Pratique du Shadowing: Why carbon? It's the backbone of life! - Suzanne Simard | UBC Earth Day - Apprendre l'anglais à l'oral avec la vidéo

1
Why carbon, right?
2
Well, carbon is the backbone of life.
3
We're made of carbon.
4
We're made of proteins and carbohydrates and, you know, all of the molecules in us have carbon in them.
5
Same thing in all living systems, forest ecosystems.
6
That's because through photosynthesis, which takes CO2 from the atmosphere, combines it with water from the soil and creates these sugars
7
and proteins that build trees and plants and feeds the whole food web.
8
And the reason that we're interested in carbon right now is
9
because we have emitted too much to the atmosphere and it's warming our atmosphere.
10
That emission comes from, you know, basically fossil fuels, but also land use change.
11
And scientists estimate that about 80% comes from burning fossil fuels, oil and gas, and 20% from land use change, which includes forestry, agriculture.
12
I think that it's an underestimate of what land use change is contributing
13
because we never understood how damaging it is to the soil.
14
You know, we're losing way more carbon from the soil, which are big things.
15
In Canada, 95% of carbon is in our soil pools.
16
So it's super important that we protect that, and I think we're emitting far more to the atmosphere from land use change, including forestry, than we ever thought.
17
So protecting it is really important and getting it back into these ecosystems through regenerative forestry, regenerative practices is super important.

About This Lesson

In this lesson, we will explore the critical role of carbon in our ecosystems and its impact on the environment, as discussed by Suzanne Simard in her Earth Day presentation. Learners will engage in English speaking practice by reflecting on her insights regarding carbon emissions and land use change. This lesson not only aims to enhance your vocabulary but also to improve your fluency through context-related discussions. By the end of this lesson, you will be better equipped to articulate your thoughts about environmental issues, a topic that is increasingly relevant in today's world.

Key Vocabulary & Phrases

  • Carbon - an essential element that forms the basis of all living matter.
  • Photosynthesis - the process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
  • Emissions - gases released into the atmosphere, particularly from fossil fuels.
  • Land use change - the alteration of how land is used, significantly affecting soil carbon levels.
  • Regenerative practices - methods that aim to restore and maintain ecosystems and soil health.
  • Food web - the interconnected network of food chains in an ecosystem.
  • Soil pools - reserves of carbon stored in the soil.

Practice Tips

When practicing with this video, consider the following tips to enhance your speaking skills:

  • Shadowing: Try shadow speech techniques. Listen to a short segment of the video and then repeat it aloud immediately after. Mimicking the speaker’s tone and pace will help you develop your speaking fluency.
  • Focus on Intonation: Pay attention to the intonation and rhythm used by the speaker. This practice is essential not only for IELTS speaking practice but also to make your spoken English feel more natural.
  • Slow it Down: If the video feels too fast, use playback settings to slow down the speed. This makes it easier to grasp complex ideas and vocabulary while still engaging in effective learn English with YouTube methods.
  • Practice with a Partner: Consider finding a study partner to practice with. Discuss the key vocabulary and phrases together, which will help reinforce your understanding and speaking skills.
  • Utilize a Shadowing App: If you want to enhance your practice, consider using a shadowing app that allows for repeated listening and recording your speech for self-assessment.

By incorporating these practices, you will not only improve your English speaking skills but also gain a deeper understanding of critical environmental concepts discussed in the video.
