Hi everybody, welcome to a new episode of Easy English.
2
So after a long time away, we're finally back in the UK.
3
So I thought I'd quickly nip into Brighton and ask a simple question to the people wandering around.
4
What are you up to today?
5
Before we get started, if you're someone who frequently watches Easy English, then I'd personally love it if you'd quickly subscribe to us below to be notified about new episodes.
6
So, let's head into Brighton.
7
Here we go.
8
What are you two up to today in Brighton?
9
We're just shopping mostly.
10
Just heading around.
11
We're trying to find a thrift shop at the moment.
12
What are you two up to today in Brighton?
13
We are just on our lunch break.
14
We're going to get some sushi actually.
15
Can you tell me what you're up to today in Brighton?
16
We are just wasting a day basically waiting for a ferry.
17
What are you up to in Brighton today?
18
Just wandering aimlessly around the lanes today.
19
So we're here for the beach obviously I think everyone kind of comes to Brighton for the beach but we're en route now to an Italian restaurant and we're here for a concert so we've stayed effectively for the weekend and we're going to enjoy a nice pop concert in chalk just down the road so it's not far from here but generally enjoying the sun where we live is very poor weather at the minute so we've come for a bit of an escape I think it's probably how to round ended up a getaway.
20
What are you up to in Brighton today?
21
So we come to Brighton today to visit with my niece and my sister who are over from France.
22
We're going down the lanes doing some shopping now we're heading off to the beach just had something to eat probably get a snack on the on the way back and then we'll drive back to Kent which is where I live.
23
So I'm with my boyfriend at the moment who is just out of frame because he didn't want to be in the interview and heckling from the side yeah um we just went to the hello kitty cafe um we had some food and now i think we're going to we're pottery painting um and then after that yeah i'm not sure can you explain what a thrift shop is um it's like a shop with second hand items mostly clothing yeah there's a vegan sushi restaurant there so that's where we're going okay do you go there often yeah it's my when i want a nice lunch yeah exactly and it feels like one of those days to get a treat yeah and what's your order um i get to do sushi burritos so it's like a burrito yeah with sushi but it's all vegan so i normally get they have a wrap which is like sesame chicken but it's not real chicken um yeah that's what i'm gonna order probably i actually haven't decided yet so maybe i'll just figure it out once i get there okay are there some behind us happy mackey yeah that's where we're I'm going.
24
I'm going.
25
Really?
26
Yeah, we're getting a nine o'clock ferry over to Santander and we had a day to kind of kill.
27
So we thought we'd come to Brighton do a bit of shopping looking around browsing for old books oh wow you've come to the best place to look for old stuff I bought some fabulous fabric as well and I've seen there's two shops I need to go back in and have a look at fabrics because I sew so I love sewing okay great and what are the lanes?
28
Just a bunch of colourful shops that are fairly famous in Brighton.
29
I think most of it's vintage but also I think people just walk around to be near them.
30
Not even to actually shops, just to be in the environment of Brighton, I guess.
31
A bit to unpack there.
32
So first of all, whereabouts are you coming from?
33
So we live in Wales.
34
We're coming from Cardiff, so it's the capital of Wales.
35
Okay.
36
And do you have a Welsh accent?
37
I do, I think I do.
38
I think we have slightly different versions of a Welsh accent.
39
You're not from the south?
40
No, I'm from Liverpool in the northwest of England, but I live in Kent now.
41
I left Liverpool when I was about 18 years old.
42
And how does the south compare to up north?
43
It's warmer.
44
It's definitely warmer, more sunshine, it's more expensive, definitely more expensive.
45
And next you're off to pottery class.
46
Yes, we're pottery painting.
47
Pottery painting?
48

62
They're coffee shopping but they love it here.
63
So they've been, I think, thrift shopping.
64
I see, right?
65
Students.
66
And whereabouts do you live then?
67
On the Isle of Wight.
68
Oh wow, okay.
69
Yeah, yeah.
70
Wow, so you've come from the Isle of Wight to Brighton.
71
So we had to get a really early ferry this morning because of the Isle of Wight festival.
