2
This is the story of three plastic bottles, empty and discarded.
3
Their journeys are about to diverge,
4
with outcomes that impact nothing less than the fate of the planet.
5
But they weren't always this way.
6
To understand where these bottles end up,
7
we must first explore their origins.
8
The heroes of our story were conceived in this oil refinery,
9
The plastic in their bodies was formed by chemically bonding oil and gas molecules together to make monomers.
10
In turn, these monomers were bonded into long polymer chains to make plastic,
11
in the form of millions of pellets.
12
Those were melted at manufacturing plants and reformed in molds to create the resilient material that makes up the triplets' bodies.
13
Machines filled the bottles with sweet,
14
bubbly liquid, and they were then wrapped,
15
shipped, bought, opened, consumed, and unceremoniously discarded.
16
And now here they lie,
17
poised at the edge of the unknown.
18
Bottle One, like hundreds of millions of tons of his plastic brethren,
19
ends up in a landfill.
20
This huge dump expands each day as more trash comes in and continues to take up space.
21
The plastics sit there, being compressed amongst layers of other junk.
22
Rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains,
23
and some of those are highly toxic.
24
Together, they create a harmful stew called leachate,
25
which can move into groundwater,
26
soil, and streams, poisoning ecosystems and harming wildlife.
27
It can take bottle one and agonizing 1,000 years to decompose.
28
Bottle 2's journey is stranger, but unfortunately no happier.
29
He floats on a trickle that reaches a stream,
30
a stream that flows into a river,
31
and a river that reaches the ocean.
32
After months lost at sea,
33
he's slowly drawn into a massive vortex where trash accumulates,
34
a place known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
35
Here, the ocean's currents have trapped millions of pieces of plastic debris.
36
This is one of five plastic-filled gyres in the world's seas,
37
places where the pollutants turn the water into a cloudy plastic soup.
38
Some animals, like seabirds, get entangled in the mess.
39
They and others mistake the brightly colored plastic bits for food.
40
Plastic makes them feel full when they're not,
41
so they starve to death and pass the toxins from the plastic up the food chain.
42
For example, it's eaten by lanternfish,
43
the lanternfish are eaten by squid,
44
the squid are eaten by tuna,
45
and the tuna are eaten by us.
46
And most plastics don't biodegrade,
47
which means they're destined to break down into smaller and smaller pieces called microplastics,
48
which might rotate in the sea eternally.
49
But bottle three is spared the cruel purgatories of his brothers.
50
A truck brings him to a plank where he and his companions are squeezed flat and compressed into a block.
51
Okay, this sounds pretty bad,
52
too, but hang in there.
53
It gets better.
54
The blocks are shredded into tiny pieces,
55
which are washed and melted,
56
so they become the raw materials that can be used again.
57
As if by magic, Bottle 3 is now ready to be reborn as something completely new.
58
For this bit of plastic with such humble origins,
59
suddenly the sky is the limit.

Why practice speaking with this video?

Practicing speaking with Emma Bryce's video, "What really happens to the plastic you throw away," offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in real-world environmental issues while honing your English speaking skills. Engaging with the compelling narratives of the three plastic bottles allows you to connect emotionally with the content, making your practice more meaningful. By employing shadow speak techniques, you can mimic Bryce's intonation and pacing, which not only enhances your listening abilities but also boosts your pronunciation and fluency. Additionally, discussing the topic of plastic waste and environmental impact encourages deeper conversation skills, making your English practice not just about language but about global awareness.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

  • Passive Voice: The video often uses passive constructions like "were conceived in this oil refinery," emphasizing actions without specifying the doer. This structure shifts focus, allowing learners to practice passive forms effectively.
  • Compound Sentences: Emma frequently combines short, impactful sentences into complex ones, such as "The plastics sit there, being compressed amongst layers of other junk." This illustrates how to link ideas and improve sentence flow, aiding in developing a conversational tone.
  • Descriptive Language: Vivid adjectives and phrases like "cloudy plastic soup" enrich the narrative, helping learners understand how imagery can enhance communication. Adopting such descriptive expressions can make your speaking more engaging.
  • Conditional Sentences: The video mentions potential outcomes with phrases like "if they’re eaten, the toxins pass up the food chain.” This is an excellent opportunity for learners to practice forming conditional clauses, which are crucial for discussing hypothetical situations.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice shadow speech with this video, pay attention to some tricky words that may pose challenges:

  • Ecosystem: This term can often be mispronounced as "eco-system" instead of the correct syllable breakdown, "e-co-sys-tem."
  • Decompose: Learners sometimes forget the subtle 'd' sound at the beginning, leading to mispronunciation as "compose." Ensure clarity by voicing the initial sound accurately.
  • Absorbs: This becomes tricky with the ‘z’ sound at the end, which is often pronounced too gently; it should be more emphasized, sounding like "ab-sorbz."
  • Leachate: This term is less common and may confuse learners. Remember the pronunciation as "lee-chate," stressing both syllables equally.

By focusing on these pronunciation elements and integrating them into your shadowing practice, you can significantly improve English pronunciation and enhance your overall speaking confidence.
