1
For those people that are on a tight budget but still want to see a doctor,
2
how can they find one that bulk bills?
3
So there's a couple of websites.
4
So one of them is Clean Bill and they'll actually say this is the doctors that bulk bill locally.
5
In certain areas, there just are no local bulk billing doctors.
6
Most just actually can't afford to at all.
7
Is there a perception that a bulk billing doctor isn't as good as a privately billing doctor?
8
I don't think there's that perception,
9
but I think the perception is often around how long they'll spend with their patients.
10
Because if you choose to bulk bill,
11
your timing and the costs often then mean that you've got less time to spend with that patient.
12
For patients who aren't eligible for concessions and maybe,
13
like you said, they're 10Ks away from a GP that does bulk bill,
14
what can they do to make visiting the GP a little more affordable?
15
Yeah, good question.
16
So what I'd suggest is actually save up all of your questions for the one visit.
17
So you need to go to your GP to get your pap smear done.
18
Also get your blood pressure checked,
19
get your regular routine heart check done,
20
get your skin check done,
21
get everything that you need to get done for that next 12 months in that visit.
22
And if you don't know what those things are,
23
your GP can tell you.
24
So most of the time I encourage my patients,
25
when they can, to only see me once a year
26
because I want to see them and get all of that preventative health stuff done on that visit.
27
And I don't want to see them for another 12 months.
28
I noticed some stats from the Bureau of Statistics late last year
29
that saw an increasing number of people delaying accessing health services.
30
The one service that they are delaying the most is dental.
31
What's the dangers of this?
32
And are there any ways they can reduce their costs in accessing services like dental?
33
Yeah, that's really scary because when people come to you and say,
34
I need to decide between going to the dentist or paying for petrol.
35
It's a really, really worrying time.
36
Things we worry about with dentition isn't just cosmetics.
37
It's not just how beautiful your smile is,
38
but your dental health is really important because buildup of bacteria and gum disease can lead to lots of different problems,
39
not just with your oral health,
40
but with your heart health as well.
41
And your teeth last your lifetime.
42
So you need good dentition when you're a female in pregnancy,
43
when you're young, so that you don't have problems when you're older.
44
What you can do to make it cheaper,
45
it's tricky because there's not a lot of funding for dental care.
46
In lots of places in Sydney,
47
there is some federally funded programs,
48
but they've got really long wait lists.
49
So Sutherland Hospital has one,
50
there's one just outside of Central train station,
51
but there is quite a long wait list for them.
52
Telehealth.
53
Absolutely.
54
Access to calling your doctor or a video call with the doctor.
55
Run us through the costs involved with that.
56
Is it cheaper?
57
Is it more expensive than seeing your doctor?
58
And when is it a good thing to do and when is it not?
59
How wonderful is it that we were given this option during COVID and people could continue to see their GP,
60
someone they already know, someone they already trust.
61
The cost, out-of-pocket costs, are probably about the same.
62
So out-of-pocket, you will often be paying the same as if you did go in to see your GP.
63
But what's different is your time because you can do it on your lunch break.
64
You can do it before work.
65
You can do it just after you've dropped the kids to school.
66
You don't necessarily have to take time off work to go in for that doctor's visit.
67
So that's where the real cost saving is.
68
But as you say, it's not always appropriate.
69
If you want me to look in your child's ear,
70
I can't do it over telehealth.
71
I probably can't assess your skin lesion over telehealth.
72
I definitely can't listen to your lungs over telehealth.
73
I can talk to you about mental health.
74
I can talk to you about your pregnancy.
75
I can talk to you about doing an STD check.
76
There are so many things we can do with telehealth,
77
but it's not appropriate for everything.
78
And speaking of health, one other big cost when you're accessing services is private health insurance, right?
79
At what point does someone really need to start thinking about,
80
hey, A, do I need it?
81
B, do I need to increase my cover?
82
C, is it worth it?
83
Yeah, great question.
84
So often for females, that conversation happens when you're starting to think about babies.
85
So as soon as you're starting to think about pregnancy and pregnancy care,
86
that's a decision that you need to think about.
87
And that's because your options are going to be public or private.
88
And if you want to have a private obstetrician and have a private delivery,
89
then you're going to need to have private health insurance or have very large costs.
90
So that's when females usually think about it.
91
In Australia, we're really lucky.
92
Our trauma services, our cancer services,
93
our public hospitals are fantastic.
94
So if you don't have private health insurance,
95
you will still have excellent medical care in the public system.
96
If you have private health insurance, your options are increased.
97
So it means you can see a private specialist without the additional fees or with a portion of those additional fees covered.
98
So the decision of when to think about private health insurance is entirely based on your finances
99
and when you can afford it.
100
There are some tax benefits of having it.
101
And so when you've met those tax thresholds,
102
it's worth thinking about having it because it reduces your taxable income.
103
And then what your Medicare needs are,
104
what your medical needs are for the next 12 months,
105
five years, 10 years ongoing.
106
Thank you.
