And of course, we have to talk about lucky money.
2
Now, this lucky money, it comes in red envelopes for good luck.
3
And the bills are always in perfect condition and brand new.
4
What's up, my friends?
5
Chào mừng các bạn quay trở lại với podcast Slow and Clear của What's Up English.
6
Chúc mừng năm mới, everyone.
7
Happy 2025 New Year.
8
This is the first time I have done a podcast about Tet, Tet?
9
I'm going to call it Tet or Lunar New Year.
10
But yeah, the first time I've done a podcast about Lunar New Year.
11
And for anyone who doesn't know me,
12
my name's Carter and I created What's Up English.
13
All right, so for this podcast,
14
first we're going to talk a bit about the history of Tet,
15
and then we're going to move on to some Tet traditions.
16
And then I will tell you some things about like what foreigners do on Tet.
17
Like, have I been just alone in my room for the past five days?
18
Am I starving?
19
Do I have no more food?
20
I will tell you guys everything.
21
And remember, as always, every podcast that I make comes with a free PDF
22
that includes all of the words related to the topic,
23
like the word list.
24
And it comes with a transcript with everything that I said in this podcast.
25
All you have to do is click the link in the description,
26
put in your email, and then I will send it to you completely for free.
27
So before we start talking about Tet,
28
I have to tell for,
29
I have to say for my viewers who have watched me for a long time,
30
long time no see.
31
I'm very, very sorry for disappearing for like five months.
32
It's been quite a long time.
33
I want to apologize for that.
34
I just disappeared for five months,
35
but I promise there is a good reason for it.
36
Or should I say a few reasons for that.
37
One of those reasons is because I've been focusing a lot on my online university.
38
Another reason is because my brother came to Vietnam to visit me for about three weeks When we went to Hazang,
39
we did a lot of really cool things.
40
And I'll actually tell you guys all about that in another video.
41
But also, I'd say the biggest reason why I haven't uploaded is because I've been working on a huge project.
42
And that project is a step-by-step system to help you guys go from not being able to speak English to speaking English.
43
And one of the first steps towards speaking English is learning pronunciation.
44
And that's why the first course I created in this step-by-step system is the Complete American English Pronunciation Course.
45
This course is perfect for those of you who can understand my podcast,
46
but who struggle to speak English,
47
or for those of you who can speak some English,
48
but you want to improve your accent or your pronunciation.
49
Because in this course, you'll learn every sound in the IPA.
50
So you'll be able to look up any word in the dictionary and pronounce it perfectly.
51
But it's also full of examples like words and phrases
52
and sentences that you can practice that are actually useful in daily life.
53
I designed it specifically for Vietnamese people like you,
54
where we go over some tricky sounds like the dark L,
55
like in full or world,
56
and ending sounds like the ending S, ER, all that stuff.
57
And to top it off,
58
you'll get a free shadowing course as a bonus where you can shadow my slow and clear speech.
59
It's actually not too slow,
60
but you can slow it down in the video player where I talk about topics on daily life like work,
61
school, all of that stuff.
62
So if you're interested in that course,
63
then click the link in the description.
64
There's a big sale going on for Tet right now,
65
and that sale will last for two weeks after this video is posted.
66
After the two weeks, the price will go up,
67
and this is a real sale.
68
It's not a fake sale that goes on forever.
69
No, the price will actually go up after two weeks.
70
So if this course is interesting to you,
71
then just click the link in the description below.
72
And yeah, I would really appreciate your support.
73
For What's Up English, I'm trying to build a real business because this is my full-time job.
74
So I want to give you guys something that is very useful for you,
75
a guided system where you can learn step by step and the value is really high and the quality is really high.
76
All right, so let's get on with the podcast.
77
First, I'm going to tell you guys about a personal story of mine for Tet,
78
which is I've been in Vietnam for quite a few years,
79
I'd say almost nine years.
80
Most of the Tet holidays that I've had,
81
I have pretty much stayed at home.
82
There were a few times that I traveled,
83
but I'll tell you about the one during COVID.
84
And this one was the worst and the best because,
85
well, COVID was happening.
86
So people were not able to go out and Tet Holiday came.
87
At that time people couldn't really go anywhere.
88
They were stuck at home.
89
I was lucky that my landlords gave me a ton of noodles and I got a lot of chun cakes.
