Hello fellow Scratchers!
2
What kind of game comes to mind when I say, every move matters?
3
Well that was this month's Game Jam theme in the Griffpatch Academy,
4
and you guys didn't disappoint with your submissions.
5
Now we're going to have a lot of fun exploring what you created,
6
and deciding on the winners.
7
And we'll begin with the Arcade Games.
8
This category was as popular as ever, loads of entries.
9
I've left a comment under each and every submitted project,
10
but before I reveal the finalists.
11
I want to give a special mention to Spew for creating a cool level selection world map,
12
Tanqr for clever use of scene hitboxes,
13
and the Gamerboy for their well balanced level progression,
14
and Kingpuff for their excellent art style and super fun difficult gameplay.
15
Love that.
16
Ok guys, let's see our finalists,
17
beginning with 3 returning champions.
18
Airtype by AdrianSood22.
19
Type the letter to fly,
20
if you fall off the screen you die.
21
A very well presented game that goes a long way to helping you improve your keyboard knowledge.
22
So I would have filed this under casual games if it wasn't so infuriatingly fast paced.
23
Wow, you really have to be good at finding those keys.
24
I love the minimalist art and smooth UI.
25
And those little wiggling legs.
26
Excellent, it's the little details right?
27
Next up, Pyromaniac by Not A School Account.
28
You leave a trail of fire behind you.
29
Don't run into it.
30
These handcrafted sprite costumes are simply amazing,
31
so colourful, adorable and delightfully animated.
32
Each enemy has two stages of development.
33
For example, the wood catches fire and the corn pops.
34
It's so clever.
35
I can't help but admire how tastefully that fire trail looks,
36
and then gracefully peters out.
37
Beautiful camera shake too.
38
Graphics aside, the gameplay is tricky,
39
as it's quite zoomed in,
40
but super fun and easy to pick up and play.
41
Zone Alone by Catweasel1972 This intro,
42
oh man it made me laugh.
43
Look at that little guy fixing the ship.
44
Sadly, he gets left behind and now it is your job to get them safely home.
45
Without suffocating, burning up in a star or floating off into space.
46
I very much enjoyed the use of gravity mats to slingshot the player around the screen,
47
but man it's really not at all easy with all the gravity fields being so close together a lot of the time.
48
All the same, a great effort,
49
and a game to be mastered.
50
So, out of these three previous jam winners,
51
which one will we crown Returning Champion?
52
Yes, it has to be.. not a school account with their awesome game Pyro Maniac.
53
Great job, you really are a master at creating amazing game costumes.
54
Okay, but still in the arcade games,
55
our previous winners have demonstrated their skill,
56
but what about our rising challenges?
57
Anthronis by NinjaAce8371.
58
You need to kill reds while dodging them.
59
A bit of strategy is needed to play this game,
60
as the enemy AI is rather good.
61
We can move two grid squares in any direction,
62
at least in the current game mode,
63
but so can the AI,
64
and whoever lands on top of the other wins.
65
Sounds simple, but you also have to factor in the next enemy ship
66
that will come into play as soon as the previous one is defeated.
67
I really love these clever game ideas you guys come up with, so inspirational.
68
Crazy Fighters by Clumsy Hamster.
69
In this atmospheric shooter, the green slimes are out to get us.
70
Luckily we have a very large magic blast that cuts through them with ease,
71
if only it didn't take so long to recharge.
72
So we do a lot of running away.
73
I mean stealthy dodging.
74
I really enjoyed the gurgling sounds emitted by the slimes, it's so cool.
75
What I would like to see is an indicator of the magic spell recharge.
76
And maybe a gradual increase in difficulty.
77
Every move can be your last by Elvin 2015.
78
Killer bats, and what is that?
79
A giant rotating light vomiting toad?
80
But whatever it is, it spells bad news if it catches you in its gaze.
81
So we dash behind a bush to hide our bright red t-shirt.
82
Now that is cool.
83
But those pesky bats, they won't leave us alone, so we dance on.
84
I love this simple game idea,
85
well executed and tricky to master.
