1
Welcome to CIO Leadership Live at IDC Directions.
2
I'm honored to welcome Sarah Batatom, CIO and CISO Navanta on the show again.
3
Thanks so much for being on the show, Sarah.
4
We just got off the stage on the main stage.
5
Welcome.
6
Thank you so much.
7
Thank you, Lee, for having me here again.
8
Can you introduce yourself and just maybe tell us a little bit about your role at Navanta?
9
Sure.
10
Sarah Beth Adams, CIO CISO at Navanta.
11
I have a dual role and it kind of becomes a yin -yang -yang as my role progresses.
12
But when it comes to AI, as we talked about on stage, I do want to transform the organization in a in a safe
13
and safe manner but at the same time you have to always balance the business
14
as well as the technology so there
15
so my dual role kind of plays both roles at the same time
16
and you just have to balance it just like anything else in life well we just thank you
17
so much we just had a great chat on the stage about your role as a CIO
18
and how it's transformed like from you know being maybe the guy
19
and the two guys and the girl in the basement saying have turn it on
20
and off again to like really being um you know involved into a leadership role in the organization
21
so can you talk about some of the strategies you do in working with your c -suite
22
and maybe the board of directors around them understanding especially what's
23
happening right now with technology you know evolution around gen ai i know you must have a lot of pressures
24
and a lot of questions and they want to know how to accelerate business through it
25
so could you talk a little bit about your changing role no i appreciate it
26
because i feel like they to be a chief AI officer now too
27
because it is a lot different in the sense
28
that it's a brand new setup that you need to also go through the process of change management training and educating.
29
So when it comes to the management, senior management, you have to educate like what does AI mean for each organization?
30
What would be our AI strategy?
31
Because machine learning has been around for many,
32
many years so what everyone is talking about the definition of ai for organization is gen ai
33
and what does that mean
34
so then that's where i worked with our senior leadership as
35
well as everyone in the company we are looking at the gen ai
36
and that's our strategy
37
and then we start maturing in a different ways you start with experimenting experimenting many things
38
so um you know there there's multitude of enterprise level um buy
39
that you could buy or you build it within
40
but build it within it comes with a different set of um items
41
that you have to make sure that you're paying attention to
42
and board as well now we have to present in front of the board
43
because ai has become such a big topic
44
that not only uh board wants to know how we progressing
45
and how is
46
that going to be an enabler for productivity as well as transforming a competitive advantage of our product line
47
but also the privacy aspect of it of how we're protecting our ip information from um the eyes
48
that are not supposed to be uh seeing them right
49
so you're like a true partner with this well you are part of the c -suite
50
but you're a true partner with the other areas of the business in in helping evolve
51
and grow okay and you also hold a dual role you said cio on this
52
and cia over here um two
53
or two two shoulders probably arguing with each other at times
54
about what you want to do can you talk a little bit about you know security around
55
and risk around especially what's happening with with data and ai absolutely um this is um
56
data is important because data um it is the ip information of your company
57
and if it gets out this is your company goes away
58
so how do we make sure that we're still competitive
59
but then also looking at it in a protective way
60
so this is where we have AI governance I would say a triangle
61
that it starts with the the operation team members
62
and this is where we are also talking about how do we have the infrastructure team members to be
63
and security to be forefront as before they were in the basement
64
and they're not coming up yeah exactly so um
65
so they're the they're the team that goes around and make sure
66
that they do the research and figure out what are the tool sets
67
that you know you could take a look at and make sure
68
that they are our data privacy is protected
69
or data it stays within the company and then it goes to the ai governance in the second level, which is AI Council.
70
That is as multitude of the team members across.
71
So it's a cross -functional effort to look at our potential pilots that we want to do.
72
So it comes from the operation team.
73
It comes from also different members within AI Council.
74
And we discuss, we go through the process of, is this a business case?
75
Is this a good business case to in order to pursue
76
is going to be safe this is going to give us a revenue growth
77
so these are the two major uh kpis
78
that we have to make sure is answering yes before we spend the time
79
and the money in order to progress and
80
so we've been doing this for almost a year and a half
81
and happy to say that we've been really focused with the r d aspect
82
and making sure that we could get the products out and so therefore enable the growth within the company and also
83
serve our customers, which are the forefront of our company in order to make sure they're happy and served.
84
Fantastic.
85
Thank you for sharing that with us.
86
I know it'll be really impactful to anyone listening in who maybe works with a separate CISO
87
and they're in their CIO role, so I appreciate that.
88
Thank you.
89
All right.
90
Well, this is the first time we've had a chance to meet person
91
because we are in san jose at the 60th anniversary of idc directions
92
so can you just talk a little bit perhaps about like attending events like this
93
and others and how
94
that really helps support support you in your own role in
95
your career well it was i mean i've been working with you for for a few years
96
and it's so nice that post pandemic you're able to see people yeah um
97
because people relationship it matters um you can build trust
98
and relationship if you're not in person right um once you've built
99
that foundation it's okay to be online
100
and then as we you know as we grow through um different you know um part of the world
101
and we travel and stuff it's okay but
102
what i love about in -person meetings are meeting other people
103
networking this is a great event i've been going to the different sessions um
104
and just it's very inspiring to kind of hear other points of view, how others are trying to solve the same problem that I've been thinking about.
105
And because learning is number one, like you always have to be open to learn and you can never stop learning.
106
So, and also meeting you in person.
107
I know, it's been great.
108
Which has been awesome.
109
Yeah, it's been really wonderful.
110
Well, thank you so much for joining us today on the stage, on the main, you know, main stage for a panel.
111
I really appreciate that.
112
And I appreciate our continued collaboration and discussion.
113
Thank you so much, Lee.
114
Thanks.
115
Thank you.
