1
I went from being homeless to a monk to a CEO.
2
And these five methods helped me progress faster, be insanely successful, and outperform everyone around me.
3
And these will drastically change your life.
4
Number one, the most important skill you'll ever learn is knowing when to quit.
5
You know, we've all had that job that drags us down or that relationship that feels like a burden.
6
For me, it was when I was running the marketing team at a company years ago
7
and I reported directly to the CEO, an amazing leader, a coach.
8
We would roll up our sleeves, spend hours and hours trying to work through problems together, thinking together.
9
He would challenge me.
10
He would make me better.
11
And then, of course, the company grew to thousands of employees, and the CEO had to hire a chief operating officer.
12
And from day one, it was clear that the chief operating officer was not interested in me, or in my input, or in my growth.
13
He brought his right-hand person, slowly started stripping away more and more from my plate and transferred it to the guy that he had brought in.
14
He would constantly question my decisions and undermine me in public.
15
You know, I started second-guessing myself, second-guessing everything.
16
Hated coming to work, constantly watching my back.
17
The culture was slowly turning toxic and the worst part, I started losing interest in what I was doing.
18
There was no passion left.
19
That's when I made the best decision.
20
In order to accelerate my growth, I quit.
21
I found another company that was a better fit in terms of culture and career.
22
You know, my personal growth just skyrocketed after that.
23
And here's the kicker.
24
You know, that favorite CEO of mine, he eventually fired that COO.
25
But if I had stayed, I would have wasted years in a place that was crushing my energy, my creativity, my self-worth.
26
We all have to learn to quit faster.
27
This takes a lot of courage.
28
I understand that.
29
But the faster you quit what's not working, the faster you double down on what is working.
30
Here's a good framework to try.
31
I call it the quit quotient.
32
Analyze your current situation, not just for work, for relationships, for projects, even habits, and give yourself a score on three dimensions,
33
Each on a scale of 1 to 10 maybe.
34
First dimension, drive.
35
Does this work inspire me or drain me?
36
This is the personal dimension.
37
Second, fit.
38
Is this the environment where I can actually compound?
39
Am I with people who push me to learn and grow?
40
Are they investing in me?
41
This is the cultural fit dimension.
42
And the third one, growth.
43
What new doors will open for me here or later if I stay?
44
This is that professional dimension.
45
Now, add all three numbers.
46
If your total score is greater than 24, you're in the green zone.
47
This is your 10x fit, double down.
48
16 to 23, yellow zone, the fit is unclear.
49
Give it maybe three to six more months.
50
Test again, adapt, rescore, see where you land.
51
If your score is 15 or less, red zone.
52
Wrong fit, quit fast, as fast as you can.
53
Because this is how compounding works.
54
How and where we invest our time now will have dramatic effects years later.
55
The idea behind your quit quotient is simple.
56
If it doesn't fit, just quit.
57
Number two, the most important thing to progress faster than anyone isn't talent or strategy, it's your intrinsic motivation, your inner why.
58
Great athletes know this, the secret of fast progress, purpose, and motivation.
59
And research backs it up.
60
And they show the same results, that intrinsic motivation, being pulled by meaning,
61
growth, purpose, contribution, leads to a much stronger performance and faster progress than rewards like money or fame or status.
62
Howard Schultz knew this firsthand.
63
He grew up in the Brooklyn projects.
64
His family had no healthcare, no financial security.
65
That pain became his why.
66
When he was building Starbucks, people made fun of him.
67
They mocked the idea of selling fancy coffee in America.
68
This is not Europe.
69
That's what they said.
70
They thought it would never work.
71
But Schulz, as you know, wasn't selling coffee.
72
He was selling an experience.
73
He was building a place of belonging, a place where someone from a project could walk in and feel seen.
74
That was his why.
75
It gave him the clarity and the stamina to push through a mountain of rejections for years and years.
76
And most of us missed this part.
77
We chase promotions and raises and equity and fame and subscribers.
78
That's why it can feel empty when we don't get what we want
79
and feel empty when we do get what we want.
80
So now, how do you switch to becoming intrinsically motivated?
81
That's a tough question.
82
It's not an easy question to answer.
83
But I think it's all about the internal story we tell ourselves.
84
We can try some small daily habits and rituals that can take us back to our original why insight.
85
First, you can do slow breathing every day to reset your biochemistry.
86
Some people meditate.
87
Second, you can exercise gratitude for all things big and small in your life.
88
Third, you can visualize the future you that's full of 10x potential.
89
Very vividly in your mind that works.
90
I even add a fourth step.
91
I think about people and send love and positive energy to them.
92
In my mind, do they know?
93
Of course they don't.
94
Does it change anything in their lives?
95
I don't think so.
96
But it changes me.
97
It changes my inner monologue.
98
It really switches you on and moves you to that positive state.
99
Top one percenters know this very well.
100
Your inner why keeps you in the game when nothing else makes sense.
