The End Phew little kitty,
2
El Nino seems to be going to extremes these days.
3
Extreme?
4
More like Super Saiyan mode!
5
That's actually a pretty good description.
6
So, let's take this opportunity to find out how El Nino goes Super Scion Mode.
7
Zoom in!
8
To understand El Nino, we first need to understand the Pacific Ocean, a key part of Earth's climate system.
9
Under normal conditions, trade winds blow steadily from east to west along the equator.
10
These winds push warm surface water from the eastern Pacific near South America toward the western Pacific near Indonesia and Australia.
11
As warm water piles up in the west, the ocean near Indonesia and Australia becomes warmer and wetter.
12
Warm air rises from the ocean surface, forming clouds and bringing frequent rainfall.
13
Meanwhile, along the coast of South America, cooler water rises from deeper parts of the ocean.
14
This keeps the eastern Pacific relatively cool and dry.
15
This balance between the ocean and atmosphere is the Pacific's normal state.
16
Sometimes, however, the trade winds become stronger than usual and push even more warm water toward the western Pacific.
17
This phase is called La Nina.
18
As a result, Indonesia and Australia often experience above average rainfall, while the eastern Pacific becomes cooler than normal.
19
In many ways, La Nina is an intensified version of the Pacific's normal state.
20
But the Pacific does not always stay in this pattern.
21
Every few years, the trade winds weaken.
22
When this happens, they can no longer hold as much warm water in the western Pacific.
23
The warm water begins spreading back toward the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
24
This phase is known as El Niño.
25
As the eastern Pacific becomes warmer, weather patterns begin to shift.
26
Areas that are normally wet, such as Indonesia and parts of Australia, may become drier.
27
While areas that are normally drier, such as parts of Peru and Ecuador, may experience unusually heavy rainfall.
28
A typical El Nino can already have significant impacts around the world.
29
However, some El Nino events become much stronger than others.
30
Scientists have discovered that the ocean and atmosphere can sometimes reinforce each other through a powerful feedback process.
31
As warmer water spreads eastward, it further weakens the trade winds.
32
Weaker trade winds allow additional warm water to move eastward.
33
This leads to further warming, which weakens the winds again.
34
The cycle continues, causing the event to grow stronger and stronger.
35
At the same time,
36
large amounts of heat stored beneath the Pacific Ocean can move eastward through underwater waves known as Kelvin waves.
37
These waves carry heat across the Pacific and help warm the ocean's surface even further.
38
When these processes become especially intense, a regular El Nino can develop into an extreme El Nino,
39
often nicknamed a Super El Nino.
40
Super El Nino events can dramatically alter weather patterns across the globe.
41
They may bring severe flooding to parts of South America, ...increased drought and wildfire risks in Australia and Indonesia,
42
...damaged coral reefs through unusually warm ocean temperatures, and contribute to record-breaking global temperatures.
43
Although scientists can monitor the Pacific using satellites, weather stations and ocean buoys,
44
predicting exactly when a Super El Nino will develop remains challenging.
45
Nevertheless, understanding how the Pacific Ocean works helps us better prepare for one of the most powerful climate patterns on Earth.
46
Trivia time!
47
Did you know El Nino is Spanish for the boy?
48
Yes, and La Nina means the girl in Spanish.
49
It's sketching time!
50
Today's sketch of the day goes to...
51
Gretchen Lane!
52
Hope you learned something trending today.
53
Until next time, it's me Dr. Binocs, Zooming out!
54
So Kitty, that's how a regular El Nino can evolve into a Super El Nino.
55
Or in your words, a Super Scion El Nino!
56
Let's just hope it doesn't transform into Ultra Instinct, Doninho.
57
We better prepare now.
58
Mind it.
