Business English for the workplace.
3
Hi, Tim here with another 9to5English lesson.
4
In today's lesson, we're going to learn how to express support for an idea in English.
5
In business, it's very important to be able to express your ideas confidently.
6
That doesn't just mean coming up with new ideas.
7
It can also mean expressing what you think about other people's ideas.
8
In our last lesson, we learned how to express doubt doubt.
9
Today, we're going to look at the other side and talk about how to express support for an idea.
10
Now, sometimes you want to show moderate support or just a bit of support.
11
In this situation, you can use expressions like I guess or I suppose before stating your support.
12
And when you state your support,
13
you might use expressions like I can see your point or that's a good way to look at it.
14
Let's try a bit of practice with these ways of expressing moderate support for an idea.
15
Listen to each example, then repeat it yourself.
16
Ready?
17
Let's get started I could go along with that yeah I guess I can see your point
18
that's worth considering I suppose that's a good way to look at it.
19
Did you hear that expression,
20
I could go along with that?
21
If you go along with something,
22
you agree or support a plan or way of doing something.
23
And notice that saying, I can or I could are mild expressions.
24
It's very different from saying,
25
I will go along with that.
26
Sometimes, however, you don't want to show moderate support.
27
Instead, you want to show strong support.
28
well you might add definitely after I can or I could to turn
29
that expression into one showing strong support you might also use words
30
or phrases to emphasize like I'm behind you 100% in
31
that case behind you means I support you
32
or you might say that's a really great idea you can see how different
33
that sounds then I guess that's a good idea
34
which doesn't sound strong at all let's try some examples of
35
showing strong support remember to repeat the examples after you hear them I'm behind you 100%
36
I can definitely back you up on that I must say that's a really great idea
37
no doubt about it
38
so in our last lesson we looked at expressing doubt but
39
if you say no doubt about it you're actually saying you
40
strongly support something one other expression you heard for emphasis is I must say you can introduce any opinion with
41
that expression just to emphasize how strongly you feel all right we've practiced different ways of expressing support
42
but how does this sound in a conversation let's listen to a short dialogue between Jillian
43
and Dave Jillian is expressing her opinion about who should join a work team Dave is expressing support for her ideas
44
I think we should bring Jane on to the team I could go along with
45
that and maybe Gregory too he's really smart no doubt about it
46
now it's your turn to practice we'll repeat the dialogue
47
but this time we're going to beep out the second speakers
48
words you will have to say those parts yourself remember to start by saying you could go along with
49
that then show strong support for the next idea by saying no doubt about it
50
I think we should bring Jane on to the team and maybe Gregory too he's really smart
51
okay that's all for this lesson we've learned how to express mild
52
or moderate support for an idea
53
and how to say you strongly support something we'll be back
54
soon with some more 9 to 5 English lessons this time
55
with a focus on phrasal verbs phrasal verbs can be tricky especially
56
if you're just beginning to learn English
57
but we'll have you speaking like a pro in no time until then so long and happy learning

このレッスンについて

今回のレッスンでは、英語でアイデアを支持する方法を学びます。ビジネスの場面では、自分の意見を自信を持って表現することが非常に重要です。新しいアイデアを提案するだけでなく、他の人のアイデアについて自分の考えを伝えることも含まれます。前回のレッスンでは疑念を表現する方法を学びましたが、今回は支持を表現する側面に焦点を当てます。

重要な語彙とフレーズ

  • I guess(まあ、そう思う)
  • I suppose(たぶん)
  • I can see your point(あなたの言いたいことはわかる)
  • That's worth considering(考慮する価値がある)
  • I'm behind you 100%(完全に支持します)
  • No doubt about it(間違いありません)
  • I must say(率直に言わせてもらえば)
  • I could go along with that(それには賛成します)
