What is shadowing?

What is shadowing?
3
Why do I keep repeating myself?
4
Why do I keep repeating myself?
5
Let's take a closer look.
6
Hey guys this is Jeff with Fluent American again talking about shadowing.
7
Now if you've been following my channel for a while
8
or just even just looking at some of our most recent videos you see lots of videos that are dedicated to shadowing.
9
Now you may or may not be familiar with the technique so I want to just highlight how does it work?
10
How can you make it work more effectively for you?
11
And also what are some strategies that you want to consider when you're doing shadowing?
12
So first let's just kind of talk about techniques for shadowing.
13
Now there are a couple different ways you can do it.
14
Shadowing is basically just imitation of what you hear.
15
So for instance a native speaker says something and then you just try to say exactly what they said.
16
Don't forget subscribe to the channel.
17
Now more advanced forms of shadowing will try to not only just repeat the words
18
but also try to capture the same pronunciation, the same intonation, the same stress.
19
So for instance if someone says right then you want to make sure you're saying
20
that same intonation right right you don't want to pronounce it as for instance right
21
that would be wrong it's right
22
so you want to make sure you're copying the same intonation
23
patterns you also want to make sure you're copying the same stress patterns.
24
So for instance if someone says a big red car, a big red car, you want to make sure that you're emphasizing big and car, a big red car.
25
You don't want to say a big red car, you want to say a big red car.
26
You know so shadowing is trying to pay attention to these things.
27
It's trying to pay attention to again the pronunciation of individual words.
28
It's trying to pay attention to the stress that's used.
29
So again stressing big and car in the art example and also making sure you're copying the same intonation patterns.
30
That's a lot.
31
So one thing I suggest with shadowing
32
and also kind of just listening practice in general is to try to pick source material that's a little bit shorter.
33
I have some students for instance they come to me
34
and they say hey Jeff I'm practicing my listening I'm doing some shadowing you know I'm watching TV shows
35
or I'm watching a show on Netflix and I watch a whole episode and I just say back everything that I hear.
36
And I guess from my perspective I feel
37
that you're putting yourself in a bad position because
38
if you watch a full episode
39
or for instance a full movie just imagine all the things
40
you're missing you know a full episode for most shows nowadays
41
is at least going to be 20 to 30 minutes
42
if not longer so just think about
43
that you know that's 20 to 30 minutes or more of content
44
that you may
45
or may not have picked up everything for what I suggest is really trying to pick content that's a little bit shorter.
46
When you're listening to something, so for instance, maybe you're using the news, or maybe you're using a podcast, or maybe you're using a movie,
47
I suggest trying to focus on just like a one
48
or two minute section and trying to get as proficient as possible just with
49
that amount of content because there's so much that's just happening even in that one-minute span.
50
Think of all the words that they're saying.
51
Think of all the different intonation patterns that they're using.
52
Think of all the different stresses that are going to appear in those sentences.
53
You know, one minute of a TV show is plenty.
54
When I'm doing in-depth analysis with my students, you know, we can spend 15-20 minutes on a single paragraph,
55
a single maybe three or four sentences depending on how much analysis we're doing.
56
So just try to pick a shorter segment of something.
57
Now if you're still skeptical about shadowing, you feel like you're not really improving, you're not sure it works, here's some of the things that the research suggests.
58
Research suggests that one, it helps students feel more comfortable in the language.
59
You know you're actually able to get some speaking practice in instead of just sitting down.
60
And this is actually a second advantage as well is that it requires more active listening.
61
What a lot of students do is they they want to practice listening
62
or they want to practice their English or any language and so you know they put on their headphones, they listen to music, or they watch a show, or they watch a movie,
63
and they think oh wow this is great I'm practicing my language.
64
And it's true you know you can improve that way.
65
But if you're trying to make it more effective, shadowing requires you to be much more active because not only
66
are you paying attention more attentively to what you're hearing because you need to imitate it, but you're also trying to again imitate, you're trying to speak.
67
So you're not only using a passive skill, for instance, listening, but you're adding an active component to it, which is speaking.
68
Now you're not saying novel sentences, you're not making your own words, but you're still getting a little bit of speaking practice in.
69
And this ties into the next point as well, you know students who use continuous shadowing practice as a part of their study routine say
70
that they feel more comfortable in speaking.
71
It's something that, again, you do it 5-10 minutes a day over a period of time, you do start to get a little bit more comfortable.
72
And you also know that the material you're using is correct because it's you're using a native speaker.
73
You know, when you say your own sentences you may make mistakes, but when you're using shadowing you're relying on the speech of a native speaker,
74
so you're automatically using content that you know is correct or standard.
75
By the way, if you're looking for daily pronunciation practice and feedback, you really need to be in our Telegram group.

77
So again this is just some quick highlights about shadowing.
78
Please take a look at our videos.
79
Our shadowing videos are unique in that we give you whole dialogues
80
and then we repeat them with pauses so
81
that way you don't have to always you know press start
82
and pause and start and pause you know because that gets really annoying after a while.
83
We have pauses included in our videos so that way when you're shadowing you can just repeat during the pauses.
84
I really encourage you to use our shadowing videos
85
and then record yourself as you do it
86
and also try to record my voice as well so
87
that way you can hear me and then you can also hear yourself and compare.
88