90
And so I stayed at home for about five days and every day I ate fried chun cake and noodles.
91
Only pretty much those two things.
92
I was too lazy to go anywhere.
93
I was working on some work of mine.
94
And yeah, I would wake up,
95
slice the chun cake, fry it, eat it.
96
It's chun cake.
97
So you're full for like four hours, four or five hours.
98
And I ate that every day for four
99
or five days i remember near the end of the four
100
or five days eating chun cake every day i started to really get tired of it
101
but yeah so that and i and i'm saying that was the best and the worst
102
tet because it was really nice to actually just stay home for those few days guilt-free
103
because we weren't really allowed to go outside
104
so I just stayed home did some work played video games
105
and it was quite nice because I'm a pretty introverted person
106
and so yeah it wasn't too difficult to stay home I'm sure many of you could understand
107
that but it was also the worst
108
because it was hard to get anything else to eat other than noodles
109
and chun cake but like I said I was very lucky that my landlords got those for me.
110
So that was my personal story about Tet.
111
I know it's not it's not too amazing but let's move on to the history and the meaning of Tet.
112
I think talking about these will help you explain to your friends
113
or whoever you talk to about Vietnamese Lunar New Year to them in English.
114
So firstly, TET, which is called Lunar New Year in English,
115
it marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
116
So it marks the changing of seasons,
117
going from one season to another.
118
And it's based on the lunar calendar.
119
And since it's based on the lunar calendar,
120
the date of Tet changes each year
121
because it follows the cycles of the moon
122
so the actual meaning of Tet was it used to be for the agri-fed agricultural festival
123
but now it's more about fresh starts and families getting together
124
and celebrating but before it It had more to do with farming and the changing of the seasons.
125
So how do people prepare for Tet?
126
One tradition is that you don't clean during Tet.
127
You have to clean before Tet.
128
By the way, please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these things.
129
Throw it in the comments.
130
If something is wrong, please correct me.
131
but people clean before TET because the dust around your house and the dirt whatever
132
it represents the bad luck from the last year
133
and you shouldn't clean during TET
134
because it symbolizes sweeping away the new fortune the new luck the new wealth all right so that's an interesting one.
135
You can't clean before, or you can't clean during Tet.
136
You have to clean before Tet.
137
So for food, one of the main foods,
138
of course, is Chung Cake.
139
And the way that they wrap the Chung Cake are in these things called Zong leaves.
140
What's interesting about these leaves is that they're naturally antibacterial.
141
So they're a good way to naturally preserve the Chung Cake.
142
and if you're wondering
143
if in the west do we have our own type of
144
chung cake i suppose for christmas it would be like fruit cake i've never really eaten fruit cake
145
but for many families it is quite popular one interesting thing is
146
that one of the reasons why they made chung cake
147
and it's wrapped in those leaves is
148
because the markets would be closed for a long time
149
so with these chung cakes you would have food to last a few a few weeks
150
while everything was closed now there are two types of chung cake there is the chung cake in the north
151
which is square and then there's bangtet in the south
152
and i don't know i suppose we call it that cake
153
but it's round
154
and it's wrapped in a banana leaf instead of the zom leaf zom leaf i'm not sure what
155
that is in english let me look it up real quick oh man maybe just call it dong leaves
156
because the real word for that is stachy Faryneum placentarium.
157
Yeah, stick to zong leaves.
158
So anyway, one thing that's common between them is they both have to be boiled for a long time.
159
Apart from bánh chưng, apart from chưng cake,
160
people also eat candied fruits.
161
You don't really need to say dried candied fruits because I found the most common word for these were just candied fruits.
162
These fruits can be things like ginger,
163
coconut, winter melon, lotus seeds.
164
Personally, I like the coconut one the most because it's a little bit crunchy.
165
Okay, so moving on to more Tet traditions.
166
During Tet, you'll see a lot of peach blossoms,
167
a lot of cherry blossoms,
168
and a lot of kumquat trees.
169
And the funny thing about these kumquat trees is you'll be driving on the road
170
and then you'll see a bump in the road
171
and just a bunch of kumquats
172
because everyone who was driving past there with the kumquat tree hit the bump and then the kumquats fell off.
173
So that's kind of funny.
