A Day in Rome with Mark

intermediatetravel196 words

Lila travels to Rome with her friend Mark, who shows her that the best parts of a trip aren't just the big sights—but the small, unexpected moments.

Lila stepped off the train, her backpack heavy, and scanned the crowd. There was Mark, grinning, holding a paper cup of coffee. 'Took you long enough,' he said, handing her the cup. 'We’ve got a city to explore.'
They walked past busy streets where vendors sold warm pretzels and kids chased pigeons. Lila asked, 'Aren’t we going to the Colosseum?' Mark shook his head. 'Travel isn’t just about checking boxes,' he said. 'Wait till you see this.' He led her down a narrow alley, and suddenly they stood in a quiet square, where an old woman watered red flowers in a window box.
A cat stretched on a stone wall, and a man played the violin, his music soft. Lila sipped her coffee, now cold, but she didn’t care. 'This is better than any postcard,' she said. Mark laughed. 'That’s the point. When you travel with someone who knows the heart of a place, you don’t just see it—you feel it.' By sunset, Lila’s feet ached, but her heart felt light. She’d come to Rome to see history, but she’d left with a story—one that started with a train, a friend, and a cup of coffee.
