1
Thank you, thank you.
2
So my father used to always tell me something which I want to share with you.
3
That why do you want to fit inside a glass slipper?
4
You know like we were told,
5
like Cinderella did, why do you want to fit inside a glass slipper when you can shatter the glass ceiling?
6
I want to tell you a little secret.
7
I'm not very fond of this phrase, breaking the glass ceiling.
8
Why does it annoy me?
9
Because it takes the context of everything that I have done,
10
all my achievements, all my hard work and puts it into a box.
11
As if my ambition was,
12
I want to find a glass ceiling and break it.
13
Not at all.
14
To be really honest, I was never in a mission to break, to shatter anything.
15
All I wanted was to chase my dreams, my ambitions.
16
I wanted to evolve.
17
I wanted to become the best version of me that I could be.
18
And of course, in Priyanka Chopra style,
19
along the way, I wanted to smash and break every obstacle that came my way,
20
which I did.
21
But that does not mean that the glass ceiling doesn't exist.
22
Of course it exists.
23
And countless of women and men,
24
mostly women, run into it in their professional and personal lives.
25
And I'm sure a lot of you can vouch for that right now.
26
The Oxford Dictionary definition of the glass ceiling is an unacknowledged barrier to advancement in a profession,
27
especially affecting women and members of minorities from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy.
28
And this metaphor was first coined by feminists in reference to barriers and careers of high achieving women.
29
So why did I choose it as my topic for today if I hated it so much?
30
Because I hope through my experiences I can present to you the tools to live your dream
31
and to not make that glass ceiling that is defined by society largely patriarchal as your goal.
32
I want you to aim higher because you know you can.
33
And it's honestly all I did.
34
Every step of the way,
35
all I did was set a higher standard.
36
How did I get here?
37
By being fierce.
38
By being fearless.
39
And by being flawed.
40
Completely and utterly flawed.
41
I'm not perfect.
42
Like none of us are.
43
So tonight I'm going to try and break it down for you a little bit in a slightly different way.
44
I present the 12 show-shot,
45
show-fire ways of becoming Priyanka Chopra.
46
Would you like that?
47
Sorry, I was just kidding because us millennials,
48
we don't like to be told what to do.
49
So this is a gentle nudge in the right direction,
50
presenting PC's 12 rules of becoming the best version of yourself.
51
So here are a few of my favorites from my list.
52
There's only one you, okay?
53
Because there's no one like you.
54
And I don't mean the superfluous, superficial parts.
55
I'm talking about the core of you,
56
who you are inside, your values, your beliefs, your flaws.
57
And once you understand who really that person is,
58
you would have taken the first step in finding your unique self.
59
And that is the best version of you.
60
Who am I really?
61
Most often we don't allow ourselves the ability to dream beyond our imagination.
62
We don't allow ourselves to think about the future because we are afraid of change.
63
We are afraid to move away from what is familiar.
64
Either that or sometimes, you know,
65
we are too rigid to let our dreams evolve.
66
Loosen up, you know, shake it off a little bit.
67
Change is the only constant thing in life
68
and you are never too old or never too experienced to learn something new something new.
69
Believe that you have everything already as your brahmastra in your will to be able to be and achieve your dreams.
70
Be fearless.
71
I know I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer.
72
What am I today?
73
I'm an actor, I'm a singer,
74
I'm an author, I'm a producer, I'm an artist.
75
How did I go from becoming an engineer to all of these things?
76
I made choices the choices that I wanted for myself So that is my rule number two
77
Let your dreams fly Give them wings Be who you want to be just by being fearless
78
Now opportunities that's another important part of being fearless.
79
They're a very funny thing aren't these opportunities? they don't come very often.
80
They come far and few in between.
81
But when they do, do we recognize them?
82
Our job is to recognize them and make the most of them.
83
I look back on all the things that I've done and I marvel at the opportunities that came my way.
84
Miss India, Miss World, when I was in Bareilly in army school,
85
my first film offer, my first music single,
86
the first film I actually produced.
87
There was never a plan, ever.
88
More like the universe sort of guiding me towards these opportunities.
89
All I had to do was recognize them and make sure I worked
90
so hard that I squeezed every drop out of these opportunities.
