1
What elevates a memorable film into an unforgettable film?
2
It's not necessarily something you can write.
3
You may not even be able to predict it.
4
And while you're watching a movie, it might not even be something you're consciously aware of.
5
But guaranteed, you can feel it.
6
This mysterious, unpredictable, magical substance is called chemistry.
7
that I really like to keep an eye on when I'm watching movies is chemistry.
8
Chemistry Well, the scientific breakdown of it.
9
We could even start there.
10
Chemistry is the study of matter.
11
But I prefer to see it as the study of change.
12
I think the same thing goes along with the chemistry that we feel between people.
13
What creates humans and our personalities and character and then the study of our relationships with each other.
14
How we impact each other, how we interact with each other and how we change each other.
15
This is what makes watching films and the development of stories so interesting.
16
It's really hard to just manufacture chemistry.
17
This I think is something of interest.
18
We all are fascinated by it and we all can tell when there's great chemistry in a film, especially when it comes to romantic chemistry.
19
But there's different forms of chemistry.
20
There's not just romantic chemistry, there's also sexual chemistry.
21
There's chemistry between families, between friends, and even between enemies.
22
attention when they hate each other.
23
And then they love each other!
24
There's something so delicious about that and it's really hard to predict who's gonna have it.
25
This is why when you do auditions, you will have oftentimes chemistry reads.
26
This is why sometimes when you listen to a podcast, especially in my case, chemistry is so key.
27
How do they bounce off of each other?
28
Is there a natural rapport?
29
Sometimes it's not a natural rapport.
30
Sometimes the interesting thing is the way they're so awkward together and constantly bouncing off of each other.
31
What is it that makes them so chemistry with each other.
32
Some people have better chemistry, some people have terrible chemistry.
33
It does come down to your way of interacting with the world and the people around you.
34
But when it comes to Films, you're creating a whole world,
35
backstory, relationships within the span of, let's say, approximately an hour and a half.
36
And chemistry is built typically over time and through various experiences.
37
It's the way you look at each other.
38
It's the way you read what the other person is doing and choosing to react to it.
39
It's the way of maybe knowing them
40
so well you can guess what's going to happen
41
and it just falls together so easily all depends on what's the nature of your relationship.
42
Some actors have great chemistry with each other.
43
Some actors have terrible chemistry with each other.
44
- You've gone a long time.
45
- Sometimes chemistry can be created because there's something happening off set and off camera, and then that leaks into the on -camera relationship,
46
and we're so fascinated with those kinds of stories.
47
Let me give you a great example.
48
Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.
49
One of the most attractive on -screen old Hollywood couples of all time, today people talk about it.
50
Individually they have their own allure and magnetism.
51
Yet when they met together on set to have and have not, there was some kind of chemistry that exploded and off -screen as well.
52
So they have this just beautiful tension that existed and we could feel that as audience.
53
Another famous example, perhaps a little bit more modern,
54
Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Angelina Jolie and Brad sizzling, crackling, unforgettable.
55
You're magnetized.
56
Why is chemistry so important though?
57
Because a movie is about...
58
following the story of a person or persons and seeing what's happening to them.
59
If there is no chemistry, you are not invested.
60
I don't care because you make me feel nothing.
61
You can look at actors doing chemistry reads.
62
I think you must have had a love affair with her.
63
No. Just with her hands.
64
- - Hmm.
65
I think you must have had a love affair with her.
66
No, no, no, no, no. Just with her hands.
67
She was a one -legged prostitute.
68
Thank you.
69
See?
70
Ow!
71
Even look at auditions that exist out there online.
72
You can see how one actor portrays a certain character in the way that they connect versus another.
73
I'm a sales rep, which means that my job is to speak to clients.
74
um, on the phone.
75
if we can supply it to them and if they can, purchased it and I'm boring myself just talking about it. So...
76
My job is to speak to clients on the phone about quantities and type of "Copier,
77
paper." Some of them have it, and some of them don't.
78
It doesn't mean they're a bad actor, it doesn't mean it's a bad script, but you know, We as actors come in with our personalities
79
and our natural characters and the way our body moves as well and the way we interact with people.
80
That's why some duos are just I don't know, they just fit well together.
81
If you're watching a lot of romantic films, you'll feel it after a while.
82
You can tell, like, this person has great chemistry and this one doesn't.
83
Perfect example of a slow but undeniable built of chemistry: When Harry Met Sally.
84
This is the ultimate rom -com and it's not because it's contrived circumstances, it's not because it's so hilarious,
85
it's not just because of incredible screenwriting and direction, from let's say other rom -coms of a similar era,
86
is the chemistry between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
87
Just, ooh, undeniable, lovely, warm.
88
And chemistry comes in different forms.
89
I think this is why it's so fascinating to observe.
90
Sometimes it's just comfortable knowledge.
91
Like, yeah, I could see them holding hands quietly for the rest of their lives.
92
Sometimes it's sparkling and tense and unbelievable, lightning in a bottle.
93
Here are some characters that I believe "The Addams Family." If you're looking at the '90s films,
94
Morticia and Gomez, Oh, the chemistry!
95
It's just, it's so, so good.
96
It's really hard to make it happen again, as we've attempted with the Wednesday Netflix series.
97
That chemistry is just not there.
98
You guys are making me nauseous.
99
Who knows what it could be attributed to, but I do think it's primarily those actors and just the way that they fit together.
100
Unforgettable.
101
Another great example, Lord of the Rings.
102
Arwen and Aragorn.
103
Slow.
104
You can imagine.
105
thousands of years waiting for each other and seeing that love just remain unchanging while the world shifts around them.
106
Look at that chemistry.
107
Quiet, subtle, understated, and deeply romantic.
108
You really believe that they have loved each other for hundreds of years.
109
One that was a little bit disappointing in Harry Potter.
110
Harry Potter and Ginny.
111
Guys, this was one of the most disappointing examples of chemistry that I have ever experienced on film as myself, who loves the Harry Potter series.
112
Oh man, when they kissed, it was just like no chemistry whatsoever.
113
Fred and Angelina had more chemistry than that.
114
Yeah.
115
In a case like this, you have these two actors that this huge franchise and studio spent so much money searching out for.
116
They have this great script, they have this wonderful director's music by these incredible composers.
117
All the pieces put together to have the perfect "wow" moment and it just felt totally flat.
118
seeking in our own lives.
119
Think about your favorite duos, the ones who have the best chemistry you've ever seen on film.

122
And I will see you in the next video.

  • 化学についての研究: "Chemistry is the study of matter." という表現は、抽象的な概念を具体的に説明する際に使われます。このような表現を通じて、学びを深められます。
  • 人々の関係の重要性: "It’s really hard to just manufacture chemistry." ここでの文は、感情や人間関係の複雑さを表現する際に役立ちます。
  • 相互作用の様子: "Sometimes it’s not a natural rapport."
