Music We
2
spent about a week just going over riffs and arranging them
3
and getting some sort of songs in a semblance of order just so Mark had something to write lyrics to.
4
They usually, it's kind of funny when the way they assemble things, they work in a very old fashioned way of, and a good way actually,
5
of writing things around the vocal ideas and if they've got strong vocal melody or guitar melody they'll base it around, you know, the song around that
6
and it's not just riffs crammed together kind of like what
7
a lot of thrash acts do it's an older way of writing
8
so they'll have a basic song in you know we're end
9
up with a you know a pretty standard structure a lot of the time
10
and then they'll go away
11
and Peter tends to work on the vocal patterns we call it Peter easy mate he's got this language
12
that he random words that he sings sort of syllables and you know vowels that sound good
13
It's a way they really used to write in the olden days when their English wasn't that good they'd write certain phrases,
14
hence, you know, was it icicle brains, bicycle chains, you know, they just thought it sounded good and because they were German they got away with it.
15
Erm...
16
So yeah, they've got this way of sort of assembling ideas
17
and it slowly all comes together and then once you've got this idea with Peter doing a vocal pass on it
18
with certain timing and you know where he's starting pitch wise, then Mark will listen to it and get an idea for lyrics
19
and come in and you know they'll sort of you know bash these ideas out.
20
And we got quite good sort of head start on it this time.
21
With the Stalingrad album it was all a bit pushed
22
because they'd just come off the blood the nation's tour
23
and we've got to get another album out quick to make it work with schedules
24
and with this one we gave ourselves plenty of time um for the band to go away
25
and assess things and we had we probably had about 18 18
26
or 19 songs in in a really good shape for for this record um
27
which meant we could really cherry pick and you know pick the songs that we felt made a very complete album.
28
There's a few sort of, not disagreements, but few different ideas of where certain songs should go.
29
But there's always going to be that with a lot of creative forces there.
30
And at the end of the day it's down to what Wolf and Peter want on these things really.
31
They're the reason that XCEP's got a certain character.
32
You've got to let a band go with their ideas at the end of the day, even if I've got a certain idea or other members have got certain ideas.
