I know it's been a while since I last uploaded.

So I hope you guys are doing really well.

I hope everything is good.

I hope 2024 has been a good year so far, hopefully.

Um, so in this podcast,

I'm going to tell you guys first,

why haven't I uploaded in a few months?

And two, I'm going to tell you guys some exciting news for what is coming for What's Up English in 2024.

And these are, this news is good news for you and for me.

This is news that I believe will help you guys to get better at English,

much better at English for 2024.

And I'm going to tell you guys how that is going to happen.

In this podcast, first I'm going to tell you guys why I haven't uploaded.

And then I'm going to tell you guys some big interesting news for 2024.

so let's start with why I haven't uploaded in a while.

Yeah, I think it's been over two months since I last uploaded

and my last video was the video like five tips on how to speak better,

how to speak more fluently.

And after I released that video,

then I started the process again of making a new video.

And that process is, you know,

sit down, think of an idea,

outline, write the script, do all that stuff to make a video.

But as I sat down and was thinking about the idea for the next video,

I realized that there's not really any structure to the way I make videos.

Like I make a video about one thing and then the next week I make a video about something else.

And it was just kind of random.

Like the videos didn't relate to each other and one video did not like logically lead to the next one.

And I realized a few things.

Firstly, when I make videos like that,

it makes it really hard to think of new ideas every time.

Because every time you go to make a video,

you have to like start all over again.

And I'm thinking, okay, well,

what will this video be about?

And how will I do this video?

So I realized I needed a system.

I needed a system that would make it so the videos would be more organized.

And if they were more organized,

then after releasing videos for a year or two years,

then my channel would be a set of videos

or a library of videos that were organized that you could watch one and then logically go to the next one.

have a bit of a structure for learning English.

Whereas if I just kept making random videos like one video one week about this and then the next week about that,

then that's what my channel would become.

Just a big bunch of unorganized videos that don't have much structure and are not related to each other.

I I wanted to make a system and when I thought about what

that system would be I thought okay it needs to have three things

so first it needs to be organized it needs to be

organized in a way where you can learn based on topics or based on skills that you want to learn.

Two of course I want them to be very useful for learning English.

I want the videos to be effective.

And three, they would have to be interesting.

And to make them interesting,

it would depend on how I write the script and how I do the video,

the editing, so on, so on.

So after that, I started thinking about this system.

And it took me a long time to think about the system because it's a bit of a commitment.

Like I thought, okay, when I start this system,

I want to do this system for at least six months, right?

Or maybe a year.

And if it's successful, then I will just keep on using it.

But basically for the last two months that I haven't uploaded,

I was thinking about the system I would create to make videos in a way that makes sense.

So to think of this system,

I put myself in the shoes of a learner, a language learner.

And I study French like,

well, I studied French when I was in school.

I don't really study anymore,

but I'm about low intermediate,

high beginner level in French.

So I thought, okay, I'll start learning some French on YouTube and I'll see like which videos do I find interesting,

which videos do I think are useful,

and what videos would I want to see as a learner.

So I started learning French on YouTube.

I started watching French teaching channels.

There was even a channel that had a podcast like this one,

like a slow French podcast.

And while I was listening to it,

I realized like, wow, this is why people really like to listen to my podcast

because when you're listening to another language

and you understand it like it just feels really good right it feels like wow well like I'm learning

and I can understand it so I must be doing something right making some progress right

and so that clicked and then there were some other videos as well about like how to do certain things in French.

And when I was learning,

I realized, okay, yes, you know,

there are videos about vocabulary,

there are videos about this and that,

but there weren't many videos showing me how to like actually communicate.

Because in a podcast, just one person is talking, right?

And there's not a conversation.

And conversational language is different than just having a monologue like this.

I mean, in some ways it's different, right?

But again, English is English.

French is French.

If you learn English, then it's English.

Whatever English you learn here,

you can use for IELTS,

you can use for daily life,

but I felt like I wanted some videos specifically for communicating.

So Learning French gave me a few ideas on what to put into my video making system.

