1
Hey English learners!
2
Welcome to this A1 English listening practice video.
3
I hope you're doing well.
4
Today we're gonna talk about a boring topic which is boredom.
5
Let's talk about being bored.
6
This is not something that people like.
7
For many people this is a terrible feeling especially for kids.
8
I remember when I was a kid when I felt bored it was awful.
9
I complained, I whined, right?
10
Or you complain in that voice that kids make when they're not happy.
11
I would tell my parents, that I was bored, that I wasn't happy.
12
People don't like being bored of course.
13
A lot of people hate this feeling and I think
14
that nowadays kids don't really have many opportunities to be bored like when I was a kid.
15
Because nowadays kids have so many different things, different forms of entertainment.
16
They have phones and screens and they can always watch something if they feel bored.
17
I didn't have that when I was a kid.
18
Sometimes I was just in my room, bored, with nothing to do and I can remember that feeling very well.
19
Today I think that kids always have something to do.
20
They can always find something to entertain them, right?
21
So it's a little different nowadays.
22
As an adult, when you're an adult, you don't really have as much time to be bored, right?
23
We have many things to do, many responsibilities.
24
There are always things that I need to do, places I need to go, people I need to help.
25
If you have a family, if you have kids, of course you spend time with them, you help them, you do things for them.
26
So as an adult, you don't really have as much time to be bored.
27
And honestly, being bored is not always a bad thing.
28
Okay?
29
I know we don't like being bored, but boredom is actually an important thing.
30
For example, it's important to have some time where you're not doing anything and you don't have stimulation,
31
things that are making your brain and your eyes work, sometimes it's important to just do nothing.
32
This is like rest for your brain.
33
It's important for your brain to rest and not always be doing something, right?
34
So boredom can be important for that reason.
35
You don't want to always be bored,
36
but sometimes being bored and doing nothing can give you and give your brain the rest that it needs, right?
37
Being bored can also be a good thing because it gives us
38
time to think and to organize our thoughts and to come up with ideas, to think of new ideas.
39
Sometimes when you just turn
40
everything off, all the screens and entertainment,
41
and you just stay alone with your thoughts in some room or outside or something, you think differently.
42
You can think more clearly and have different thoughts.
43
Sometimes you might think of things when you're bored that you didn't think of when you were watching something, for example.
44
So boredom can be good to help you think better, think differently.
45
It also can motivate you to be productive.
46
If you are bored for a long time, maybe you want to start working and doing something that is productive.
47
It motivates you to be productive, right?
48
That's another good thing.
49
And also boredom teaches you to be patient.
50
This is especially good for kids.
51
Kids need to learn to sit down for a while and not have a game or a screen or something.
52
My kids, for example, are learning to sit down the whole time when we're at church, for example.
53
So my son is getting better at sitting on his seat for the whole time that we're there.
54
And at the beginning, it wasn't easy because he got bored,
55
he wanted to do things and go places, but that boredom and sitting there, it was like training.
56
He trained to be able to be patient and sit down in the same seat for one hour.
57
That is a skill that we need.
58
Kids need to develop patience.
59
So if they have some boring parts of their day, it teaches them to just be patient and wait for the next thing.
60
So that is a good thing as well.
61
So even though I don't have a lot of time to be bored, I still get bored of certain things.
62
Sometimes I get bored of certain languages that I'm learning and then
63
I stop and I learn a different language and then maybe in the future I return to that first language and then it's fun again.
64
Sometimes if something is boring for us, we can just switch, we can change to something else and then come back to it.
65
So boredom can come and you can use it to also try new things.
66
It motivates you to try new things and then go back to the old things.
67
Maybe you're getting bored of English right now.
68
Maybe you just need to try something different with your English.
69
Maybe if you have been watching movies in English and you're bored of that,
70
maybe you can start listening to music in English or listening to podcasts in English.
71
If you change to a different activity, then you might not be bored anymore.
72
So, just a piece of advice.
73
Boredom is a normal part of everyday life.
74
Boredom is a normal thing we experience.
75
It can be hard, it can be frustrating, but boredom can be a good thing and it can help us in some ways.
76
And if you're feeling bored if you have something that is boring for you now.
77
Maybe you can change things a little and then in the future you can come back to that thing and it won't be boring.
78
So I just talked for like 10 minutes about boredom, about being bored.
79
This is a boring topic but I try to talk about everything so you get experience listening to me talking about different topics.
80
Hopefully the next topic will be a funner one than this one but I know that this was good practice for your listening.

Why practice speaking with this video?

Engaging with the topic of boredom, as discussed in this A1 English listening practice video, provides an excellent opportunity to enhance your speaking skills. This context allows English learners to explore a relatable feeling while practicing their language abilities. By repeating phrases and ideas presented in the video, you can effectively employ the shadowing technique, a method where you listen to a speaker and try to mimic their words and intonation in real time.

This process not only aids in developing fluency but also helps with pronunciation and comprehension. When you practice speaking about boredom, you tap into a common experience, making it easier to express yourself. Expanding your vocabulary around this theme prepares you for various speaking situations, whether in casual conversations or during structured tasks like IELTS speaking practice.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

In the video, several key structures emerge that enhance your understanding of English grammar and expression:

  • “I remember when I was a kid...” – This past tense structure is vital for sharing personal anecdotes. Use it to make your stories relevant and engaging.
  • “People don't like being bored...” – The use of the present simple here emphasizes a general truth, which is useful for discussing common opinions or feelings.
  • “Sometimes when you just turn everything off...” – The use of "sometimes" allows you to express variability in experiences, which can add depth to your conversations.

Mastering these structures equips you to share thoughts and feelings fluently, enhancing your conversational abilities as you learn English with YouTube.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice speaking along with the video, be mindful of certain pronunciation challenges that may arise:

  • “Bored” vs. “Boring” – Pay attention to the differentiation in pronunciation between these two forms. The “d” sound at the end of “bored” should be distinct, while “boring” contains a soft “ing” ending.
  • Intonation – Notice how the speaker emphasizes certain words. Mimicking their rhythm and emphasis can help improve your overall speaking clarity.
  • Eliciting emotion – Try expressing the feelings of boredom through your tone. This not only adds expression to your speech but also makes your conversations more engaging.

By focusing on these aspects during your practice, you can develop a more natural and fluent speaking style, allowing for effective communication in various scenarios.