72
We couldn't get booked on any decent travel time.
73
So we had to get a 6.30 boat and then we had a day to kill till our nine o'clock ferry.
74
Do you live in Brighton?
75
No, I live South London.
76
OK.
77
Yeah.
78
How long are you down for?
79
What's that?
80
Sorry.
81
How long are you down in Brighton for?
82
Just a weekend, three days.
83
But my girlfriend went to uni here, so she's kind of I come here a couple of times, but she showed me, showed me around.
84
Yeah.
85
Nice.
86
And how often have you been to Brighton before?
87
I've never.
88
Yeah.
89
Well, OK, nice.
90
And how are you thinking?
91
How are you making of it?
92
Yeah, loving it.
93
My favourite bird is a seagull, so there's a lot of that around.
94
So I'm quite happy.
95
Nice.
96
Other than that, it's very welcoming, I think.
97
It's quite diverse, isn't it?
98
It's quite rich with lots of different kinds of people and what people are doing.
99
So I think there's plenty to see here if you're thinking of coming around.
100
And have you been to Brighton before?
101
Yes, because my daughter was at university in Brighton for a few years, so I was down here quite a lot.
102
And how do you like it?
103
I love Brighton.
104
Yeah, I love the place.
105
And are you from Brighton?
106
I'm from Canterbury in Kent originally, but I've lived in Brighton for like four years now, I wanna say, yeah, I moved here for uni and I actually got my uni results today, passed.
107
Got my degree, got a two-one, very happy with that but yeah I'm just gonna try and live here as long as I can because I like it.
108
Oh really you'd like to stay?
109
Yeah I love Brighton it's really really nice.
110
Where are you going for food in a minute?
111
Ask Italian.
112
Yeah we've got a voucher so we've got the money off.
113
It's okay.
114
Ask Italian is pretty good anyway even if you don't have a voucher I think.
115
know and uh out of interest what are you watching you're what you're going to a concert we are we're going to watch an artist called peach prc i think she's quite relatively niche in the sense of of music but she just makes fun music you know queer based music so we're gonna have a good time and you get a nice long lunch break we get an hour an hour so we're just like it's like a grab and go situation i won't keep being longer than later Thank you.
116
And would you do something like window shopping?
117
I think that's mostly what I do to be honest.
118
Even when I'm inside the shop, I barely like part the clothes.
119
I just look at the corner of them and then it's pretty much window shopping the whole way.
120
Yeah, mostly like browsing, right?
121
Yeah.
122
And is that something you like to do quite often then?
123
I do it quite often to be fair.
124
I'd say that if I'm going shopping, it's mostly window shopping or I've chosen a specific thing I'm looking for.
125
and if I don't see a smidge of what that thing is, then it's just onto the next part.
126
So you have a 9pm ferry from where though?
127
Not from Brighton.
128
From Portsmouth.
129
Oh, so you're going back to it?
130
Yeah, back to Portsmouth.
131
So it's a little bit random, but I didn't want to go to Southampton or Portsmouth.
132
I wanted to go further afield and Winchester, we know like the back of our hands.
133
So I thought Brighton.
134
Wow.
135
So I guess you're getting like an overnight sleeper ferry.
136
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
137
walk our legs off today and basically put them up tomorrow on the ferry.
138
Oh my god, you're going to be knackered.
139
Yeah, I think so.
140
And how long is the ferry?
141
About 30 hours.
142
Oh, okay, so over a couple of days.
143
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
144
Amazing.
145
So we land in Spain on Wednesday morning.
146
Wow, well have a great time.
147
Thank you.
148
And how does Brighton compare to your home, to Cardiff?
149
Nothing beats where we're from, I don't think.
150
I think I'll always have a connection to that place, but it's always good to see different things.
151
This is our first step of travelling really.
152
We're gonna go broader obviously later on We're actually planning to go on a trip to Japan in a few years for our shared big birthdays So wait, you know, it's all in the works, but we're easing into it at the moment.
153
Yeah.
154
Yeah, nice.
155
Great I hope you have a good time.
156
Thank you.
157
