1
Welcome back to The Learning Lab, another episode of the Learn English Easy podcast, where English is easy and enjoyable.
2
I am Lily.
3
And I am Ethan.
4
Thanks for joining us today, everyone.
5
Today is a big day, like a really, really big day.
6
We are starting something huge, something that could actually change the way you speak English forever.
7
It is a very big day.
8
But first, if you are new here, please hit that subscribe button right now.
9
Seriously, do it.
10
Stop what you are doing, move your finger to that button and click it.
11
It takes two seconds and it means the world to us.
12
Exactly.
13
Move that finger and click it.
14
Okay, I am calm now.
15
Lily, are you ready for this?
16
I am ready, Ethan.
17
But you know, you say every episode is a big day.
18
Last week, you said learning the word nevertheless was a big day.
19
It was a big day.
20
That word is incredible.
21
Nevertheless.
22
Say it with me, listeners.
23
Nevertheless.
24
Okay, I know, I know.
25
But Lily, come on.
26
Today really is different.
27
Tell them what we are doing for the next 30 days.
28
Okay, everyone.
29
For the next 30 days, we are going to practice something called shadowing.
30
If you have never heard of shadowing before, do not worry.
31
That is exactly why we are here today.
32
We are going to explain everything from the very beginning, nice and slow, nice and simple.
33
So just relax and let us learn together.
34
Yes, and the best part is you do not need a classroom, you do not need a teacher sitting next to you, and you do not need expensive books or special tools.
35
You just need your ears, your mouth, and a little bit of courage.
36
That is it.
37
Three things.
38
Ears, mouth, courage.
39
You already have all three.
40
Well, maybe a phone or a computer, too, to actually hear the audio.
41
Right, right, yes, okay, four things.
42
Ears, mouth, courage, and a device.
43
But you already have that, too, because you are watching this video, so you're already winning.
44
Ethan has this amazing ability to make everything sound like you have already won a prize just by showing up.
45
Because you have!
46
Showing up is half the battle, Lily, half the battle.
47
Okay, so let us get into it.
48
Lily, what exactly is shadowing?
49
Can you break it down for us? Of course.
50
Shadowing is a language learning technique, and it has been around for a long time.
51
It was first made popular by a language teacher named Alexander Arguez back in the 1990s.
52
The idea is actually very simple.
53
You listen to someone speaking in your target language, in our case English, and you repeat what they say at almost exactly the same time.
54
Like an echo.
55
Exactly.
56
Like an echo or like a shadow.
57
That is why it is called shadowing.
58
You follow right behind the speaker, copying their voice, their rhythm, their pronunciation, everything.
59
I love that.
60
You are like their shadow.
61
You know how when you walk in the sun and your shadow is right there behind you, copying every move you make?
62
That is exactly what you are doing with the speaker's voice.
63
You are the shadow of their English.
64
And honestly, when I first heard about this technique, I was like, wait, that sounds too simple.
65
It sounds almost like cheating.
66
How can just copying someone's voice actually teach you a language?
67
And that is a really great question, Ethan.
68
I think a lot of people feel the same way at first.
69
Because we're used to thinking that learning a language means studying grammar rules, memorizing vocabulary lists, and doing exercises in a workbook.
70
All of those things have value.
71
They really do.
72
But shadowing works differently.
73
It works more like the way a child learns to speak.
74
Oh, I love this.
75
Explain this because I think this is so important.
76
Right.
77
So think about a baby.
78
A little baby learning to speak for the first time.
79
Does that baby open a grammar book?
80
Does the baby study the difference between I am and I was?
81
No. The baby listens.
82
All day, Every day, the baby is just listening to the people around them.
83
And then slowly, the baby starts to copy the sounds.
84
And they get it wrong at first.
85
Yes, they get it wrong.
86
They say things in a funny way.
87
They mix up words.
88
But nobody gives them a grade.
89
Nobody tells them they failed.
90
They just keep trying.
91
And slowly, slowly, it clicks.
92
And suddenly, the baby is talking.
93
And this is basically what shadowing lets you do as an adult learner.
94
It gives your mouth a chance to feel the language.
95
Because here is something people do not always think about.
96
Speaking a language is actually a physical skill.
97
Your mouth, your tongue, your lips, they need to practice making new sounds.
98
That is so true.
99
If you only ever study English in your head, your mouth never gets that practice.
100
It is like reading about how to ride a bicycle.
101
You can read every book about bicycles in the world, but until you actually get on the bike and start moving, you do not learn how to ride.
102
That is a really good analogy, Ethan.
103
Thank you.
104
I'm proud of that one.
105
The research on shadowing is actually really interesting.
106
There have been several studies, especially in Japan and South Korea, where a lot of English learners have used this technique.