101
Next is number three, and this is controversial.
102
You should be seeking discomfort.
103
Everyone talks about the superpower of cold plunges, and I agree.
104
But the most interesting part about the experience is this.
105
A systematic review of 11 studies with over 3,000 participants found that cold immersion does not reduce stress immediately.
106
The stress reduction happens about 12 hours after the exposure.
107
I find that fascinating because sometimes the real benefit shows up way later
108
and that's true for life as well seeking out uncomfortable things
109
today will train your nervous system to be more resilient years
110
later you know in my final year of college I failed
111
every single course like I got all F's across the board
112
and what made it worse was my early years in college
113
weren't great either you know I had not developed a strong academic foundation.
114
So I was lost at that point.
115
So I would have to relearn three years of mathematics in one year to do well in my final year
116
or else I wasn't going to graduate.
117
Here's what I did.
118
My setup, a mat, a desk lamp, and a water bottle.
119
I sat on the floor, crossed leg for 18 hours a day, 90 minutes of work, 30 minutes of break, and a lot of hydration.
120
And that went on for weeks, for months, for an entire year.
121
That extremely uncomfortable routine ended up building my future for years.
122
And more importantly, it gave me this confidence and clarity that no matter how bad things get,
123
there is always a way to turn things around.
124
That was a gift.
125
So here's how you can use this method.
126
Add deliberate discomfort weekly if you can.
127
Three mile runs, cold showers, heavy lifts, any task or project that you've been avoiding.
128
It's not whether you do well or not in that task.
129
It's about taking that plunge, sometimes literally.
130
Now we're on to number four, the power of networks.
131
If you're not tapping into other people's systems, you will always fall behind.
132
Metcalfe's law says that the value of a network grows exponentially.
133
So if you add 10 new nodes to your network, then you add 100 more possible connections.
134
That's why the right network can propel you forward in months compared to years when you go it all alone.
135
Here's a true story.
136
A friend of mine introduced me to a design agency.
137
We hired them for a project and they crushed it.
138
They were awesome.
139
The CEO of that agency became a good friend.
140
He introduced me to one of his board members.
141
That board member later became a CEO of a $600 million company, had a great exit, became an investor.
142
And just last week, he introduced me to the CEO of one of his portfolio companies where he has invested.
143
And the company they acquired has an investor who I just met.
144
See how the chain reaction just keeps going?
145
That's the exponential math of networks in real life.
146
It compounds faster than your skills.
147
It's not just about contacts.
148
The top 1% borrow other people's nervous systems as well.
149
Spend time with someone who is calm under chaos
150
or sharp under pressure and your nervous system will rewire to match their behavior.
151
Work with someone who is extremely crisp and articulate, and you'll see that you start writing and communicating better.
152
That's the kind of acceleration that you won't get from a university or a book.
153
Here's how you can use this idea.
154
One, make building your network your top priority.
155
Reach out every week.
156
Number two, ask for help ask for connections, ask how you can contribute.
157
And number three, ask yourself, who makes me sharper just by being around them?
158
Double down, spend as much time as you can with them.
159
Start showing up with contributions instead of requests.
160
Your network isn't just who you know, is who you become.
161
And now number five is our last one.
162
The final unlock you've been missing is identity shedding.
163
You become exactly what you see yourself as.
164
Most people cling to many self-limiting labels.
165
I'm sure you hear yourself saying, I'm not a coder, I'm not a leader, I'm not good on stage, I won't be a good marketer.
166
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
167
Your identity is like a snakeskin.
168
You can shed it, you can create a new one.
169
The top performers have always known this.
170
They jump in before they feel ready
171
and that's what keeps them compounding at 10x while others are staring themselves in the mirror, they don't like what they're seeing and they're getting destroyed by their own doubts.
172
I've lived this myself.
173
At different points of my life, I've worn different skins.
174
An investment banker, a musician, a marketer, a monk, a mathematician, a CEO, a board member, an investor.
175
These are all various manifested identities of the same person.
176
Was I really good at all of those roles?
177
No. Some identities fit better than others.
178
Sure.
179
But each time I shared an identity, I gained access to new skills and new rooms.
180
Every 10x leap was preceded by a 10x death of who I used to be.
181
You, yourselves, your identity are all constantly dying and are all constantly being reborn.
182
Here's how to use this.
183
Ask yourself, what identity am I holding on to today that no longer serves me.
184
Write that one down and then let it die.
185
Mourn for it.
186
Let the grief be with you.
187
But after a while, you'll see new skin coming on.
188
Like the spring season after a very long, cold, harsh winter.
189
And remember, you will never feel ready to bury the old you.
190
You will never feel worthy of the new you.
191
But please don't fear endings.
192
They're inevitable.
193
Fear the beginnings that you never allow.
194
Spring doesn't ask for winter's permission.
195
It just shows up.
196
So should you.
197
Those were my tips on how to progress 10x faster than anyone.