86
Well well, the competition is fierce.
87
I really love the toad and bats,
88
but Ninja Ace, 8371, picks up the win,
89
with Ansonis really capturing the theme.
90
Every move matters, with their turn based battle against a cleverly coded AI.
91
Now we move on to casual games.
92
Which means we can let down our guard, at least touch.
93
Again many submissions featuring some really outstanding efforts.
94
A few highlights were Violet 2's colourful cat trail effects,
95
and Tennis Pro 123's delightful functioning piano,
96
and Wes Chow Wonsum 7's polished wall jumper.
97
But now, the top 4.
98
Floppy Birdie by Dimmy Polly.
99
On easy mode, it's a flap in the park.
100
On hard, well, things start to get serious,
101
and yet it stays enjoyable without that throw your device out of the window feeling,
102
which is a nice change for a Flabby Burb clone.
103
Circumference by HGO.
104
Every move really does matter when you're trying to trace a perfect circle,
105
not the easiest with a computer mouse,
106
but I really appreciate the coding skills and math involved in detecting and drawing our circulatory efforts.
107
You can see it changing hue as you move away from the current radius, I guess.
108
And those celebratory fireworks are the icing on the cake.
109
Motion Movie by Builderbooks is a rhythm based game taking cues from Friday Night Funking.
110
It's got a nice track selection page and then you're off.
111
The graphics are simple.
112
But what matters here is the game is solid and… fun.
113
Having the incoming notes drawn as arrows really helps get players engaged quickly,
114
as we tend to already have muscle memory for where they sit under our fingers.
115
Good job and bang on theme.
116
Finally, Where is the Mummy by scratch user 133.
117
Where's the mummy?
118
Love it.
119
But how does it fit the every move matters?
120
Well, you have to watch very carefully because one of these sarcophaguses will twitch.
121
Is something inside?
122
Yes, it's your mummy.
123
Excellent idea and excellent game.
124
What a clever idea.
125
Right, time to pick a winner.
126
None of these have won a game jam before,
127
so it's all up for grabs.
128
And the winner is… HGO with Circumference.
129
Congratulations to you for great pen work and keen coding skills.
130
I love this kind of project.
131
It's the kind of thing everyone should take a stab at coding at some point in their coding journey.
132
Now, often with less coding,
133
but bursting with creativity, best animation is next.
134
Box by Handstand Ninja.
135
Why do some products take so much effort to open them?
136
Oh come on, it's time to get the big guns out.
137
Mwahahahaha.
138
Well maybe this is a little overkill?
139
I really love the sense of humour,
140
and that you put in the effort to voice act it too.
141
Great job, that really lifts the whole presentation.
142
Drap That Clock, Part 2, by Justavut Burr.
143
We continue from where we left off in the previous jam,
144
and this might not be the most detailed looking animation,
145
but hold on, do we have any chess fans here?
146
Yes, we get to watch a full game of chess unfold.
147
How cool is that?
148
And the end is really entertaining.
149
Max vs Bob by the leader of the map.
150
Well, it never rains, but it pours.
151
Another game of chess, but this time we get to see the action from different angles.
152
Wow, I love the detail.
153
Each piece is placed perfectly from the top,
154
and from the side view.
155
How clever.
156
I really appreciate that.
157
But unlike the previous game of chess,
158
this one is over in no time at all.
159
Wow, is this the fastest checkmate in history?
160
The Forgotten Scientist by Balik Vassanet.
161
This project puts our awesome text dialogue box tutorial to excellent use,
162
to tell a long and twisted detective story.
163
I was impressed with the writing,
164
and how the tale unfolded.
165
Witty and surprisingly long.
166
I had my suspicion who was the culprit,
167
but it kept me guessing right till the end.
168
And finally, Unbeatable Every Move Matters,
169
Episode 4 by Binky Beaver.
170
Now this guy, he's topped the animation category for the last three jams,
171
and with good reason, the animations are top notch.
172
This unbeatable beatroot has only gotten stronger after their encounter with the microwave,
173
and now every move matters as our protagonist tries to make their escape.
