Hi there everybody and welcome to Animal World.
2
Before you start your visit,
3
I'd just like to tell you about a few special events happening here today.
4
They're all free, and I'd really encourage you to go to as many of them as you can,
5
as I think you'll learn a lot.
6
The first event is called the World of Ants,
7
and it's happening this morning,
8
quite soon, in the Insect House,
9
which is just a short walk from here.
10
The well-known entomologist Dr David Crocker,
11
who many of you will have seen on television,
12
is giving a lecture all about ants,
13
the different types of ants,
14
how they organise themselves, what they eat,
15
their behaviour and so on.
16
It's actually a fascinating subject.
17
So, The World of Ants,
18
a lecture by Dr Crocker in the insect house and it starts at 11 o'clock and lasts for 60 minutes.
19
At midday, that's 12 o'clock,
20
there's a film which is just as fascinating
21
and it's called the great migration this is all about birds
22
and how they migrate across continents and oceans using the sun the stars
23
and the earth's magnetic field as i said it's a film an absolutely spectacular film
24
which all the family will enjoy some fabulous photography
25
and it's on in theater c which you can see here just behind me
26
so bear that in mind for 12 o'clock
27
The next event is a demonstration taking place in the exhibition room and given by Monica Chadda.
28
It's called Encouraging Garden Wildlife.
29
Monica will be showing you ways of encouraging animals,
30
birds and other wildlife to visit and live in your garden,
31
how to place boxes for nests,
32
what food to put out for them and all sorts of practical advice.
33
at 2.30, so just after lunch.
34
The final free event for today is Birds of Prey.
35
Tasha, their keeper, will be giving a display of some of our most magnificent birds and how they fly,
36
and I thoroughly recommend this event.
37
The display includes eagles, vultures and owls,
38
and will be starting at 3.45 on the lawn outside.
39
It's an unforgettable experience.
40
So remember, on the front lawn at 3.45 to see the birds flying.
41
Track 28, Unit 5, Listening,
42
Exercise 5
43
now i'll just give you a few directions before you leave
44
especially for those of you who are feeling a bit hungry
45
when you leave the main building you come to an area where the path divides
46
if you take the right hand path you'll see the lake on your right
47
and exactly opposite the lake on your left is the gift shop apart from selling gifts it sells snacks sandwiches
48
and light drinks.
49
If you walk on past the lake,
50
on your right, you'll also see the penguins.
51
Go past the penguins and you'll come to the restaurant,
52
also on your right.
53
Don't go too far or you'll come to the aquarium.
54
The aquarium is on your right at the crossroad and just over the crossroad,
55
also on your right, is the lion enclosure.
56
If you're thinking of having a picnic,
57
the best place to go is the picnic area
58
and for this you need to turn left at the crossroad and walk along a few metres
59
at the end of the path you'll find the picnic area on your left
60
now if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them
61
and once again I really hope you enjoy your visit thank you

Why practice speaking with this video?

The video titled "Complete IELTS Band 4 5 Student's Book Unit 5" offers an engaging context for English speaking practice, centered around a visit to an animal world. This immersive scenario allows learners to enhance their English speaking practice by mimicking the speaker's enthusiastic presentation style. By participating in such dialogues, learners can improve not only their fluency but also their ability to convey excitement and interest in various topics.

Utilizing videos like this one provides multiple benefits. Firstly, it encourages learners to practice their speaking skills in a context that is relevant and stimulating—a vital aspect of learning English with YouTube. Secondly, structuring responses based on the content of the video develops cognitive skills as learners connect new vocabulary and concepts to their speech.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, several grammatical structures and expressions are particularly noteworthy:

  • Imperative forms: The speaker uses instructions such as "I’d just like to tell you" and "I thoroughly recommend this event", which are effective for making suggestions and giving directions. This form helps learners know how to convey requests or offers in daily conversation.
  • Present continuous tense: Phrases like "it’s happening this morning" and "Monica will be showing" are used to describe ongoing actions. This structure is essential for discussing future activities and current events.
  • Descriptive language: Words like "fascinating" and "unforgettable" enhance the speaker's descriptions, allowing learners to enrich their vocabulary. Using adjectives effectively can greatly improve one's speech and make conversations more engaging.
  • Time expressions: Phrases such as "at midday" and "just after lunch" are key for linking events in a timeline. Mastering these expressions enables learners to discuss past and future events cohesively.

Common Pronunciation Traps

When watching the video, learners may encounter several pronunciation challenges that are important to address for improving English pronunciation:

  • “Ants” - The 'a' in 'ants' is often pronounced differently based on regional accents. Learners should focus on the short 'a' sound to ensure clarity.
  • “Migration” - The stress typically falls on the second syllable, which can be tricky. Practice shadowing this word to get familiar with the correct rhythm.
  • “Fascinating” - The speaker uses this word frequently. The pronunciation of the 't' can be soft; practicing this will enhance fluency in fast conversations.
  • “Encouraging” and “Wildlife” - These two words often merge in fast speech. Focusing on crisp vowel sounds can help learners distinguish them better during conversations.

By practicing with this video, learners can engage in shadow speech techniques to mimic the speaker's tone and pace. This practice not only aids in mastering challenging words but also helps fluency and confidence in everyday English communication. So join in and start practicing today!
