy wall seating the view is amazing it's very vibey
271
but the pizza is so exciting
272
that is an unbelievable pizza we've both gone for the diavolo pizza
273
but mine is without cheese because i hate cheese
274
which everyone says is weird
275
but i don't think it's weird i'm just gonna get this one to go
276
because it looks like the real deal here we're not talking about any old pizza this looks like That's a good smell.
277
Honestly one of the best beaches I've ever had I swear.
278
I'm just really hungry.
279
So because the rain's gonna hold off for a few hours, we are starting the right hand hike, which looks over Calviki Beach.
280
I think we'll go down to the beach as well if we get a chance.
281
But this is one of the most popular heights on the island and it's supposed to be very beautiful.
282
Though it is busy.
283
And in the distance down there, that little farmhouse is where we just had the pizza.
284
Not a bad place to start the hike.
285
Uh oh.
286
It looks rainy.
287
We've seen a storm cloud.
288
Oh, are you swollen my hair?
289
Sorry about that, yeah.
290
We've seen a storm...
291
Not good.
292
I wouldn't recommend eating Amelia's hair.
293
It's looking a bit cloudy, a bit stormy over there.
294
It looks like Scotland.
295
Yeah.
296
Compliment though, just means it is rainy.
297
This is a ridiculously muddy hike.
298
There is so much mud, probably because of all the rain, but also the amount of people who actually do this hike because the views are supposed to be that good.
299
Just makes it so muddy.
300
Even though it's July right now and it's supposed to be the least rainy part of the year.
301
On the weather app it says sun and cloud and we've just felt the rain.
302
You just can't predict the weather here.
303
It's impossible.
304
Don't even try.
305
Don't trust it if you're coming to Lofoten.
306
Okay you'll just get disappointed.
307
We have just come over the hill and this is the view of the beach.
308
Just a thought.
309
I have to say, guys, this path is excellent.
310
It's the best path in Lofoten.
311
It really is.
312
I don't know if you guys watched the last video in Lofoten that we did, but it was so muddy and so bad.
313
So to have these steps is an absolute luxury.
314
Living the good life here out on these stone steps.
315
Also, look at the waterfalls.
316
Our luck has come at last.
317
I see blue sky and we have seen very little blue sky on this trip.
318
Get in there.
319
We deserve it.
320
Finally.
321
One thing we didn't show is
322
that actually we had a whole day full of rain here
323
so we weren't able to do anything so that kind of bummed us out but blue skies ahead.
324
You can kind of see here it looks like they've actually been making this path like very recently
325
because they've still got like equipment there and it does look very new
326
so I think we're quite lucky yeah apparently on the all
327
trails reviews it was saying people were having to scramble up this
328
but now it's like a perfect path I didn't realize it
329
was gonna be a black sand beach it's kind of like a mix of normal sand
330
and black sand but I don't know maybe it's from all these dark rocks we've got.
331
Here comes the sun.
332
That is incredible.
333
These literal rock faces, these mountains in front of us are huge straight down into the sea. That is so impressive.
334
I don't know if you can really tell the scale from the camera, but these cliffs are absolutely huge.
335
It's literally like Scotland, but on steroids.
336
Yeah, actually I can see people right at the top.
337
I try and get a little video of it But they are so small up there.
338
Do you know what that means?
339
What?
340
That means We actually have to climb back all the way we came
341
and further So we've just by coming to the beach made it a lot longer and harder for ourselves.
342
Oh, yeah That's where that's like the best viewpoint in all of Lofoten which we have to get up to
343
We shouldn't have come down first.
344
We should have gone up.
345
The sun is here The sun will come out
346
today right now we made it oh my gosh i saw a jellyfish what this is like a jellyfish all broken up
347
sun as we made it to the beach we obviously need to have the magic potion which gets amelia
348
through all the hikes we do you can't be sad on a rainy hike when you've got
349
It's a little bit of chocolate.
350
Mmm.
351
Norwegians are doing it well, are they?
352
Mmm.
353
But now we have to climb all the way to the top.
354
I'm not going to lie, that's quite intimidating.
355
But it's going to be worth it.
356
I just know it.
357
Let's begin the hike up.
358
Have you seen that grey clap behind us?
359
It's not looking good.
360
That's not looking good.
361
That really doesn't look good.
362
Do we continue?
363
We've climbed up over 300 meters now.
364
We must be able to see, look down the beach soonish.
365
And I feel like we really are in a race against time with this big grey cloud coming up.
366
I'll tell you what, despite of being very busy on this hike, we managed to find a different path to everyone else, which has actually been nicer with better views, and there's no one else on it.
367
So you don't have to go far to avoid the crowds.
368
just choose the different path hey look at the beach we
369
were just on we're all the way down there you see
370
that little black dot that's a person we're beginning to get views not only of the beautiful beach down there
371
but also all the way across Lofoten islands so
372
that the other side is like right the other side of
373
the archipelago like it's crazy how high up we are i think we're about about 400 meters up now.
374
So nearing the top.
375
Lay us back on as you get an icy breeze up here.
376
I feel like a drone.
377
You feel like a drone?
378
Yeah, I'm literally like on top of the beach, like looking down right on the beach.
379
You're flying.
380
We were there like maybe 45 minutes ago.
381
This is epic.
382
This is insane.
383
Why is no one at this bit?
384
Oh my gosh, this is amazing.
385
I feel like we have front row seats to like a new movie because everyone's out there on top.
386
Maybe they've got a higher view, but we've got a view just for ourselves.
387
Yeah.
388
It's like a private screening.
389

The thing I love about this island is that you get 360 degree views everywhere.
391
So even though the beach looks amazing this way, you also have a lake over here, which looks really cool, massive cliffs, and the open sea.
392
So no matter which direction you look, it's pretty awesome.
393
And of course, lovely Joel over there.
394
That is a long way down when you come up.
395
That's a lot of climbing.
396
That is a lot of climbing.
397
You've done really well.
398
Wow.
399
Oh, we're basically at the top.
400
Look at the view, not even just down the beach, but all around here.
401
Crazy.
402
Definitely a lot busier up here.
403
But still worth it.
404
Definitely.
405
The views are insane, aren't they?
406
This hike had shown us exactly why people travel to Lofoten, with some of the most spectacular views in Europe.
407
And although you could say Lofoten is by no means the perfect summer destination, and very little of our trip had gone to plan, these islands had completely won us over.
408
And we both said we'd love to return one day, especially with some sun.
409
So whilst this isn't for everyone, if you're looking for a genuinely wild adventure, then this is the place for you.
410
I thought you were gonna fall.

  • "It feels like we're in the Caribbean...": "It feels like" hilft, Bilder zu malen. Perfekt für Vergleiche: "Das Wetter fühlt sich an, wie im Winter – obwohl es Juli ist!"
  • "Don't even try.