174
I really love how Binky Beaver likes to experiment with the different camera angles, so cool.
175
Yes 5 fabulous animations, all of them worth watching if you have a moment to spare,
176
but now we need to pick the winners.
177
Yes we're going to have 2,
178
we have a returning champion and that has to go to… yes Binky Beaver,
179
it seems this man is simply unbeatable,
180
sorry about that, but we also can award a rising challenger and that is…
181
The leader of the map with Max vs Bob.
182
I was super impressed with their eye for detail with the multi-angled chess game board in particular.
183
OK, time for something completely different.
184
Best platformer.
185
ArcPo Hard Mode by GabTheGamer 2024.
186
They really embraced the theme.
187
Every move matters, right from the off.
188
This game is packed with really difficult moves,
189
hence the name I guess.
190
So if you fancy a challenge,
191
then here it is guys,
192
at least for the first 4 scenes.
193
After that it's a bit of a walk in the park.
194
Echoes of You Final by TechTornado9.
195
This is a very enjoyable blend of graphical styles,
196
and great use of this scrolling Mario tutorial.
197
But you didn't stop there,
198
you added some excellent concepts of your very own.
199
The clever rewind action is magic,
200
and we need to use it to complete each level,
201
so we can literally be in two places at once.
202
An excellent mechanic, and I was left wishing we could see more of that throughout the game.
203
Supernatural Events by Winter Melon Boss.
204
We've seen this game many times,
205
in many jams, and it continues to boast an amazing arsenal of wonderful element bending graphical effects.
206
But oh my gosh, can they even get me through scene 2?
207
I seriously tried everything I could think of,
208
and I got close, but I can't take it anymore!
209
Rage quit!
210
I'm sure it was just me.
211
I need simple instructions to guide me through.
212
Cave Dive by Hyperherobrine This was the most awesome game menu,
213
an arcade machine in which we play our game.
214
It's so cool!
215
Now we collect coins, and travel from left to right, screen to screen.
216
Also, if you remember to read the instructions,
217
we can use the space key to dash, smash through blocks.
218
That really does help getting us from one side of the screen to the other.
219
I really do love those particle effects and the retro sounds.
220
Now, how do I pronounce this?
221
Zinnik the Alien?
222
By one bazillion and one.
223
It begins with an exciting story about how you're an alien whose ship crash landed on Earth,
224
and you must escape the humans,
225
and then transitions into this excellent strategic scrolling platformer.
226
We have limited bombs, and must use them wisely to blow up sections of the wall.
227
If we choose poorly then we'll be softlocked and have to restart the level.
228
This was surprisingly fun, especially as we begin advancing through the levels,
229
with new bomb and wall types being introduced.
230
So ok, ok, we have our finalists,
231
5 platformers to choose from,
232
but who is today's winner?
233
This was a close call,
234
but after much deliberation, it is… 1 bazillion and 1 with their game Xenic.
235
The game really smashed the theme, every move matters.
236
Every bomb placement having consequences and leading to success or failure.
237
Excellent work and congratulations to you.
238
Which brings us to the last game genre of the jam,
239
the final tussle for best puzzle game.
240
And the competition has been fierce.
241
I'd like to call out a special mention to Emmet MMS for taking on a challenging project,
242
seeking help in the academy and sticking with it,
243
and Luminara with her delightful hand-drawn backgrounds.
244
Wow.
245
But now let's see the shortlist projects starting with our rising challenges.
246
Chess by MikeyJ1012 Of the many chess games submitted for this jam,
247
this one was one of the best.
248
With its clean board and pieces,
249
this project goes on to begin to validate the correct moves each piece can make.
250
That's so clever.
251
What happens next is a little unconventional,
252
but I think this is perhaps a work in progress,
253
and I hope to see more soon.
254
The Noble Path by CoolGuy1086 Beginning with an engaging story,
255
you are then plunged into a puzzle of single use platforms,
256
lasers and triggering doorways.
257
You just need to find the correct path.
