and honestly I started thinking maybe I'm just not caught up for this whole studying thing.

Maybe some people were just naturally smart and I just wasn't one of them.

and unfortunately when that happens it really does mess with your head

because then you start thinking oh it's never gonna happen for me blah blah blah.

You start losing a lot of confidence in yourself

and you start asking what's the point in trying hard if I still fail anyways.

But here's the thing, this shift doesn't come from suddenly becoming smart all of a sudden.

It's not even about finding the perfect study hack because there is no perfect study hack.

It came from slowly changing how I thought about learning and how I thought about studying.

Notice how I mentioned the two things separately.

That's because learning and studying is completely different in my books.

Now, I do want to preface that this is not a glow up story.

This is more of a figure it out story.

So it's not like a very glorified, romanticized thing.

It's literally like a gruesome process that took me from start to finish.

I want to walk you through everything, every thought process that I had that helped me to go from failing to finally making progress.

Real steady progress.

When I first got my E, I obviously freaked out because let's face it, I'm Asian.

You can see that I'm Asian.

And with this comes a lot of things as in my parents doesn't want me to fail anything.

And I failed.

That's it like just with that itself I think you can see what the rest of the story is gonna be.

This is classic overdrive mode.

I downloaded new productivity apps, started watching those aesthetic study vlogs, started doing so much more than I used to before

when I was already studying 10 hours a day and that was every single day.

It wasn't just a cram before the exam either.

I was studying 10 hours every single day, sometimes maybe 15 hours.

Like I was going crazy with this.

And surprise, surprise, my grades still didn't improve.

Eventually, I had to stop and be honest with myself.

Like, what am I even doing when I study?

Is it am I actually studying or am I just saying I'm studying

because I'm holding my highlighter and coloring my entire textbook?

When I realized that I wasn't actually studying and just basically turning my 500 pound textbook into a coloring book,

I realized then and there that something had to change.

To make it cute and memorable, I derived this name from my initials, which is PCFG.

And hence, you can see my YouTube name is PCFG Study.

So PCFG in my term stands for presence, clarity, foundations, and growth.

These four things are my four pillars and they changed my entire outlook to studying.

I stopped fake studying.

If I was going to study, I would actually study.

It doesn't matter if I studied for five minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour, 10 hours, I will do it in presence.

I wouldn't let my mind wander, which is a very difficult thing to do.

But once you start training yourself to do it, you will get there eventually.

I realized that I was kind of understanding stuff, which is basically the same thing as saying that I don't understand it at all.

So I started breaking things down in my own words.

I'd explain stuff out loud.

I tried to link it to things that are happening in my day-to-day lives.

And then with that, it started to click in my head.

I realized that I didn't have the foundations to a lot of the subjects that I was learning.

I was struggling in maths because I didn't know how to do mental maths.

I didn't know the proper way to add, multiply, subtract, divide.

It seems so simple, it seems so easy, but I just completely missed it.

I took it so lightly before that I didn't have the mastery of it.

There is a difference between you knowing how to add, multiply, use fractions and whatever and comparing that to mastering it.

You need to get to a point where you can literally multiply stuff in your head really easily.

Obviously, I can't do like 10-digit numbers, but simple ones like two to three-digit numbers, I can multiply that easily in my head.

And that is the moment when I actually understood what maths is.

Because I built up on my foundations all over again, it made the harder stuff so much more achievable.

Because now I'm like, oh my god, I understand maths.

I understand the core of maths, what maths is trying to do.

And that's the same with every other subject.

If you want to understand, for example, you don't even have to go that far.

Imagine you're talking to your friend and your friend is going all over the place

because something happened and let's say they broke up with their boyfriend or whatever, and they're trying to tell you this entire story of what happened, but they're panicking and they're going all over the place.

So instead of doing the same things over and over again when it wasn't working before, I started experimenting.

I spent an entire month trying out multiple different study techniques and seeing which ones stick.

Now the problem was I was expecting

that it was going to be one study technique that was perfect for all the other subjects.

You can't use the same techniques for maths as you do for chemistry.

So with that, you have to try it out for every single subject

that you're doing until you find the one that sticks for each one of them.

Now for me, for chemistry, for example, I have four study techniques that works really well for me, which is mnemonics, Feynman technique, blurting, and the Pomodoro technique.

Biology, on the other hand, the method of loci or method of loci works best for me, which is basically just using your mind palace.

And then blurting also works for me, Pomodoro works for me, and then Feynman technique also works for me for that one.

While math is literally just grinding out the past papers.

So I wouldn't have realized this if I didn't spend so much time literally just try out all the study techniques.

If I could go back to the version of me that got an E every single exam, I wouldn't say work harder because that's what everyone told me to do.