107
These studies show that shadowing can significantly improve pronunciation, listening skills, and even speaking fluency in a relatively short time.
108
And 30 days is a silent amount of time to start seeing real changes.
109
30 days.
110
Which is why we are doing this challenge.
111
Every single day for 30 days, we are going to practice together.
112
Each episode, just like today, is going to be a session you can actually follow along with.
113
We will explain, we will model, and we will shadow together.
114
By the end of 30 days, I genuinely believe your English is going to sound different, better more natural, more confident.
115
And I want to be honest with you listeners.
116
It is not magic.
117
You do have to actually practice.
118
Watching the video is not enough.
119
You have to open your mouth.
120
You have to make the sounds, even if it feels weird, even if it feels embarrassing,
121
even if you are sitting alone in your room and you feel a little bit silly talking to your phone.
122
That is totally normal, by the way.
123
Oh, completely normal.
124
I still feel silly sometimes, and English is my first language.
125
Okay, so before we actually start our first shadowing practice today, I want to talk about how to shadow correctly,
126
because there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it.
127
Yes, there are a few key things to keep in mind.
128
The first one, and this is really important, is that you need to shadow out loud.
129
Not in your head, not in a whisper, out loud, full voice.
130
The whole point is to train your mouth and your ears together.
131
So give yourself permission to be loud.
132
Close the door if you need to.
133
Tell your family, I am practicing English.
134
Please do not come in.
135
Whatever you need to do, just get that voice out.
136
Seriously, your neighbors might think something is happening in your house, but that is okay.
137
You are learning English.
138
That is more important.
139
The second thing is do not worry about understanding every single word at first.
140
This is really different from normal studying.
141
When we read or listen to English, usually we try to understand the meaning of everything.
142
But with shadowing, your first job is just to copy the sounds, the rhythm, and the melody of the sentence.
143
Meaning comes later.
144
Sound comes first.
145
This one was hard for me to accept when I first started teaching shadowing because students always want to stop and ask, wait, what does that word mean?
146
And I have to tell them, not yet.
147
Keep going.
148
Just let the sounds come out of your mouth.
149
You can think about meaning after, but when you are shadowing, stay in the flow.
150
Right.
151
And the third thing is, start slow.
152
Don't try to shadow fast, complicated native speech on day one.
153
That would be like trying to run a marathon on the very first day of exercise.
154
You would hurt yourself.
155
So we always start simple, clear speech, normal speed, common vocabulary.
156
Exactly what you are hearing right now, actually.
157
Which is perfect because the way Ethan and I speak in this show, we do it on purpose.
158
We speak clearly, we use simple words, and we do not rush.
159
So this podcast is a great thing to practice shadowing with, which is the whole point of this series.
160
Exactly.
161
This whole 30-day series is designed so that you can shadow right along with us.
162
Each episode is going to have practice sections where we slow things down even more
163
and we give you time to repeat after us.
164
It is not just listening.
165
It is participating.
166
You are part of the show.
167
You are a star.
168
Okay, let us talk about one more thing before we do our first actual practice, and that is the mindset.
169
Mindset is honestly the most important part of any language learning journey.
170
I want to say something to everyone listening right now, especially if you feel shy about your English, or if you have tried to improve before and it did not work,
171
or if you have given up in the past.
172
I want you to hear this clearly.
173
It is okay.
174
It is completely okay.
175
Learning a language as an adult is genuinely hard.
176
It is one of the hardest things a human brain can do.
177
If you have struggled before, that does not mean you are bad at languages.
178
It might just mean you have not found the right method yet.
179
That is such an important point.
180
A lot of adult learners carry around this feeling that they are just not good at English.
181
Like it is something fixed about them, something they were born with or without.
182
But that is not how the brain works.
183
The brain is flexible.
184
It can learn new things at any age.
185
What matters most is consistency and the right kind of practice.
186
And that is exactly what we are building here together over these 30 days.
187
30 days of showing up.
188
That is all we are asking.
189
You do not have to be perfect.
190
You do not have to get every sound right.
191
You just have to show up every day and try.
192
That is the deal.
193
All right.
194
Are we ready to do our first practice?
195
I am so ready.
196
Okay, everyone, here is what we are going to do.
197
I am going to say some simple sentences.
198
Nice and clear.
199
Nice and slow.
200
And I want you, yes you, to say them out loud right after me.
201
Don't wait.
202
Don't think too much.
203
Just listen and repeat.
204
Ready?
205
Let us start.
206
I will say each sentence two times.
207
You say it after me.
208
I am learning English every day.
209
I am learning English every day.
210
Good.
211
Now you say it.
212
Say it out loud.
213
Don't be shy.
214
My English is getting better and better.
215
My English is getting better and better.
216
Oh, I love that one.
217
Say it like you mean it, because it is true.
218
It is getting better.
219
Keep going.