91
This, ladies and gentlemen, is called drive.
92
It's called ambition.
93
So no matter where you are in life rule number three
94
is you have never arrived enough to explore new opportunities and there's nothing wrong with being ambitious ladies listen to me
95
now for all of you guys who like everything in life
96
I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to have the whole cake and eat it too nothing wrong I want everything.
97
I need everything.
98
And there is nothing wrong with that.
99
As long as you're not harming someone or doing something wrong,
100
don't be scared to want more for yourself than you ever thought you could.
101
I'll give you a small example.
102
A few years ago, I was shooting a film called Dawn 2.
103
You've heard of that, right?
104
So it was chosen to be shown at the Berlin Film Festival, Berlinale.
105
And my entire team was flying for the premiere.
106
and it was very exciting time
107
but at the same time I was invited for the first time to attend the Grammy Awards in LA
108
so now
109
and I was doing music it was this big choice both
110
the events were literally taking place one day apart in completely different time zones Berlin
111
and LA my team
112
and everyone around me told me no it can never happen you have to choose what is your priority
113
and you You know what I did?
114
I made some insane connections.
115
Mumbai to London, London to Berlin,
116
Berlin to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to LA,
117
LA to Mumbai in three days.
118
And I made it happen.
119
I went to both events and I looked great at both events.
120
Even though I hadn't slept,
121
it took a little bit of extra makeup.
122
But I was fine.
123
And that's not the only time I've done it.
124
I've done it so many times over and over again.
125
Why?
126
Because I don't want anyone to tell me I can't have everything.
127
I want to dream of everything and I'll have everything.
128
So rule number four, be greedy.
129
Be greedy for your ambitions.
130
Be hungry for it.
131
Don't live on someone else's benchmarks.
132
We are told so many times in our life, your responsibility is this.
133
This is who you should be.
134
who can tell you who you should be?
135
Don't let anyone or any situation dictate to you who you are and who you can be.
136
I know it's very much easier said than done.
137
I know that because I've done it.
138
But fight for your dreams.
139
Because no one else is going to fight for your dreams except you.
140
I've turned down so many roles,
141
opportunities because they did not fit into what I thought at that time was the right thing for me.
142
So today, my path is just my own.
143
It belongs to no one.
144
My failures, my successes, all of it,
145
mine, my journey, all of it is mine.
146
So rule number five, do not compromise.
147
Do not settle on your dreams.
148
Now who likes to fail?
149
What?
150
What?
151
At least 15 people have taken their hands.
152
I am really confused with audience right now.
153
Would you like to fail?
154
Well, I'm not talking to you guys then.
155
I'm talking to those guys who hate to fail.
156
Because I hate to fail.
157
It's really as simple as that.
158
It takes tubs and tubs of ice cream,
159
lots of tissues, lots of tears,
160
lots of drama baazi, my mother,
161
my best friends, my family,
162
everybody making me feel better about it about it,
163
but the one thing that is as certain as night and day,
164
ladies and gentlemen, is that you will fail.
165
It's just how it is.
166
And there is nothing that you can do to stop that.
167
It's what you do after that will define where you go.
168
When something I've invested...
169
Thank Thank you.
170
Thank you.
171
When something I've invested in my heart and my soul,
172
which I do with everything that I actually put my mind to,
173
if that fails, I don't just wallow in self-pity.
174
I roll myself in it.
175
I roll around in it.
176
I wrap myself in it,
177
head to toes, self-pity, self-pity, self-pity.
178
It's not a pretty sight.
179
I can tell you that who's sitting right here has witnessed it many times
180
but then I get up cry a little dust myself off
181
and dive straight back into life
182
because the only way to push failure aside is to move ahead not ignore it analyze it
183
and learn from it always remember you will never truly enjoy success until you have tasted failure
184
and trust me when I tell you it tastes like shit.
185
It really does.
186
So rule number six, fail,
187
fail, fail again and then rise like a phoenix.
188
Now what is life without a little bit of a risk, right?
189
I'm not an adrenaline junkie.
190
I'm not telling you to go off roller coasters or anything.
191
I've always believed that you have to take risks,
192
calculated, educated risks to evolve.
