1
Good morning, President Vyerson, the Board of Trustees,
2
faculties, esteemed guests, family, friends,
3
and of course, my fellow graduates of the SNHU class of 2025.
4
Before I begin, I'd like to take a moment to honor my family who are here with me today
5
and those who are watching all the way from Vietnam.
6
I would like to thank you,
7
my friends, my parents, my brothers and sisters.
8
Class of 2025, it feels so good to stand before you today,
9
especially because I finally get to see the top of everyone's head from here.
10
As someone who's always the shortest in the room,
11
I've spent my whole life looking up to others.
12
Most of the time, out of necessity,
13
of course, but more often, out of admiration.
14
And the people I admire most tower over others not in height either but in character.
15
My parents with their strength and endless sacrifice are the reason why I am standing here today.
16
In 2013 my family left everything familiar in Vietnam so my mom could pursue her master's degree right here at SNHU.
17
At the time, she was juggling jobs to support the family,
18
raising two young kids, taking care of my dad in the hospital,
19
all while shielding me and my sister from distress so that we could be the carefree kids all children deserve to be.
20
Through it all, she graduated among the top of her class year.
21
10 years later, I now stand in the very place she once stood,
22
following her footsteps and carrying forward her lessons with me.
23
My parents are the people I've always looked up to,
24
and today as I look around the room,
25
I see the same strength,
26
perseverance, and inspiration in all of you.
27
Because no matter how different our journeys have been,
28
we've all faced challenges and probably had to sacrifice some sleep to get here.
29
But despite our questionable sleep schedules,
30
there's one thing I know we've all mastered.
31
Dreaming.
32
Not the kind that happens when you actually do sleep,
33
but the dreams we hold on to when we're awake.
34
The kind that pushes you forward even when the path is unclear.
35
And I believe we all dream of changing the world in some way.
36
But the truth is, before we can change the world,
37
we need to know what it truly looks like.
38
To see the world's beauty in its entirety,
39
we must accept its pain,
40
its chaos, and its imperfections.
41
Most importantly, we need to look within ourselves,
42
because change doesn't start out there it starts right here
43
if you want to see kindness be kind if you want justice then stand for what's right
44
if you want a better future then shape it with your own hands the people you
45
and i look up to the most didn't wait for the world to change.
46
They changed themselves first.
47
They saw the world for what it was and then they imagined what it could be.
48
And now my fellow graduates, it's our turn.
49
Soon we'll walk across the stage ready to step into the world.
50
But no matter where life takes next let's never stop looking up not just to those who inspire us
51
but to the possibilities ahead to the challenges that will shape us
52
and to the dreams that will drive us class of 2025 the world is waiting
53
and the question is what will you do congratulations and thank you

Why practice speaking with this video?

Practicing speaking through motivational speeches, such as the one given by a graduate at SNHU, provides an excellent opportunity to improve English pronunciation and fluency. The speaker’s engaging delivery and emotive tone offer a realistic context for learners to emulate. By shadowing this speech, you can not only enhance your speaking skills but also absorb valuable life lessons about perseverance, ambition, and the importance of reflecting on personal journeys. This context makes it easier to relate to the material, as it resonates with various experiences that many individuals face, thus fueling motivation.

Benefits of Shadowing

  • Enhances listening comprehension through exposure to authentic language use.
  • Improves pronunciation by mimicking the speaker’s exact sounds and intonation patterns.
  • Builds confidence in speaking by encouraging learners to imitate natural speech rhythms.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Analyzing the speech reveals several key grammatical structures and expressions that are particularly beneficial for English learners:

  • “Before I begin, I’d like to…” – This phrase is a common way to express gratitude or acknowledgment and sets a friendly tone.
  • “Most importantly, we need to look within ourselves…” – This structure emphasizes the importance of introspection, a useful expression for discussing personal growth.
  • “If you want to see kindness, be kind…” – This structure uses conditional language effectively, illustrating how actions lead to desired outcomes.

Incorporating such phrases into your vocabulary will help you express yourself more fluently in discussions about personal and social themes, which are often encountered in everyday conversations.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice speaking by shadowing this video, pay close attention to the following challenging words and phrases:

  • “Perseverance” – This word has multiple syllables and can be tricky. Focus on breaking it down: per-se-ver-ance.
  • “Dreaming” – The pronunciation requires a clear “ee” sound. Ensure this is not muddied with other vowel sounds.
  • “Inspiration” – This term may be pronounced quickly in natural speech. Practice enunciating each syllable clearly: in-spi-ra-tion.

Utilizing techniques from shadowspeak or shadow speech can guide you in confronting these pronunciation challenges effectively as part of your English speaking practice.