258
It's very engaging and well worth a play.
259
The last level has a clone of yourself to move as well,
260
and that was especially fun to figure out.
261
Cats vs Dogs by Trollmaster123 You play as the cat,
262
so be careful of the dog.
263
It's a chase around the tiled grid to find your way home.
264
Only your home is randomly zipping around the board too,
265
which makes it very tough.
266
Did I mention the board is randomly changing too?
267
And then you'll find things get complicated,
268
with all sorts of strange tiles that affect your movement and the flow of the game.
269
It's wild!
270
So, some awesome ideas and a showcase of great coding,
271
but who will be our new rising challenger today?
272
The award goes to CoolGuy186 with The Noble Path,
273
for a well designed puzzle game that was simple and fun to pick up,
274
had nice clear levels, a well defined goal, and good level progression.
275
Congratulations!
276
But that is not the end of it,
277
no, we still have our puzzle offerings from the previous winnings,
278
vying for returning champions.
279
Let's see them now.
280
Mimic Neon by Benrex13.
281
This is one of those Simon Says type games,
282
but instead of colours we must memorise the order of the directional chevrons,
283
emitting from the central cube.
284
I really appreciate the layout as it maps directly onto the arrow keys used to control the game,
285
and again that helps with our muscle memory.
286
The visuals are fun, and I like the shimmering star backgrounds and smooth animations.
287
A little more audible feedback might be a nice touch,
288
otherwise an excellent game to stretch your brain.
289
Cereal Shuffle, the MM demo by GamerWolf Studios.
290
Wowzers, how do you do it?
291
have such a flair for creating addicting polished games.
292
Once you get over the awesome interface and into the game,
293
it's a simple matching game.
294
Swap tiles to try to make runs of 3 or more of the same type.
295
The more you can clear at once, the bigger the bonus.
296
I love the thought you put into the user interface.
297
The integrated help walks you through the game without interfering,
298
and there's even a savecode that pops up when you stop the game.
299
Amazing.
300
That leaves us with… War Tactics by Wurta4.
301
And this one has got me beat.
302
It's not your normal game of tic-tac-toe.
303
Wurta has reimagined the game over a 9x9 board,
304
with some really devious rules that require some real tactical thought,
305
and I today, at least, appear to be lacking.
306
Because the exceptional AI in this game was able to outplay me on every match,
307
and I played quite a few,
308
and no, this was not even on hard mode.
309
Visually, the game is good,
310
with clever fog of war around the game areas that you have not yet got access to.
311
And you really have to plan ahead,
312
and watch out for what the AI is doing too,
313
as otherwise your game will end very quickly,
314
and not in your favour.
315
Wow, I simply cannot say enough about the quality of these puzzles.
316
You just have to play them, really you should.
317
But I have to pick a winner,
318
and it's very tough, But the theme is every move matters,
319
and that sways it for me,
320
the winner has to be...
321
Weta4 with War Tactics.
322
It may not have the same crazy exceptional polish shown by Game Wolf Studios,
323
but it's a close second there,
324
and it has such strong AI coding that it is a match for any level.
325
I'd love to spend more time learning the tactics of this game.
326
So congratulations to you.
327
And a huge thank you to everyone who took part,
328
returning champions, rising challengers, and anyone jumping into the game jam for the very first time.
329
These jams are such a great way to put into practice what we've learned in the Griffpatch Academy,
330
and push ourselves to become better coders and game creators.
331
Indeed, if you love building games like these and want to take your skills even further,
332
you can join me inside the Griffpatch Academy,
333
my online learning community where I teach you step by step how to make full games,
334
level up your scratch skills,
335
and learn alongside hundreds of other young creators just like yourselves.
336
There's a link below if you want to find out more.
337
And together we can learn to build your favourite games.
338
Have you heard of the game Hollow Knight?
339
This summer we are starting work on a metrovania scroller.
340
So excited about that.
341
So this is the perfect time to jump on board.
342
But that is it for me today,
343
so until next time, Have a great week ahead and Scratch on guys!