193
Because if you've not truly explored the full extent of your possibilities,
194
you'll always remain stagnant.
195
People have written me off several times in my career.
196
Sometimes they didn't agree with my choices.
197
When I played a negative character in my film Aitras,
198
very early in my career,
199
I was told I'll be a vamp and no one will cast me as a heroine.
200
When I took on a female-centric film called Fashion,
201
again, very early on in my career,
202
I was told that was not norm.
203
When I signed a US TV show at the height of my film career in India,
204
each time the risks were huge,
205
the stakes were high and the repercussions could have been,
206
to say not the least, career ending.
207
Thank God they weren't and I'm still standing in front of you.
208
I really appreciate God.
209
I don't know what will happen going forward but as of now,
210
I can say that my risks and the gamble was worth it.
211
You know why?
212
Because I backed up those risks with my hundred percent.
213
So rule number seven, be bold and take these risks.
214
Now, friends, family, the people you work with,
215
the people around us are our greatest influencers in your journey to success.
216
So you have to choose very wisely.
217
Rule number eight, surround yourself with the right people who do not stab you in the back.
218
Now who's into social media?
219
Who's on social media?
220
Raise your hands.
221
Yeah, we like it.
222
I like it.
223
We can raise our hands.
224
All right, it's almost everyone.
225
Now keep your hands raised if you have ever been upset by like a bad comment
226
that you may have read on a photograph or like on Facebook
227
or when you've posted something and sometimes you know it's like why do people have to be mean?
228
Yeah, so there's a lot of you right?
229
Guys, please let me just tell you this,
230
no matter what you do,
231
someone will always be unhappy.
232
Always.
233
Especially in this age of social media,
234
it's so easy for us to be confused between the voices
235
that actually matter and the opinions of faceless people writing behind the anonymity of what the web offers.
236
They don't matter.
237
So rule number nine, you can never please everyone all the time.
238
And the biggest favor that you will all do to yourselves will be to laugh at yourself,
239
at situations, Find a moment to appreciate every single day this funny thing called life.
240
And that's my most important rule number 10.
241
Don't take yourself too seriously.
242
We're not making rockets.
243
Alright?
244
Calm down, have fun, and just enjoy this beautiful journey that we've been put on.
245
I do that.
246
In the meanwhile, hi.
247
I'm not sure how to know.
248
Two other rules are just.
249
It's really not that hard,
250
in my experience, to be kind,
251
to be compassionate, to be human.
252
You will never know someone else's full story,
253
so don't be quick to judge.
254
My mother, who's here tonight with the rest of my family,
255
this entire front row is very Chopra and Okhwari right now.
256
She taught me when I was very,
257
very young that there is always someone who will be less fortunate than you.
258
Always.
259
So give back wherever you can.
260
There's a huge reason I started my foundation.
261
I lend my voice to UNICEF,
262
Girl Up and causes that I'm associated with.
263
Because we have one world and it's ours.
264
And we need to heal it.
265
And that starts with us.
266
So that is my rule number 11.
267
Give back.
268
And finally, the most important one.
269
Always remember where you came from.
270
It's truly what defines you.
271
So I'm a proud Indian,
272
an army ki beti, daughter of two doctors with a middle class upbringing and ginormous families who I love on both sides.
273
We've seen good times, we've seen bad times,
274
we've seen hardships, we've seen pain,
275
laughter, sadness, but that is what has made me who I am.
276
And I wear that with pride every day and everywhere that I go.
277
So last and definitely not the least,
278
rule number 12, don't ever forget your roots and where you came from.
279
I hope you take some of what I have shared with you today
280
and go into the new year with maybe a different perspective on life and start 2018 with being fierce,
281
fearless, and flawed.
282
Yeah, that's it.
283
That's it.
284
I read this somewhere and kind of stuck with me,
285
and I hope it'll stick with you.
286
life's journey is not to arrive at your graveside safely in a well-preserved body
287
but rather to skid in sideways completely worn out
288
and say holy shit that was a ride
289
that is how I want to go so to sum up this incredible journey
290
that I have been on I stand before you today weathered by life
291
but happy and and raring to do so much more.
292
I'll see you on the other side.
293
Namaste.
