Real IELTS Speaking Questions — Shadow Them Today

Below are real examiner-style questions for each Part with Band 7+ model answers and intonation tips. Practise each one with the shadowing player to copy the rhythm exactly.

Part 1: Introduction & Interview

4–5 minutes

The examiner asks short, familiar questions about you — home, work, study, hobbies, daily life. Answers should be 2–4 sentences with natural intonation.

Do you live in a house or an apartment?

Band 7+ Model Answer

I live in a small apartment in the city centre. It's quite compact, but it has everything I need — a cosy bedroom, a kitchen, and a balcony where I grow a few plants. I really enjoy living there because it's close to my workplace.

🎙 Intonation tip:Stress the content words: 'small apartment', 'city centre', 'cosy', 'close to my workplace'. Let function words like 'a', 'the', 'is' fade naturally.

What do you usually do at the weekends?

Band 7+ Model Answer

Well, it depends. On Saturdays I often catch up with friends — we might grab brunch or watch a movie. On Sundays I prefer to stay home, read a book, and recharge for the week ahead.

🎙 Intonation tip:Use a falling tone on 'depends', then rising-then-falling on the two contrasting weekends. Examiners reward varied intonation.

Do you enjoy cooking?

Band 7+ Model Answer

Honestly, I'm not the best cook, but I do enjoy experimenting now and then. I usually stick to simple recipes — pasta, stir-fries, that sort of thing. Cooking helps me unwind after a long day.

🎙 Intonation tip:'Honestly' opens with a fall in pitch — sounds authentic. Stretch the vowel in 'unwind' for a natural, conversational feel.

Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

3–4 minutes (1 min prep + 2 min talk)

You receive a cue card with a topic and 3–4 prompts. You speak for up to 2 minutes without interruption. The trick: pace yourself with clear discourse markers.

Describe a place you have visited that you would recommend to others. You should say: where it is, when you went there, what you did there, and why you would recommend it.

Band 7+ Model Answer

I'd like to talk about Da Nang, a coastal city in central Vietnam. I went there with my family last summer for about a week. What struck me most was the balance between modern beaches and ancient temples just outside the city. During our stay, we spent mornings swimming at My Khe beach, afternoons exploring the Marble Mountains, and evenings strolling along the Dragon Bridge. The food was outstanding — bun cha ca was the highlight. I'd thoroughly recommend Da Nang because it offers something for everyone — adventure, history, food, and relaxation — without the crowds you'd find in larger tourist hubs.

🎙 Intonation tip:Use signposting: 'I'd like to talk about…', 'What struck me most…', 'During our stay…', 'I'd thoroughly recommend…'. These earn marks for Coherence & Cohesion.

Part 3: Discussion (Abstract Questions)

4–5 minutes

The examiner asks broader, more abstract questions linked to the Part 2 topic. This is where Band 7+ candidates separate themselves with complex grammar and nuanced opinions.

Why do you think people enjoy travelling so much these days?

Band 7+ Model Answer

There are several reasons, I'd say. First and foremost, travel has become far more affordable thanks to budget airlines and online booking platforms. Beyond that, social media plays a huge role — people are constantly exposed to stunning destinations, which fuels their wanderlust. And on a deeper level, I think modern life can feel quite repetitive, so travel offers an escape and a chance to reset.

🎙 Intonation tip:Use complex linkers: 'First and foremost…', 'Beyond that…', 'On a deeper level…'. Show range with idiomatic vocabulary like 'wanderlust' and 'fuels'.

How has tourism changed in your country over the past few decades?

Band 7+ Model Answer

It's transformed dramatically. A few decades ago, tourism in my country was relatively limited — mostly domestic travellers visiting iconic landmarks. Nowadays, we're seeing a massive influx of international visitors, and entire regions have been redeveloped to cater to them. While this has boosted the economy considerably, it has also raised concerns about over-tourism and the loss of local character in some areas.

🎙 Intonation tip:Use a clear contrast structure: 'A few decades ago… Nowadays… While this has… it has also…'. Band 7+ candidates always show both sides.

IELTS Speaking FAQ

Can I really reach Band 7+ Speaking without a private tutor?

+

Yes — provided you commit to daily shadowing practice. A tutor primarily corrects your pronunciation and intonation. Our AI does that for you in real time, sentence by sentence. Thousands of learners have hit Band 7.0+ purely with self-study using shadowing.

How long should I practise each day before my test?

+

20–30 focused minutes per day for at least 4–6 weeks. Consistency matters far more than session length. Five 30-minute sessions per week beats one 4-hour session.

What makes shadowing better than just memorising answers?

+

Memorised answers sound robotic — examiners are trained to spot them and will penalise you. Shadowing trains the muscle memory of natural English: stress, rhythm, intonation, linking. When you shadow enough, spontaneous answers come out sounding native, not scripted.

Which IELTS Part is hardest, and how does this tool help?

+

Part 3 — abstract discussion — trips up most candidates because they switch from natural conversation to stiff, textbook phrases. Shadowing native examiner discussions teaches you the discourse markers and hedging language that fluent speakers use ('I'd say…', 'On the one hand…', 'That said…').

Does the tool work for IELTS Academic and IELTS General?

+

Yes. The Speaking module is identical in both. Our question bank covers all topic clusters that appear in both versions.

Is it free?

+

The web version is 100% free with unlimited practice — no credit card required. The mobile app has a small premium tier for offline use ($5/year or $10 lifetime).