174
Now we'll talk about some more traditions
175
and the big one is the first day visitor
176
so apparently to choose the right person to be the first
177
one to step foot in your house they should be born in a zodiac year
178
that is compatible compatible with the homeowner they should be a person who is successful happy and pretty good with their money.
179
And there are some combinations with the birth year with the zodiac symbol that you should avoid.
180
Like if the homeowner is one zodiac symbol,
181
then there are some combinations with another zodiac symbol that you should totally avoid.
182
So now people will pre-plan or pre-book the person who steps foot in their house first.
183
And this is taken so seriously that some people will even hide at home and not go out.
184
So they're not accidentally the first person to step in somebody else's house.
185
And during Tet, from what I've heard,
186
people wouldn't used to travel much.
187
But these days, a lot of younger people and just normal people are traveling more and more during Tet.
188
a lot of young people also play some card games.
189
So there are three main games.
190
So I've heard I have not played any of them.
191
So you could say young people often play some card games.
192
And of course, we have to talk about lucky money.
193
Now, this lucky money, it comes in red envelopes for good luck.
194
And the bills are always in perfect condition and brand new.
195
So the bills are perfect.
196
You can give these bills to whoever you want,
197
especially if they're older or younger than you.
198
And now some banks even give digital lucky money.
199
So you can gift someone lucky money just through the app.
200
In my opinion, it's not really the same.
201
You might as well just bank transfer them money.
202
But yeah, it's an interesting way to keep a tradition alive in the modern times.
203
And during Tet, there shouldn't be any arguing or crying.
204
If you want to comment why that is below, please let me know.
205
Like, what does that mean?
206
And why are you not allowed to argue or cry?
207
I assume it will bring bad luck or it will attract bad spirits.
208
and it's also not good to borrow money or ask for money from people who owe you money during Tet.
209
So you shouldn't try to get people to pay their debt to you if they owe you money.
210
All right, so let's move on to the last part of the podcast,
211
which is what is Tet like for foreigners in Vietnam?
212
So if the foreigner has a boyfriend or girlfriend or a spouse,
213
then they will often go with them on a trip or to their hometown.
214
Well, assuming the boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse is a Vietnamese person.
215
Now since many cities in Vietnam,
216
I guess pretty much all of them,
217
turned into ghost towns during Tet,
218
because of that a lot of foreigners will decide to travel for Tet.
219
For example, one year I went to Thailand,
220
another year I went to Malaysia,
221
and when you come back then things are pretty much back to normal.
222
But the funny thing that happens with a lot of foreigners is when it's their first Tet in Vietnam,
223
their first Lunar New Year,
224
and they don't expect it to become a ghost town.
225
And then they don't know what to do.
226
Like, everywhere is closed.
227
How do I get food?
228
How do I survive?
229
And then it becomes pretty much a survival challenge for about a week.
230
and so yeah that can be kind of funny
231
so yeah I think that covers a lot of the main things about Tet
232
if I missed anything feel free to comment down below I
233
hope this will help you to talk about Tet to your friends family co-workers whatever probably not your family
234
because you'll speak Vietnamese to your family but to anyone who speaks English
235
and guys again I'm sorry for disappearing for five months.
236
I'm really sorry about that.
237
Uploads will be consistent again once this course is uploaded.
238
Make sure to check out the course in the description below.
239
And I hope you guys have a fantastic tet.
240
Have a great holiday and I will see you in the next video.
241
See you later.
242
Happy New Year.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

  • “What’s up, my friends?” – A casual greeting that reflects a friendly tone, perfect for informal conversations.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice speaking along with this podcast, pay attention to some tricky sounds that may challenge non-native speakers:

  • “Tet” – Ensure you pronounce this correctly, focusing on the short ‘e’ and the final ‘t’ sound to avoid it sounding like “Tet.”
  • “Vietnam” – Pay attention to the ‘V’ sound at the beginning and ensure the second syllable is clear and distinct.
  • “Pronunciation” – This word often trips up learners. Focus on breaking it down into syllables: pro-nun-ci-a-tion, ensuring each part is pronounced clearly.

Using these insights during your shadow speech practice will not only help you in everyday conversations but also in formal settings and speaking exams like IELTS. Keep practicing with resources that incorporate native speech to continuously improve your English pronunciation and fluency!