I also read keynotes from a book called Make It Stick

and this book Make It stick was all about how people learn things and remember them long term.

And in this book, the three main ideas were retrieval practice.

So for example, if you are studying something,

let's say you are studying medicine,

and in medicine, you have to memorize a lot of things, right?

So this book said that it's better if you can pull that information out of your memory instead of rereading your notes.

So you have to think of the answer or you have to pull that information out instead of simply reviewing it.

And that was one of the main points because when you have to think,

the harder it is to remember something,

the better you remember it.

and the better you learn it.

So that was the first thing, retrieval practice.

The second thing was spaced repetition,

which I think most people know that,

you know, you learn something and then you take a break for a few days

or a few weeks and then you learn it again,

not just learning everything in the same day and then not learning again.

And then the third one was variability.

So not just doing the same thing again and again and again.

So I applied those things that I learned into creating my system

and the result was for my video system I want to release videos in sets of three.

So for example I'll think of a topic.

Let's say the topic is Well,

the topic I'm working on now is jobs and career.

So let's say I think of this topic.

The topic is jobs and career.

So then I will make a set of three videos about that topic.

And the set goes like this.

The first video is how to talk about that topic.

So basically I will give very common phrases and vocabulary words

that will help you have a foundation to talk about that topic.

And this video is in Vietnamese,

but of course the vocabulary words and the phrases are in English and the examples are in English.

And the purpose of this video is to give you a foundation of this topic.

So you learn the really important words and phrases that we often use for that topic.

The second video is the podcast.

Don't worry, I'm not cutting out the podcast.

It's definitely here to stay.

and the purpose of the podcast is for you to hear the words

that you learned in the previous video plus more words

and it's also a way for me to connect with you guys

because in the podcast I will talk about real things like in my life

and I think it'll be a fun way for us to connect

and for you guys to learn daily life English and practice your listening skills.

And then the third video would be speak with me practice.

So the third video is a practice conversation that of course is realistic

and something that could happen out in the real world about that topic.

So again, to recap, the first video teaches vocabulary and phrases

that are very common about the topic and how to talk about that topic.

The second video is a podcast that is related to that topic,

so you can learn more words and practice your listening skills.

And the third video is when you practice speaking,

when you actually practice using the things that you learned from the other two videos.

And if I release one video per week,

it would be like the first video is the how-to one week,

so you learn it.

And then the next video is the podcast.

And then the third video is the practice speaking.

And so one video per week over three weeks.

So to me, I thought,

okay, that covers all of the main points for how people learn.

Because firstly, it has spaced repetition, right?

Because you're learning it each week.

It's not all in one video in the same week.

Two, it's varied.

there's different types of videos and different skills.

And three, the retrieval practice will be in the PDFs that I give with the videos.

So retrieval practice is something that will take your effort, right?

This is something that you will have to do if you want to.

But again, language learning is largely just input, input.

And I want to give you guys a lot of input

so you can learn and then practice speaking in the third video.

So that is basically the system that I made and that I will be doing in the future.

I just filmed the how-to first video of the new series

and then I will be doing the podcast and the speaking video so you can expect those.

So basically that leads into what you guys can expect in 2024 from What's Up English

that I really believe will help you learn English is me releasing videos in this way.

And I think it's great because firstly,

it'll make the videos organized and it will help you guys learn.

But also it'll help me in the process of making videos

so I don't have to think so much about what video is coming next,

How am I going to do it?

What will it be about?

And that way I can finally release a new video,

a high quality video each week that I really think that you guys will enjoy and will be useful.

And to be completely honest with you guys,

I think still the podcast is going to be the main video

that people watch simply because a podcast is just so convenient, right?

You can just listen to it.

You can be doing the dishes.

You can be doing chores,

doing whatever, and just getting English, English in your brain.

And so I still believe out of the three videos in the set,

the podcast will be the number one video for every set.

But that's okay, because for people who want to learn just vocabulary,

and they need to learn the foundation,

because maybe their level is not quite too high yet,

then they can just watch those videos.

And if they just want to practice speaking,

and so there's there's something for everybody and it will be organized
